Book Description

February 2004 Pen & Sword Military Classics (Book 23)
From 1792-1815 Europe was convulsed by a series of wars, first against revolutionary France and then the empire of Napoleon Bonaparte. The period opened with an untrained French citizen army defying an alliance of major powers, and climaxed with France controlling the whole of continental Europe. It was the flexibility and tactical brilliance of Napoleon that burst the straitjacket of formal 18th century land warfare.

The author takes as detailed samples the battles of Turcoing, Castiglione, Marengo, Eylau, Salamanca and Waterloo together with the two sea battles of Algeciras. The tactics and strategy of land and sea warfare are explored and discussed in the diversely illustrated book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book to start you off, October 6, 2010
This review is from: WARFARE IN THE AGE OF BONAPARTE (Pen & Sword Military Classics) (Paperback)
This book was one of the first Napoleonic books I ever bought. I have owned this book for three decades now and treasure dearly. I must have read it over a dozen times in all that time because it is so well thought out and written. Michael Glover's book is a great read for those who want to gain a broad understanding of the period. What makes this book even more relevant is his use of eyewitness accounts and recollections from many contemporary personages who were there. His chapters are very well chosen for their important relevance for those relatively new to the period. He also added a complete section for the understanding of sea warfare of the time to put it all into perspective.

I thoroughly recommend this book for someone just starting out in the period who really wants to gain a broad overview and understanding of the period without getting too bogged down by the in-depth analysis of more modern titles. This book will lay a solid foundation for you to build on as you build your Napoleonic library as it did for me nearly three decades ago.

Regards,

Shane
