4.0 out of 5 stars Review the right item!

3.0 out of 5 stars Buyer beware
This may be a good product but for the price I was frustrated. The plate you attach the hoses to is too small for my windows (they never mentioned window dimensions in the description). It also leaked. I would have returned it but it's too heavy and costly. I have to try to make it work next summer. Overall, not happy to have this much trouble with such a costly item.

Its two years since I purchased this and happened upon this link today. I remember doing a great amount of research when I bought this unit. It is NOT like the one being reviewed with 2 stars.

One key point - it has two hoses - input and output (not one like many units out there). It's very good at evaporating the water it takes out of the room (the two hoses are supposedly responsible for this efficiency). I have yet to empty the tank. The unit comes with a window package that holds the tubes in place (its made of heavy duty plastic).

As to moving it around, no big problems - it is a beast to move on the stairs, but ..... its an air conditioner, not a fan.

I normally use it to cool down a 20x20 room (9 foot ceilings). It does take longer than I'd like, but if it's a humid night, it gets the room in a "sleepable" condition in about 1 hour.

The reason for not giving it 5 stars is that the remote control gives you options that you can't get from the panel. If you lose the remote, you lose the functionality (there may be a secret set of buttons you push to get the function, I haven't figure them out yet). The manufacturer's site is lacking in docs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great A/C, September 7, 2008
This review is from: SPT WA-1140DE Dual-Hose 11,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control (Kitchen)
I bought this AC after reading the 2 star review and I am very glad I did. I live in the college dorms and this AC does an excellent job cooling my room and I have not experienced any of the concerns posted by the other reviewer. I've got a few other friends with Portable A/C units and none work as well as this one.

The wheels roll fine on the dorm room carpet, I've had this A/C for over a month and have yet to empty the water tank, and this A/C gets my room as cold as I could ever want it, and could get it even colder if I so desired.

I got this unit on sale for ~$230 and this has been a great investment.

Price is good, Delivery was good, After 2 weeks of use--the unit is running very good so-far.
The best part about the unit is---it's the only model/company that has an AC that will turn itself back on after a power-outage!!
Here in Los Angeles, we have many power outages every summer.
I looked high and low and the SPT is the only unit offering this feature.

Plus***the sales dept./salesman, Mr. Wyn at SPT is VERY helpful, extremely knowledgable and customer satisfaction oriented.

I give their customer service/sales an A++, and their AC unit an A+.

Enjoy

1.0 out of 5 stars Leaks Water, July 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: SPT WA-1140DE Dual-Hose 11,000-BTU Portable Air Conditioner with Remote Control (Kitchen)
My unit had great cooling abilities. It was able to easily cool my living and dining rooms, but it leaked water all over the floor. Initially, the leakage started about hour into operating and it really leaked after I turned it off. It seemed to release all water the tank may have held. It just drained onto my floor.

This unit is supposed to have a built in reservoir tank for holding water. The compressor is supposed to shut down when tank is full and a indicator light is supposed to come on to alert that tank needs drainage. I never had a problem with water leaking from the drain plug. It was leaking from underneath.

It may have been damaged in transport. The reservoir tank is built into the unit and cannot be seen, but I believe mine was cracked. A real disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Machine for the Money, July 6, 2011

I purchased this unit about a month ago for my infant daughter's room. We have casement windows so a window unit was not an option. After some rigging with a pane of plexi glass my local hardware store was kind enough to cut to size, I am very happy with this unit. Actually wish I could get another for my own bedroom since it does a lot better job dehumidifying the air than our wall unit. It's pretty quiet & when it is off the vent hides itself away so as not to be a dust catcher. I'll keep you posted on how it performs over time!

When I recived the unit it was covered in oil like substance. I could tell the box had been opened and re-shut. To me it seems like they where trying to sell an item that had been already returned. I am returning it for the same one. If this one doesn't work I am going to get a refund for sure. They also need to package the product better. It was a joke how they had this 100lb ac packed.

I needed a portable air conditioner for my 100 sq. ft. server room, which had just a little more heat load than the central air conditioning could keep up with. Temperatures were getting up to 78 degrees in the server room at mid day in the summer weather. Outdoor temperatures have been around 105 deg. I looked into having an air conditioning company add additional air flow to the room but, considering the high cost of doing so and worries about having the central air fail as it did a few years ago, I decided to add an assist air conditioning unit.

Since CC&R's restricted the use of window air conditioners, I went with the SPT WA-1140DE portable air conditioner. To test the capabilities of the new portable air conditioner, I closed the central air vent to the room and watched the temperature with the SPT WA-1140DE providing the only cooling to the room. It had no problem maintaining temperature in the server room at 73 deg. at mid day. I now have peace of mind knowing that this unit can provide cooling assist to the main AC system and take the full heat load in the event the central air fails.

The instruction manual states that when outside temperatures are above 95 deg., you should use a single hose configuration, which I did. In my opinion this configuration works quite well in our hot desert environment where outside temps are frequently triple digits in the summer.

Critical to my choice, the The SPT WA-1140DE portable air conditioner was the only unit I found that restarts if power is lost. The unit runs fairly quietly. I would estimate that it isn't any louder than a conventional window air conditioning unit of similar capacity. It has now been running several months, during which time it has required no maintenance nor needed to have the condensation water reservoir emptied.

4.0 out of 5 stars Exhaust hoses akwardly located, July 2, 2011

This is the second portable air conditioner we've purchased for our home to help cool the hot side of the house, as a supplement to the central air. The other is a single-exhaust AC made by a company or brand name no longer in existence (Everstar). This SPT does work really well in cooling down the room, as effectively as the Everstart, but the Everstar has more oomph and more air flow coming out so it feels more substantial.

The dual hose design seems to make it more efficient because outside air, not cooled interior air, is used to cool down the motor. However, note that the instructions tell you not to use the dual hose mode when the outside temp is above 90. The two hoses do double the annoyance factor when you're trying to take it in and out of the window.

My biggest beef with this model is that the exhaust hoses face up toward the ceiling. If you are exhausting at the bottom of a window, especially if the window goes low to the ground, you have to move the AC 3 or so feet away from the window to allow the hose space to bend up then down like an S. It would have been better if the hoses went straight out from the back of the AC at a 90 degree angle. My Everstar has the 90 degree straight out exhaust, but it's too low and so has to bend upward. Just take into consideration where the exhausts are and your personal window application/height. An ideal design for me would have had the exhaust at the center of the back of the machine, at a 90 degree angle. But it's not a deal breaker. This puppy puts out great cold and is relatively pretty quiet.

One other thing - I am not sure how the evaporative process works but the lack of a water holding tank is nice. With my Everstar I had to empty the water reservoir pretty frequently on humid days.

The unit cools 2 small upstairs bedrooms well. It is quieter that the wall sleeve units in my apartment. Unfortunately the unit arrived with a cracked bottom that I did not discover until the carpet was completely soaked.
