5.0 out of 5 stars All Great except Main Event
The Matches leading up to Hogan/Nash were great. Those two
were a real letdown. The best matches were the two 6 man and the
Tag title.

This review is from: WCW Road Wild '99 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My "Blast From WCW's Past" continues here with the final Road Wild event back in 1999. Around this time, Ric Flair was no longer the WCW President & Hollywood Hogan returned to WCW & regained the WCW Championship, went back to wearing the classic red & yellow colors, left the nWo and alligned himself with Sting & Goldberg while Kevin Nash (the last remaining active member of the nWo Wolfpac) turned heel & alligned himself with Sid Vicious & Rick Steiner leading into each member of these alliances facing each other at the event with one person retiring at the end of the night. Stevie Ray left the black & white nWo (eventually leading to the end of that group) to rejoin his brother Booker T to reform Harlem Heat. And Dennis Rodman returned to WCW interested in Randy Savage's valet, Gorgeous George. Also Shane Douglas arrived to WCW & helped form the Revolution group with his former ECW alumni in Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Perry Saturn. And as a side note, this was the last PPV of the Eric Bischoff era of WCW since he would be removed from power right before the Fall Brawl PPV.

Rey Mysterio Jr., Billy Kidman, Eddie Guerrero vs. Vampiro & Insane Clown Posse - The group that would go on to be known as the Filthy Animals go against the group known as the Deadpool. This was a fun opening match as the Filthy Animals always deliver while Vampiro was coming into his own at this point in WCW, I.C.P. weren't slouches either, and Raven playing mind games on the outside. Good opening match and as a side note, this was the last WCW PPV appearence of Raven as he would jump to ECW a short time later.

WCW Tag Team Champions Triad vs. Harlem Heat - Unlike the previous tag team matches where the Triad used the "Freebird" rule where any two members of the group could be active in the match at anytime, DDP was scheduled for another match later in the night so he wasn't available for this match so this was a regular tag team rules match. This was a nice back & forth match that saw DDP's appearence backfire & help Harlem Heat regain the WCW Tag Team Titles they lost 3 years earlier.

The Revolution vs. West Texas Rednecks - Unfortunally, since this was an old VHS tape...the tape was extremely dirty & eaten so I can't comment on this match.

Buff Bagwell vs. Ernest Miller - See above.

No Disqualification Match: WCW United States Champion Chris Benoit vs. Diamond Dallas Page - This feud revolved about Page talking about Benoit's mother? This was a real physical bout as Benoit is as intense as it gets while DDP was heavily in his prime during his WCW run. The "No DQ" rule came into play at various time by Page like shoving the referee around, using a belt as a weapon, and DDP's Triad members getting involved before Benoit overall all odds alone to retain the United States Championship.

Sting vs. Sid Vicious - Sting started off by taking Sid on the outside & over the guardrails before the match got back in the ring where Sid regained his momentum & dominated with his power offense. Sting got a shot here & there but only to eventually overpowered straight to victory. This was just Sting being a body for Sid to get over on in this average match.

Goldberg vs. Rick Steiner - They started off right off the bat punching & kicking each other before Steiner dominated by using Goldberg's own kneebrace against him before Goldberg made his spear/jackhammer comeback for the victory. The match was short & watchable but nothing special.

Dennis Rodman vs. Randy Savage - Rodman started the match off wild & remained that way as both men knocked out various people like referees (four of them) & cameramen along with brawling on the outside, up the ramp onto the entranceway, and even tipping over a portable toilet backstage. George appeared & helped Savage get the win in this was a wild match. As a side note, Savage promised that the driver of the mysterious white Hummer that kept appearing throughout WCW would be bodyguarding George...but you never saw him.

Retirement Match: WCW Champion Hulk Hogan vs. Kevin Nash - If anyone watched the WWE Confidential piece on WCW, you'll remember that Booker T said that, "wrestlers had no intention of "bringing the house down" & just walked through the matches to make sure they got to the bar on time." That quote perfectly described this match. For a main event match in which your fighting for your career, they never left first gear & the entire match just seemed dull. Despite a couple of "Hogan" chants far between, it was dead quiet during this match. Something huge was missing here as the guys just seemed to walk through this match & it was a real bad way to end the show.

In the end, the opening match along with the matches involving the Triad members delivered along with Randy Savage & Dennis Rodman had a wild entertaining brawl but the rest of the card however was watchable to average. This is one PPV I would check out if you have some spare cash to spend or if this is at a real low price.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best WCW ppv, but not the worst one either, October 15, 2007
This review is from: WCW Road Wild '99 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
August 14, 1999
Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
Sturgis, South Dakota

Commentary for the event was done by Mike Tenay, Tony Schiavone, and Bobby Heenan.

Rey Mysterio Jr, Billy Kidman, and Eddie Guerrero vs Vampiro & The Insane Clown Posse (with Raven) - <Good solid opener>
WCW Tag Titles: Kanyon & Bam Bam Bigelow vs Harlem Heat (Booker T & Stevie Ray) - <standard tag match, nothing spectacular except that Harlem Heat reunited for the first time in 2 or 3 years>
Revolution (Perry Saturn, Shane Douglas, and Dean Malenko) vs West Texas Rednecks (Curt Hennig, Barry Windham, and Bobby Duncum Jr) with Kendall Windham -
Buff Bagwell vs Ernest Miller (with Sonny Onoo) - <skip it!!>
U.S. Title - No Dq: Chris Benoit vs Diamond Dallas Page - <not as violent as I would have expected for a No DQ match, DDP had 80% of the offense, Benoit hardly did anything>
Sid Vicous vs Sting - <extremely rare, Sting got pinned CLEAN!!>
Goldberg vs Rick Steiner - <typical Goldberg ppv match>
Grudge Match: Randy Savage vs Dennis Rodman -
WCW World Title RETIREMENT Match: Hulk Hogan vs Kevin Nash -

5.0 out of 5 stars Goldberg and Hulkamania runs wilder then ever, October 24, 1999

This review is from: Wcw: Road Wild [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This show had great matches involving WCW's youngest tallent and best established. My favorite match was Hulk Hogan VS Kevin Nash in a retirement match that has everyone's nerves on end. WCW really outdid themselves with this exciting wrestling event.

1.0 out of 5 stars the biggest star in this movie was Jay Lenos chin, March 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wcw: Road Wild [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I thought this movie had one good match and that was when they had to take a break when the wrestlers left. I thought that Jay Leno and DDP vs. Hogan and Eric Bishoff was probably the worst match they ever put on a wcw pay per view. I wish that DDP would have tried to diamond cut Jay Leno even though he was on his team, but I guess he couldnt do that because he probably couldnt get his arms around the head of a guy that has such a big chin and is so stupid he couldnt wrestle even if the wrestlers he was facing were just laying down.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure WCW; what more could I ask for?, July 28, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: WCW Road Wild '99 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
WCW proved that they didn't need Vince Russo's horrendous booking to put on a good show many, many times before this PPV, and Road Wild proved the point yet again. It's an entertaining outdoor event smack in the middle of the Sturgis bike rally, guaranteeing a good audience. Tony Schiavone, Bobby Heenan, and Mike Tenay do a good job of calling the action there.
First is a 6-man tag match, Vampiro w/ the Insane Clown Posse vs. Eddy Guerrero, Kidman and Rey Mysterio Jr. The crowd was on for these cruiserweights. Not a bad match, esp. to open the show.
Next was Harlem Heat vs. Bam Bam Bigelow and Kanyon. Bam Bam needs to retire. Could he ever actually wrestle?
Then we see another 6-man tag. Kurt Hennig, Barry Windham and Bobby Duncum Jr. (with Kendall Windham) go up against the Revolution (Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko, Shane Douglas). Not bad.
If I had to say a match here was mediocre, it would have to be The Cat vs. Buff Bagwell. That went absolutely nowhere, and the first few minutes were wasted with no wrestling whatsoever.
Things pick up after that when Chris Benoit defends his US Title against Diamond Dallas Page. A very good match put on here, with both men displaying their wrestling skills, especially DDP. Plus, watch it for a classic blooper: Bigelow tries to interfere for DDP and executes a truly horrendous top-rope move that is worth watching over and over and over, solidifying the humorous aspect of the event.
After a motorcycle is given away, there's Sid Vicious vs. Sting, a match that delivers everything expected with a surprising ending, too.
Rick Steiner and Goldberg have a short match that doesn't really pick up; Steiner just hits him with his own knee brace for three or so minutes. Ending not impressive, either.
Randy Savage vs. Dennis Rodman is surprisingly entertaining. Savage actually shoves Rodman into a port-a-potty and tips it over!
Plus, we get to see Hulk Hogan vs. Kevin Nash. Both men are aging, as we can see, but Hulk couldn't really do much except take a few bumps since he recently came back from a knee injury. Nash did better, beating up on him for most of it until Hogan hulked up. Definitely not one of your better Hogan matches, but since he's back in the red and yellow, it's still worth watching for any wrestling fan. So is this PPV, as well.
And I don't want to be critical since I know this isn't a forum or anything, but what was that reviewer from June 23rd talking about? I think he was a little confused. Maybe more than a little. But, I assure you, I know what I'm talking about. Basically Road Wild was a good and satisfying event. If you can get it cheap enough, go for it.

This outdoor PPV was actually pretty good. It had some strong single matches and suprisingly none of the main event matches were interrupted, and so you got to see a clear-cut winner, something which is very rare these days. The best matches of the event were:
- ICP/Vampiro V Rey Jnr/Eddie Geurerro/Kidman (6 man tag)
- Texas Rednecks V The Revolution (6 man tag)
- DDP V Chris Benoit (US title match)
- Sting V Sid Vicious
- Rodman V Macho Man *Very entertaining*
- Hulk Hogan V Kevin Nash (world title match)

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I'm wasting my time writing a review on this, December 24, 2001
This review is from: WCW Road Wild '99 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
WCW should be ashamed for actually submiting there audiance to this garbage, and asking for sixty bucks for the privilage of veiwing what has to be one of the worst PPV in history. I'm not like the biggest Kevin Nash fan but even he doesn't deserve to put Hogan over like this. I mean lets be serious a 50 year old cripple isn't going to pop back up after getting dropped on his head and expect anyone to believe its genuine. And Rick Stiener why does he put up with this? Goldberg waits for is spots the entire match and pretty much refuses to sell Stiener, no wonder WCW really slid during this time. The rest of the PPV was actually pretty good but these to matches burn this PPV.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Final Sturgis PPV for WCW, October 15, 1999
By
CactusJack (Truth or Consequences, New Mexico) - See all my reviews

Ok, the card wasn't spectacular, I'll admit that. But not a single one of the big main event matches ended in a screw job, which is pretty good for a WCW event in this day and age.

Some of the matches were: Harlem Heat vs. The Triad (Tag Title Match) Revolution vs. West Texas Rednecks Kidman, Mysterio, Guererro vs. ICP and Vampiro DDP vs. Chris Benoit(US title Match) Sting vs. Sid Vicious Goldberg vs. Rick Steiner Macho Man vs. Dennis Rodman Hulk Hogan vs. Kevin Nash(WCW World Heavyweight Title Match)

This PPV had a good card, although I question the reasoning behind putting Savage in a match with that little punk Rodman. This is also Hulk's 1st PPV back in the red and yellow. I would reccomend buying this video if it was 30 bucks like WWF's PPV videos...
