Shop Fox W1669 1/2 HP 34-inch Bench-Top Radial Drill Press

The Radial Drill Press is one of the most versatile and handy drill presses you can add to your shop. Between the tilt of the head and the tilt of the table, you can drill any angle necessary. You can also use it as a horizontal boring machine. Add to this an incredible swing which allows you to bore to the center of a workpiece that is 34-inches wide and you have one of the best values available in a drill press.

Horizontal Sliding Headstock

This drill press offers the ability to drill wide workpieces up to 34-inches diameter, you can slide the headstock in and out to increase the distance between the drill chuck and the column up to 17-inches. You can also tilt the headstock from 45-degrees clockwise to 90-degrees counterclockwise for drilling angled holes or for horizontal boring machine use. Using the slide and tilt features, you can drill a line of straight or angled holes without the need to reposition your workpiece after drilling each hole.

Tilting Table

The W1669 features a precision ground cast iron table that features adjustable tilt from 90-degrees both left and right. The table can be adjusted for height and angle making this an extremely versatile machine capable of many applications. This drill press also features a safety paddle switch which provides a greater degree of safety over other types of 110 volts on/off switches due to its oversize paddle and removable lock-out key. No more fumbling around to locate the off button. Simply slap the paddle down to switch off power.

Built to Last

The W1669 Radial Drill Press has been specially designed by to provide many years of trouble free service. Close attention to detail, ruggedly built parts and a rigid quality control program assure safe and reliable operation.

This is a good tool for average/common uses. It is reasonably well made but has a bit too much play for fine more precise drilling. You simply cannot assume that things are square. Check, lock it down and check again. Milling using an X-Y vise can be done but you will be working at the outer limits of this press.

Warning: This Drill Press is very UNSTABLE. The motor and head are very heavy compared to the weight of the base. You MUST mount this press to a much heaver bench or base of some type.

The press is not well made. There is a lot of slop in the head and the spindle. The threads are not cut well - in fact the thread cuts are very poor. For run of the mill drilling operations it will work, but you would be much better off spending a bit more and getting an accurate drill press. The press does run quietly and appears to be smooth in its operation.

Putting the machine together is very hard considering the size and lack of complexity of the unit. If one follows the instructions the "clamp shoe" will never be put in. One must lay the press on its side to put the clamp shoe in (it sits loose in a cavity) and then put the base onto the head while it is still laying on its side with the cavity down.

I am sorry I purchased this machine.

I was looking for a multi purpose drill press and price to the door was why I bought this model from Amazon. The reviews posted about this were spot on. Ck your set up tighten recheck again. Kinda cheap and flimsy but for the money it's got ton's of features.

Radial drill presses were reviewed on finewoodworking, prompting me to buy this one. Right out of the box, the first test hole was 90 deg in both axes. Plus, it has a 17" reach, people! For the price, I consider this an amazing bargain, and suspect most complaints don't take this into account.

It is great but a little under power. Table lock down
must be very tight to prevent moving side to side.
