3.0 out of 5 stars Two-piece Horn!!!, June 18, 2010

Wanted to point out that this is a two piece horn and is cut in half at about the center. If you zoom-in on the picture you can see the seam. We didn't expect this. We suppose that it's easier to transport in a collapsed state (cheaper to ship too) but were expecting a one piece horn. It would have been nice to have stated this in the description.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Horn of Africa, July 6, 2010
This review is from: Vuvuzela - South African Horn in your choice of colors (Misc.)
So I got my vuvuzela in the mail today. I ended up playing it the entire WC match, and it just made the experience even better.

A lot of people seem to think that there is a reed or other noise maker in the horn. However, the (in)famous sound is made by buzzing your lips. This horn is not missing any parts. As mentioned in the description, the horn comes in two parts. Mine came pre-assembled, so all I had to do was extend the inner piece. I actually prefer the horn in two pieces, so that it is easier to transport. As far as I can tell, this does not hinder the sound. Oh, and the plastic is sturdy enough for me.

I am glad I made the purchase, and I look forward to being "that vuvuzela guy" at every sporting event I go to from now on.

2.0 out of 5 stars It gets the job done, but is a very cheap piece of plastic!, June 23, 2010

This comes via USPS in two equal length pieces which have to be assembled. I notice that some reviewers were not able to assemble the two pieces. The correct way to do this is to slide the thinner piece through the horn's wide mouth and push it all the way through to the other end, until it won't go any further. Then it sits quite stable.
Blowing it is the next thing to get used to. There is no vibrating reed, or sharp edge and so this is not like blowing a whistle. The inverse nozzle in the tube acts as the excitation source, and you have to blow hard to get some sound. I clocked 120 dB (nearfield SPL). The sound is not as unpleasant as I thought it may be, but it isn't great either. If you keep a music playing speakerphone near the mouth of the horn, you may enjoy the acoustic boost from the horn. It is a good demo of the horn's role in acoustic radiation.

The plastic quality, look and feel is as bad as it gets, and I would have preferred to pay no more than $2 for it. The manufacturing cost I would estimate is 10 cents or less.
