This review is from: Watchers at the Shrine (Contents S) (Paperback)
"Watchers at the Shrine" is the third book in Ure's Plague trilogy.
1. Plague aka Plague 99 (1989) 2. After the Plague aka Come Lucky April (1992) 3. Watchers at the Shrine (1994) I liked the first book Plague a lot. "After the Plague" was good, too, but character development was a little sketchy and I would have liked to have read a bit more about the years between the books. "Plague" takes place right before the disease hits and during the days of the plague and follows three teenagers that survived. "After the Plague" is 100 years after the devastation and is about some of the original teens' descendants. Daniel grew up in a male dominant community. He goes exploring, wanting to find his great-grandmother's diary, and happens upon members of a female dominant community. We get to "Watchers at the Shrine" and its 150 years after the plague (per the back of the book. April from "After the Plague" has a 15 year old son and he ends up being sent away to Daniel's community to save his manhood. He ends up living in a neighboring community and this book tells about those happenings. First of all, this is a VERY short book - 154 pages, large print. Very little character development and the whole book felt rushed and incomplete. It's too bad -the series started out good and steadily got worse with each book. The story idea was great, just not executed too well. It's worth reading all three books, if you start, just so you find out what happens but don't expect consistency in the author's writing. As I've written on my other two books reviews of this series, I don't believe this series is appropriate for young children. It's pretty grim with more adultish themes.
