5.0 out of 5 stars Smile Empty Satire
To everyone that has listened to this CD and reviewed it poorly...which CD are you listening to? This album is rife with delicious satire, parody and most importantly, socially-biting hooks. But it doesn't stop at the lyrics, which are masterfully done; the music is actually crafted to bring dissonance and consonance to the entire experience. Look, if you haven't...

3.0 out of 5 stars Vultures is a good album but far from their best
After 3 1/2 years of waiting for an official second release from Smile Empty Soul, Vultures hit shelves yesterday and I ran out as soon as I could and got my copy. It is easy to see early on in the record that it has a different sound to it than the previous two albums (Self-Titled/ Anxiety). There are however some stand-outs on this record such as Here's To Another, most...

Look, if you haven't figured out yet that Sean and the rest of the band are both well read and well educated, then pop on your Spinal Tap cd and deconstruct that. There is so much philosophy, so much Nietzsche, Kierkegaard, Freud and so many others sprinkled in both the lyrics and the music it makes it absurdly simplistic to say things like 'Smile let me down' or 'Smile didn't keep it real'. Go back and listen to the album, read some books, and figure out that Smile Empty Soul is one of the finest bands out there. If you want to listen to 'Bottom of a Bottle' every night and complain about progression, be my guest. But then why don't you take a cue from the hidden track and "All move to Hollywood" where everyone is fake. Smile, like they always do, sacrifices fame, money and respect for one thing: the music

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome CD, October 24, 2006
This review is from: Vultures (Dig) (Audio CD)
I actually bought this CD about a week before it came out at one of Smile Empty Souls shows. After listening to it about two times in a row, and letting it all sink in I have to say that this CD has something to offer everyone. Every song is amazing in its own way, and any Smile Empty Soul fan should have this CD by now and know what I am talking about. Almost anyone can relate to at least one song, or one set of lyrics off of this CD in their own way. Overall, Vultures is simply an amazing CD, so go out and buy it if you haven't already.

This review is from: Vultures (Dig) (Audio CD)
I had the chance to pick up the album at one of there recent shows. Vultures is one of the very few albums that I own that I can put into a CD player and never hit the skip button. Love the addtion of mike booth, it gives them a fuller sound and the lyrics are amazing. Ive been waiting for this album for a long time and i have to say it was well worth the wait, Vultures definitely doesnt disappoint!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Band Of Prey, August 26, 2009

The music business is just that...a business. Bands come and go, get dropped, lose money, sell out, and then eventually most bands just simply fade away. Smile Empty Soul wont fade away. Their follow up to their eponymous debut album, "Anxiety" never got released due to label problems, but they persist. Three years after their debut, this is "Vultures". "Vultures" is their first on Beiler Records. This album takes aim at all of the vultures from their past label throught post grunge, hard hitting songs.

1. Out To Sea (3:41) 10/10
2. The Hit (3:43) 10/10
3. Loser (4:02) 10/10
4. Jesus Is The Manager At Wal-Mart (3:08) 10/10
5. The Freaks Are Coming (4:03) 10/10
6. Morning Light (3:45) 10/10
7. Adjustments (3:00) 10/10
8. Here's To Another (3:29) 9/10
9. Disease (4:23) 10/10
10. Live Forever (3:15) 10/10
11. Better Off Alone (4:05) 10/10
12. Vultures (3:31) 10/10

Overall: 12 songs, 44:00 10/10

This album explodes with a heavy song to start things off. "Out To Sea" explores the feeling of isolation, and loneliness. Sean's wit shows up throughout the disc on songs like "The Hit", "Jesus Is The Manager..." and "The Freaks Are Coming" are classic SES and they hit hard, and are so catchy. The ballads "Morning Light" and "Vultures" are emotionally heavy and damn good.
Sean takes shots again at religion, mega corporations (sometimes both in one song) and society's views toward reality. He even points the pen at himself on songs like "Loser" and "Here's To Another." I love how Sean can sound ominous ("Live Forever"), angry, hopeless and defeated, and just damn witty. His vocals always reflect the mood of the song on this album.
Musically the album has catchy melodies, and riffs. The extended outro of "Disease" is hard hitting and awesome and the stripped acoustic chords on "Vultures" showcase the diversity of the band. Overall this is my favorite Smile Empty Soul album to date. Lyrically, their debut and sophomore releases contain a bit more sarcasm but I really relate to this release and I love the songs. Catchy, hard hitting, memorable, and angst filled. This is a great modern hard rock record that doesn't sound like anything else being marketed today.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown away!, April 23, 2007
This review is from: Vultures (Dig) (Audio CD)
I have to say that I am totally blown away by this CD. Almost every song is awsome, unlike most CDs with one or two good songs. I had never even heard of Smile Empty Soul and just heard them on a free demo CD I got coming out after a Stone Sour concert. I have not heard Anxiety but really want to hear everything I can from them! This CD is a must buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing album! Good to be back!, October 25, 2006
This review is from: Vultures (Dig) (Audio CD)
This is album is a welcome return for Smile Empty Soul and the new rock sound. Clean sounding guitars and powerful lyrics rule this album, and definately is a good [2nd] sophmore album.

If you loved the first album or if your looking for a great solid ambitious rock album - thou must get this badboy!
