Book Description

All You Want to Know May 1, 1998

The United States Constitution presents and explains the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Amendments to the Constitution in a way you've never experienced before—narrated by legendary news personality Walter Cronkite.

The United States Constitution takes you back to Philadelphia in 1787—to four months filled with back-room deals, political scheming, and fierce debates. You'll feel the full impact of conflicts and passions that nearly tore apart the Philadelphia Convention, the ratification process, and the infant American nation, and understand the documents that shaped our country in ways you've never known before.

Expertly narrated by Walter Cronkite, The United States Constitution brings the most treasured documents of American history to illuminating life!

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Regrettably, this program cannot be trusted, even though narrator Walter Cronkite's celebrity may secure its economic success. The cover pledges a dramatic spotlight on the events in Philadelphia 1798 for general audiences who might appreciate hearing "all you want to know" in four cassettes. Unfortunately, it is more reminiscent of a pedantic, poorly organized history report. The absorbing events, passionate debates, and brilliant (if sometimes devious) men who shaped our Constitution are practically eliminated. Potentially engaging subjects?the issue of slavery, for example?are diminished by bits of canned synthesizer music and pretentious readings from unidentified actors. One fact we need to know, and are never told, is the name of the author who is interpreting this most important document in tedious and redundant prose. This insipid muddle is a slipshod approach to political science and an injustice to the complexity and the importance of the subject.?Barbara Mann, Adelphi Univ., Garden City, NY

From AudioFile

This new imprint from Simon & Schuster provides abridged titles from the Knowledge Products series. This title captures the best features of the series: a single skillful narrator speaking about some area of knowledge, punctuated by actors portraying the historical figures at various points. In describing the history and ideas behind the Constitution, Walter Cronkite, "the most trusted man in America," does his usual splendid job in his authoritative newscaster's voice. The actors sound like an educated eighteenth-century American elite and, to a person, speak precisely and meaningfully. Short musical punctuations round out an effective and informative presentation.
