Spin The Wheel But No Deal, July 3, 2011
This review is from: WCW Halloween Havoc 92 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Another event that I was able to check out via the internet in the 1992 edition of Halloween Havoc. The major feud going into this event was the one pitting the "Franchise" of WCW in Sting against the newest edition to the WCW roster in former WWF star Jake "The Snake" Roberts. However, this would be the first of two times that WCW would use a gimmick known as "Spin the Wheel, Make the Deal" in which a wheel full of matches would spinned during the event & decide what kind of match stipulation that the Sting/Jake match would have. Now keep in mind that I saw the video version of the event so this event was edited down to 2 hours along with the opening match which was a six men tag being removed from the tape.
Ricky Steamboat vs Brian Pillman. This was during the time in which Pillman had just turned heel & this match was a preview of a future tag team feud involving the development of the Hollywood Blondes. Steamboat worked over Pillman's arm in the early stages relying on shoulderlocks & armdrags. Due to Pillman's new change of attitude, he actually added more heel tactics than what was expected from him while at the same time still delivering some of his high-flying offense such as a flying headscissors & catching Steamboat in mid-air with a dropkick. Good match between these two that would be overshadowed by their series of tag team matches in the following year.
WCW United States Championship: Vader vs Nikita Koloff. The story here was that Rick Rude was the current United States Champion & was demanded to defend the title against Nikita Koloff despite the fact that Rude had a shot at NWA Championship later on in the show so Rude was able to pick a substitute in Big Van Vader. On top of that, the other match stipulations was that this would be a No Disqualification match, Madusa & Paul E. Dangerously were banned from ringside & if Koloff wins, then he would win the title. This was a stiff match to say the least as you could see both men really taking it to each other before it was one power move that left such an effect on Koloff that it seemed like an audible was called in the ring to end the match right afterwards.
WCW Tag Team Champions Dustin Rhodes & Barry Windham vs "Dr. Death" Steve Williams & "Stunning" Steve Austin. For those who don't know, Terry Gordy was originally scheduled to be Williams' partner to finish this feud but due to a breach of contract (according to Bill Watts), Gordy was fired & Williams picked Steve Austin. There was also a tease of tension between Rhodes & Windham that was played out in the early stages of the match. Despite that though, Rhodes & Windham stuck to business in the early going by cutting the ring in half & taking advantage of the lack of tag time that Williams & Austin had before both Steves started to build some momentum on their side & use the same tag team tactics in isolating the ring to keep Rhodes in the ring for the longest time. This went to the full 30 minute time limit as it was just classic tag team wrestling & the match of the night for me.
NWA Champion Masahiro Chono vs Rick Rude. This match was actually assigned two different officials for both men as Rude had Harley Race as his own personal referee while Chono had his own Japanese representative referee as well. Rude was stalling in the early stages of the match to try to slow the pace down in his favor while Chono was content on keeping this a wrestling match instead of taking it to the floor. Both men traded ground holds for the majority of the match with the match slowing down each time it seemed the match was going to pick up before it was the referees that ended up playing a factor in the outcome. This was one of those matches that really slow & boring as these two just didn't "click" together on this night with the ending leaving everyone including the audience scratching their heads.
WCW Champion Ron Simmons vs The Barbarian. The Barbarian had the support of Cactus Jack on the outside as it was billed that Jack had been preparing him for this contest. Both men tried to use their power offense but each continued to cancel each other out until Jack began to get involved in order for the Barbarian to gain the momentum. Jack would continue to get involved to the point that it ended up costing the Barbarian in the end.
Coal Miners Glove Match: Sting vs Jake Roberts. Earlier in the night, the "Spin The Wheel, Make The Deal" gimmick had chosen the Coal Miners Glove match in which a heavy glove would be placed on a pole high above the ring with the object being the first man to get it would be able to use it. Both men worked on each other's arms early to prevent any attempt of climbing while also relying on a few wrestling holds to wear the other out. This was a nice match but it really came off as weak due to the gimmick of the match along with the ending leaving you with a "That's IT?" reaction to the point where the crowd didn't even react.
Overall, this was one of those WCW cards that started off good but then the final few matches really brought it down & even though there were some good matches, the only memorable match here was the tag team title match as the main event & the Steamboat/Pillman match have already been released on DVD so this is one event that I would pass on as there were better events from this era of WCW.

Mid-card saves this one!, June 17, 2008
This review is from: WCW Halloween Havoc 92 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Lately, I've been going back to look at old WCW/NWA cards. This one wasn't a great one as the main-events just sucked! The mid-card pretty much keeps this one from going down the toliet! Let's get to it:
Tom Zenk,Johnny Gunn & Shane Douglas Vs. Arn Anderson,Michael Hayes, and Bobby Eaton - Three lower mid-card guys Vs. three of the greatest tag team wrestlers ever and the mid-card guys win?! What kind of crap was that. You have Arn Anderson who was one of the Four Horsemen (not to mention his teams with Tully Blanchard and Ole Anderson respectively), Michael Hayes with the Freebirds and Bobby Eaton with the Midnight Express and they lose to these guys?!
Anyway, the match itself wasn't bad and the crowd felt like I did as they pretty much cheered Anderson, Eaton and Hayes and booed the hell out of Zenk, Douglas and Gunn! Match ends when Gunn catches Hayes in the Lou Thez Press.
Ricky Steamboat Vs. Brian Pillman - This should've been an amazing bout but as it was, it was just okay. These two were at their prime and this match should've been much better. Ends when Pillman got a flying bodypress reversed by Steamboat.
Big Van Vader Vs. Nikita Koloff - This match makes the card pick up a bit. This was originally scheduled to be "Ravishing" Rick Rude Vs. Nikita for the WCW U.S. title but somehow they got Vader to sub for Rude with the stipulation that if Vader lost, Nikita would win Rude's U.S. belt. This was a very hard hitting contest that saw Nikita take a very nasty powerbomb that broke his collarbone for real! Vader picks up the win there.
Barry Windham and Dusty Rhodes Vs. Steve "Dr Death Williams" and Steve Austin (WCW/NWA World Tag Team Title Match) - The best match on the card and should be on anyone's "Best Of Tag Team" list! Ends in a draw with Rhodes and Windham retaining the belts.
"Ravishing" Rick Rude Vs. Masahiro Chono (NWA World Title Match) - This was a slow but interesting technical match. Ends when Chono accidentally "Mafia Kicks" special referee Harley Race. Chono, in the meantime, got a submission on Rude in his STF (now known as the STFU) BUT it was from alternate referee Kensuki Sasaki. Race reversed the decision and gave Rude the win but Chono retained the title.
Ron Simmons(Faarooq)VS. The Barbarian w/Cactus Jack (WCW World Title Match) - This is where the card slows down again! Simmons did have some good matches as WCW champion but this wasn't one of them! Ends when Simmons beat The Barbarian with a sloppy looking powerslam.
Sting Vs. Jake "The Snake" Roberts (Coal Miner's Glove Match) - A big letdown considering how hot their feud was at the time! Not the best match for either guy. Ends when Sting punches Jake in the ribs with the glove, causing the cobra that Jake brought down to bite Jake in the face!
Steamboat/Pillman, Koloff/Vader, Chono/Rude and the fabulous tag team match saves this one from going into the toilet! [...]
