WCW Spring Stampede - Best PPV of the year,
By A Customer
This review is from: WCW Spring Stampede 1999 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This event was the best Spring Stampede ever and t best PPV of the year. The Bam-Bam/Hak match was amazing and the Kidman-Rey Reay match was unbelievable but i thought the main event was ugly. It should have been a lot better with four of the greatest superstars in the game. Anyway, dont spend 50$. A great PPV but for that much money i expected a lot more.

My WCW memories continue here with another old VHS that I have in my collection. I remember during this time that WCW was changing the direction of the company & even decide to focus on the undercard & push different talents in attempt to bring back the magic that the company once had. To add into that, WCW even changed to a new logo to continue with the changes. Now during this time, Hollywood Hogan had lost the WCW Championship to Ric Flair at the previous PPV event with both men actually switching roles (Hogan being the face, Flair being the heel) while at the same time, Diamond Dallas Page was being pushed into the main event picture along with Sting returning to add more drama to the title picture.
Juventud Guerrera vs Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg was this masked cruiserweight that had a short run in WCW that was known for his speed & quickness. This match clearly lived up to what was supposed to be as these two went at it with speed & quickness while delivering impactful moves along the way. Both men went to air many times but it was one move from the top rope that made the difference in what was a great opening contest & a nice way to kick off the show. Hardcore Match: Bam Bam Bigelow vs Hak. Hak was the name given to ECW's Sandman. These two wasted no time as they brawled at the entrance stage right from the getgo including a spot where Hak splashed Bam Bam through a table with weapons like the guardrailing, fire extinguisher, singapore cane & so much more being used. The ending was really something to check out since it was something that hadn't been seen before at the time. Scotty Riggs vs Mikey Whipwreck. A long & boring filler. Konnan vs Disco Inferno. This was one of those matches that wasn't bad but there really was nothing noteworthy that happened past that. Watchable but I really didn't care to see this match. WCW Cruiserweight Champion Rey Mysterio vs Billy Kidman. For those that don't remember, this was during the time where Mysterio didn't have his mask on so this match gets lost in time since WWE doesn't acknowledge that Rey has lost his mask before. Both men were tag team partners so this started off as a true gentleman contest before both men picked up the pace with meshing their high-flying offense with great wrestling along the way. One of the best matches on the card & I would call it a good lost match for the fact that I stated above. Raven & Perry Saturn vs Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko. Great wrestling match between these four but seriously, did you expect any difference from these guys? Not much I can say about this one past it being a great wrestling match with Raven twisting the rules by bringing in a chair & table including Saturn splashing a table from the top turnbuckle & Benoit doing a sick headbutt onto a steel chair. WCW United States Championship: Booker T vs Scott Steiner. The finals of the tournament to crown a new United States Champion due to Ric Flair stripping Scott Hall of the title. Before the match got started, Steiner was really showing his heel persona as he just wouldn't stop going at it with the fans at ringside. This match was similar to their previous match at Uncensored the month prior as this was another nice match to watch between these two with Steiner actually resorting to a cheap tactic to win the gold. Goldberg vs Kevin Nash. This didn't top their Starrcade match as this match was short & sweet as the purpose was really all about Goldberg getting his revenge on Nash. WCW Champion Ric Flair vs Hollywood Hogan vs Diamond Dallas Page vs Sting w/Guest Referee Randy Savage. The returns of Sting & Savage here with Savage sporting a new look along the way. This match started off wild with everyone taking turns brawling with each other at various points of the match. The big issue here was Hogan getting injured at one point of the match that actually lead to him being eliminated from the match. From there, this was a great main event as all three men put on a great showing before Randy Savage showed whose side he was really on as he made sure that Flair didn't walk out as champion allowing DDP to fulfill his ultimate destiny. There were a few matches on here that didn't set well with me or may not set well with others but there were enough matches on here depending on what style you are looking that really makes this a memorable WCW event during this era that I would recommend if you can get your hands on it.

Not Bad, but it could have been promoted better,

This PPV had a little piece of everything in it from an anything goes match between Hak and Bam Bam Bigelow to Rey mysterio Jr. and Kidman to Kevin Nash and Goldberg (better match than at Starrcade) although I wish it had ended differently to a four way free for all for the world title. Like I said it is good even if it didn't seem good at the time. BUY IT-------------------------------------------Somewhere reasonable if possible (good luck if you live in South Florida)

The greatest Spring Stampede ever!,

Great PPV! The first 4 matches were OK, but starting with Misterio vs. Kidman, it was spectacular! Rey Misterio Jr. vs. Kidman was the greatest match of the night, not to mention the greatest cruiserweight match ever!

The movie was action packed! It was great to see Rey Jr. and Kidman go at it in one of the fastest action packed matches of the year. The main event match was a 4-way match for the heavyweight title and it was the best finsh of the year. I would suggest you to get this video!!!

WCW Spring Stampede 1999 4/11/1999 Tacoma Dome,Tacoma Washington Jueventud Guerrera pinned Blitzkrieg.***** cruserweight match.Juvi won with an Juvi driver off the top rope.Sick spots too! Bam Bam Bigelow defeated Hak(The Sandman)in an hardcore match.Sick spots here too! Scotty Riggs defeated Mikey Whipwreck(No comment.I couldnt blame the fans for chanting "boring"!!!!!!). Konnan defeated Disco Inferno(Hey is Konnan still around in TNA?Just wondering). WCW Cruserweight Title Match; Rey Mysterio Jr defeated Billy Kidman to retain the WCW Cruserweight Title.*** star match. Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko w/Arn Anderson defeated Raven and Perry Saturn when Malenko pinned Raven. WCW United States Tournament Final; Booker T pinned Scott Steiner to win the vacant WCW United States Title.(Another no comment match.Nice posing Steiner!). Goldberg defeated Kevin Nash(Wow,much worster than their match at Starrcade 98). WCW Title Match w/guest referee Randy Savage "Macho Man" DDP defeated Ric Flair,Sting, and Hulk Hogan excuse me Hollywood Hulk Hogan in an four corners match to win the WCW Title. Overall a 50/50.The choice is yours.Typically I prefer old WWF ppvs like;Survivor Series 91,SummerSlam 92,Survivor Series 92,King of the Ring 93,Royal Rumble 94,King of the Ring 94,Ok you get the point!Im an WWE fan and not and WCW fan by heart!

My WCW fix continues as here's another PPV I found in an old box. WCW around this time was going through a lot of changes as far as booking & just the overall direction of the company (including a new logo). Despite being the leader of the nWo, Hollywood Hogan was slowly starting to become a babyface again while Ric Flair (who was WCW President at that time) was starting to turn heel, WCW also started an unofficial hardcore division featuring old faces from ECW like Hak (Sandman) & Bam Bam Bigelow, the nWo was slowly beginning to fade away, and were starting to pay more attention to the booking of the undercard more than just putting guys out there & hotshotting angles to have matches.
Juventud Guerrera vs. Blitzkrieg - For those who don't know or can't remember, Blitzkrieg was a masked crusierweight that was around WCW for a short time in 1999 (had an impressive match with Mysterio that made it onto his DVD set) and if he stayed in the business had the potention of being the second coming of Rey Mysterio as this wrestler was incredibly quick. Him & Juventud gave one of the most underrated opening matches in the companies history as the match looked like someone pressed the fast foward button as this was just (no pun intended) total nonstop action with sick spots. Hardcore Match: Hak vs. Bam Bam Bigelow - Again, for those who can't remember...Hak was the WCW name for ECW's Sandman. This was a hardcore weapons/spot fest as this used "everything but the kitchen sink" here. A salad bowl, trash cans, tables, mops, ladders, a safety rail, and Hak even doing a sommersault off the stagecoach on the entrance way. Bigelow got the win & kept the unofficial title of "King Of Hardcore" with the Greetings From Asbury Park off the top rope through a table. Scotty Riggs vs. Mikey Whipwreck - Just a boring filler, skip it. Konnan vs. Disco Inferno - It was watchable but nothing past that. WCW Crusierweight Champion Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Billy Kidman - Once again for those who don't remember, this was around the time that Mysterio was unmasked (which according to WWE never happened but that's another story). Unlike the previous crusierweight match, this was less of a spotfest and more of a mixture of high flyin' along with good wrestling. If this wasn't during the period where Mysterio was without his mask, this match would get more credit than it deserves. Raven & Saturn vs. Chris Benoit & Dean Malenko - Three of the future "radicalz" & another wrestler who jumped ship 4 months earlier before they could delivered quite the tag team match here with a great mix of wrestling along with the "Raven's Rules" coming into play at times with a chair getting involved. These men did what they did best & deliver a damn good match. WCW United States Championship Match: Booker T vs. Scott Steiner - This was the tournament final for the vacant U.S. Championship (which was last held by Scott Hall) & also a rematch from their Television Championship match last month. Overall, it was a nice but not outstanding back & forth match but the moments before it heavily showcased why Scott Steiner was a heat magnet in WCW during that time. Goldberg vs. Kevin Nash - This was really just there for Goldberg to get his win back from Kevin Nash & nothing special past that fact as this didn't come close to their previous Starrcade encounter. WCW Champion Ric Flair vs. Diamond Dallas Page vs. Hollywood Hogan vs. Sting with Randy Savage as Special Guest Referee - This match marked the return of Sting since last October & Randy Savage's return (minus a cameo appearence last Dec.) since July of last year. This was a four way dance where the first one to get the pin/submission would become the WCW Champion. It ended up turning into a 3 way dance when DDP injured Hogan's leg which lead to Eric Bischoff (the first time you saw him in weeks) coming out to help Hogan back. The match was fun to watch between all three men with Randy Savage playing his card in dropping the elbow on Ric Flair helping DDP finally win the WCW Championship. In the end, there were a few minor flops but those matches didn't last long & the wrestling quality here here weather your a fan of technical wrestling, hardcore wrestling, or high flyin' crusierweight action. In the end, this is a quality WCW PPV that I would recommend checking out.

One of the best ppvs ever. Blitzkreig vs juventud guerrera, kidman vs rey mysterio,jr,Sting vs DDP vs Ric Flair vs Hollywood Hulk Hogan were the best matches.Don't want to tell you who won but someone really got injured in the four corners match. I wish he could have been there for the whole match. I used to watch wrestling all the time when I was a kid. I just got interested in it again a little while ago. I am a big WCW fan. Here are the matches.
Blitzkreig vs juventud guerrera Bam Bam Bigelow vs Hak Konnan vs Disco Inferno Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko vs Raven and Saturn Mikey Whipwreck vs Scotty Riggs Scott Steiner vs Booker T Rey Mysterio vs Kidman Goldberg vs Kevin Nash Sting vs DDP vs Ric Flair vs Hollywod Hulk Hogan w/special referee Macho Man This is probably not in order but these are the matches.Pick this up if you are a wcw fan. You'll love it.

Jueventud Guerrera VS Blitzkrieg: Alot of people loved this match. I heard a couple say it was match of the year. It was a good match with a missed spots. I liked the ending.
Side note: Mike, Bobby, and Tony didnt really care at this PPV. I found it funny when they said something about Thunder being on and Tony and Bobby said they didnt know. All thru the night there is alot of inside jokes within the commentary. Shows you what shape WCW was in at the time. Bam Bam VS Hak: I use to love hardcore wrestling but now I could careless for the matches. Most of them come off as sloppy with a few spots that stick out. This was one of those matches. A few good spots but very sloppy. Scott Riggs VS Mikey Whipwreck: Anther ECW castoff in WCW. I cant remember what happens, let alone care. Oh yea, I think Riggs won it. Konnan VS Disco: Two wrestlers I couldnt care about. No, Konnan is not in TNA anymore. Rey Mysterio Jr VS Billy Kidman: Awesome match. It is weird seeing Mysterio without his mask on. These two always could put on the best matchs. Beniot and Malenko VS Raven and Saturn: Four of the best wrestlers in WCW at the time. I really liked Malenko and Beniot as a tag team. A excellent match and I loved the ending. Scott Steiner VS Booker T: These two had a great feud in WCW during its final years. Steiner is suppose to be this monster that everyone in WCW was afraid of and apparently at the time, it worked. I did like the ending though. Nash VS Goldberg: Goldberg went from a monster who could not be beaten to anther face in the crowd. Nash uses his basic moves to start off and it was some of the worst shots ever taken by a wrestler. If you cant tell they were fake, then you got a problem. Goldberg makes a comeback after being beaten half to death and wins it. A crappy match to some but I liked it somewhat. DDP VS Flair VS Sting VS Hogan with Savage as the guest ref: Sounds like a star studded event. The problem with the match is like any other fatal four way or matches with more then three people, you lose track of whats going on. I was surprised to see Hogan leave during the match and Eric coming out to check on him. After Hogan leaves, the match gets a little better to follow. Savage attacks Flair but nothing came out of it. Seems pointless now I think of it. I always loved how DDP pulled the diamond cutter out of nowheres. A good card with a few bad matches. The main event was good but I would not call it a classic. |
