Great knives for the price - forget the nitpicks,
This review is from: Wüsthof Gourmet 14-Piece Deluxe Knife Block Set (Kitchen)
I've owned this knife set for a year now, and I'm 100% satisfied. These Wustof knives are great - they keep their edge, they are razor sharp, and they hold up very well to daily usage.
I was hesitant to buy the Gourmet set based on reviews here on Amazon and elsewhere. The Gourmet knives are stamped, not forged like the Classics. There are very minor design differences that make the Gourmets look slightly different than the Classics. Otherwise, these knives are exactly like Classics. First, the stickers. The Wustof emblem is a sticker on the handle. The emblem is a sticker on the Classics, too, so if the sticker really bothers you that much, go with a different knife manufacturer. My stickers have not faded, worn, or shown any sign of coming off under heavy usage in one year. Take that as you will. Second, rusting. These are carbon steel knives, people. Steel rusts if you let water sit on it. My knives have not rusted in the least. I hand wash them, wipe them off in one swipe with a paper towel, and air dry after use. Not a spot of rust. If you want to stick these in the dishwasher, or want to let them soak in water, you're going to get rust. Take care of these knives and they're fine. I give these knives five stars. Unless you really feel you need forged, ground carbon steel Classics for hundreds more, buy these Gourmets.

Good for <$200, but stickers are stupid,

Forged steel was out of my price range, so I had to go with stamped. ($200 is enough for me, thank you.) The set is nice, a bit light, but good... EXCEPT FOR THE STICKERS. Yes, the red logos on the handles are--in fact--red pixelated laser printer stickers that get ruined in the wash. Get some Goo Gone and spend 20 minutes taking them off before washing the set. Of course, if you were paying for the brand... there is still the logo etched into some of the blades. :)

They are not the top of the line but respectable for a budding gourmet. Proof of their effectiveness can be found underneath the several bandaids I have had to wear since accidentally mishandling the bed knife once and a steak knife once.
What a joy to have decent knives to use in the kitchen. It helps to inspire me as a cook. Great for the price and definitely do not put these in the dishwasher. I am proud to own, even if it is on the lower end of the spectrum, one of the finest knife collections currently on the market.

Very Disappointed,

I did some research and saw that these knives had good reviews. After using them for a few months, I noticed a little rust and the rivets were eroding!!! (I washed these knives by hand only, no dishwasher) I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen it for myself. I didn't expect such a good company to have such poor quality. Maybe Wusthof has better knives, but these are no good.

I was very suprised to find out how thin the steel blades were, so thin they bended while I was cutting an apple.
The knives got rusted and dull after just a few days of use. I looked throughout the website to find customer servcie number however i could not. Will demand my money back, including shipping cost.

I went on a search for something of high quality at a reasonable expense. After some research I came upon Wusthof Knives. The absolute best is their "Classic" set, however I didn't want to spend that much money so I decided to try the "Gourmet" set. It came with a butcher block, steak knives and a free bamboo cutting board for less then $200. I am extremely pleased with my purchase and I recommend them to anyone. I literally threw away my old set and my beautiful Wusthof's proudly grace my new granite counter!

Not good knives,

I own Wusthof knives... and these are the inferior variety. They don't have the weight or heft and they just don't feel right. If you want a set of knives that are better than nothing, get these. But if you really like using great kitchen knives, these don't do it.

Good starter Wusthof set, but don't expect forged metal,

General thoughts: Decent set, Chef and Bread knives stand out. Stamped, not forged. Handles have a slighly cheap appearance. Scissors can be easily taken apart to be washed. Set has all the knives most people will need. If you are used to el-cheapo $25 knife sets, such as I was, these are a major upgrade and will probably keep most amateur chefs perfectly happy. But - not as good as the Classic series.
I went into a local store to buy a Classic set, and they were out. The salesperson pressured me to purchase this instead, and when I got home I decided I really wanted the Classics. I have decided to return these and upgrade even further (Classics cost around TWICE as much for a comparable set incl. steak knives). However, despite the slightly cheap-looking handles, they appear to be perfectly decent kitchen knives. I didn't cut anything with them, but I did set them up on my counter, tested each one for balance, and ran my finger over the edges. They look pretty good overall, although the tang only goes halfway through the knife, and it is even shorter on the two small paring knives (you can see where it stops about mid-handle). And the handle design gave them a bit of a cheap appearance. The block was solid. I am not sure that I can comment on sharpness. I regret that I did not cut anything with them. The serrated Bread Knife was the only one that felt like it could cut me easily when I ran my finger down the blade. Some of them (particularly the steak knives) didn't feel very sharp, but that might not mean anything. The Bread Knife and Chef's Knife were well balanced. The rest of the knives were handle-heavy, including the steak knives. Bottom Line: Get a Classic (or Grand Prix) set if they are in your budget, but if they are not, this seems like a perfectly decent set. Wusthof is known for quality, so these would probably hold up well over the years.

The knives are extremely sharp when they arrive. The most important thing is that you keep the knives sharp with the sharpener provided or the like. Forged steel is not a problem for me as others have noted. For what you get for the price, I don't think you can beat it.

After reading reviews about several brands of knives, I went with Wusthof. Great choice! My husband, who is a great cook, says these are the best he has ever used. Be careful though, they are really sharp!
