One of the problems of assigning a numerical value to an album is that it can lead to some mistaken impressions - namely that a 4 star album is an album comprised of entirely 4 star songs. But rarely is an album ever so consistent, and W is about as hit or miss as it gets.

If you've read anything about planning to rock before this, than you've probably heard about 30 comparisons to the Knife by now. I'd think it was redundant to make the same point here - except that the comparison is just that well deserved. Nearly all of the hallmarks of the Knife's sound are here - sparse electronic instrumentation, warped vocals, and general atmosphere of sinister gloom. Even her striking visual appearance calls to mind the Knife's masked presentation. So what keeps this album from being dismissed as a complete ripoff? Well, for a start, W is infinitely less dance friendly then anything the Knife has ever put out. Also, project mastermind Janine Rostron brings orchestral instruments into the mix, broadening her palette to include strings, and more surprisingly, saxophones.

The most notable distinction, however, is probably Rostron's willingness to push her eccentricities further. In addition to its dissonant, percussive stabs and jarring vocal whoops, the album features obscure and often provocative lyrics. On a deeper thematic level, there seems to be a thread of elements that hint at being at war with one's own identity - Rostron chooses to distort both her voice and visual appearance, and even plays with the concept of gender identity on "I'm Yr Man".

While the sheer daring of this shape-shifting songstress is ultimately something to be admired, it's a mixed bag - more than once Rostron makes a very brave move that turns out to be little better than annoying.

fantastic album. it's eeriness only enhances it's alluring mysteriousness. Her vocals become a necrotic wail against a backround of what sounds like acid jazz meets chamber music... like a David Lynch dream sequence.
love this!

Just a wonderful dark album. A different direction from the previous one but couldn't stop listening to it from track one.
