This thin volume speaks well to the ongoing debate about Polish-Jewish relations before and during World War II. Polish historian Bartoszewski worked during the war for the Polish Council for Aid to Jews, which attempted to assist the 70,000 to 100,000 Jews remaining in Warsaw after the main liquidation of the ghetto there in 1942. In spare, precise prose, he outlines the efforts of the Council and other organizations to supply surviving Jews with forged documents, food, and shelter, and to arouse public opinion in the West. His memoir is pertinent as evidence of positive Polish attitudes and responses to the Nazi's Final Solution. Recommended for academic, special, and larger public libraries. James B.
