3.0 out of 5 stars The Return Of Spring Stampede, January 13, 2010
This review is from: WCW Spring Stampede 97 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Once again, thanks to WWE Classics On Demand, I was able to relive another event from WCW. This was the first Spring Stampede event since the original 1994 edition with the highlight being the beginning of one of the best feuds in WCW. However, one thing to take into consideration is that since I saw this event on WWE On Demand & not the VHS version, they decided to remove the United States Championship match involving Dean Malenko & Chris Benoit which is still a damn shame but anyways here is the rest of the card:

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs Ultimo Dragon. 9 times out of 10 when you have the cruiserweight division kicking off the show, you are in for a treat & this was no exception. Dragon was working a much more stiffer style than what we are used to seeing as these two went at it fast paced throughout the match with both men trading aerial offense at one point in time. Awesome opener & a great way to start the show.

WCW Women's Champion Akiro Hokuto vs Madusa. Well, this was better than their Starrcade match due to the fact that Madusa actually got more offense in here than she did in their previous match but the ending was really weak with Luna coming in & literally kicking Madusa in the leg for Hokuto to get the win.

WCW Television Champion Prince Iaukea vs Lord Steven Regal. This was a rematch due to Iaukea winning the title from Regal a couple weeks before on Nitro. Regal's stiff mat-wrestling meshed well with Iaukea's cruiserweight offense in what was a good competitive match between the two.

Right around here, was the announcement that Ric Flair would be returning at the next PPV event with the Horsemen & Kevin Greene to battle the nWo.

The Public Enemy vs Jeff Jarrett & Steve McMichael. Just an average tag team match that was nothing special past the beginning of tension between Jarrett & McMichael that would lead to their feud later on in the year.

WCW Tag Team Champion Kevin Nash vs Rick Steiner. Now the whole storyline here was that Scott Hall had no-showed this event (which was never explained) while at the same time, earlier in the night, Scott Steiner had gotten arrested due to an altercation with one of the security guards which lead to this singles match for the tag team titles along with Nick Patrick being the guest referee & Ted Dibiase & Syxx being at ringside. The bigger issue was the continuation of problems within the nWo as at one point during the match, Syxx removed the turnbuckle cover allowing Nash to repeatedly drop Steiner into the exposed buckle to the point where Dibiase left in disgust & Patrick even hesitated to make the three count.

Four Corners Match: Lex Luger vs The Giant vs Booker T vs Stevie Ray. Originally, this was supposed to be a tag team match but Eric Bischoff had this match changed to a four corners match with the winner receiving a title shot at WCW Champion Hollywood Hulk Hogan. This match told a good story as each person tried to stay committed to their partner while at the same time, selling the fact how much that they want that title to the point where we even saw Booker & Stevie face each other but it was one specific partner who sacrificed himself for his partner to get the title shot that made the difference in the end.

No Disqualification Match: Randy Savage vs Diamond Dallas Page. One thing to mention before the match started is to listen to Savage's antics when he is on his way to the ring that was really entertaining & funny. I felt that this was Savage's best feud in WCW as he helped elevate DDP into becoming a main event star & it all started here in what was a wild brawl with both men being aggressive throughout, fighting in the crowd at one point, both men using steel chairs, Savage attacking the ring announcers & the referee to use his belt along with attempting to use the ringbell. However, the bigger story was the appearance of Nick Patrick & what he did that lead to more problems within the nWo to the point where Savage & Eric Bischoff almost came to blows.

Overall, the only setbacks here was the whole Tag Team Title match situation & the Benoit/Malenko match being removed but overall, this was a pretty good show from WCW with the opener & the main event being the highlights to this show. But don't worry, the Malenko/Benoit is not removed from the tape if that helps.
