There's one more match to go through before getting to the good stuff.

Outsiders vs Faces of Fear for the WCW Tag titles: On paper I thought this match was going to suck but in reality it wasn't too bad.

WCW's Starrcade 97 should have been WCW's shining moment, the night when WCW took back control of the sport from Hollywood Hulk Hogan and the goons of the NWO, but the climax of the match eighteen months in the making - the return of the dark and mysterious Sting to face Hogan for the world's heavyweight championship - is in many ways a tragedy that disappointed and almost ruined my entire viewing experience. Overall, though, the night's events are pretty exciting and unpredictable, with three major titles on the line and control of the Monday Nitro telecast up for grabs, making this a worthwhile tape to own despite rather than because of the Sting-Hogan match.
Starrcade 97 shows unexpected weakness early on, as Bobby the Brain Heenan is a no-show, leaving us with an announcing crew made up of Tony Schiavone, the American Dream Dusty Rhodes, and Mike Tenay. Kevin Nash, it is announced, will also not be there to face the Giant. The first match, though, is a good one. Dean Malenko tries to regain the cruiserweight belt from Eddy Guerrero, and despite the fact I always hated Guerrero, he was pretty impressive in the ring on this night. After this first match, the NWO's Scott Hall comes out to do his little survey of WCW vs NWO fans in the audience and to let everyone know that Kevin Nash will not be there to fight the Giant. We do get a little satisfaction from this turn of events, though, when the Giant comes out and basically leaves Scott Hall lying unconscious in the middle of the ring. Next up is a six-man tag team match: WCW tag team champions Scott and Rick Steiner team up with Ray Traylor take on the NWO's Scott Norton, Vincent, and Konan - except Konan isn't there, and Randy Macho Man Savage takes his place.

Even though it says Starrcade 1997, this is actually a review for Starrcade 1996 because that's when Piper and Hogan went at it at Starrcade. Here's the match listing:

Ultimo Dragon vs Dean Malenko for the WCW Cruiserweight title: Boy what a great way to start the PPV with this classic between two of the best in the world at that time. Dragon actually came in with 8 other Cruiserweight and Junior Heavyweight titles that he won at the 1996 Super J Crown Tournament. This was a very good wrestling match with ariel manevers thrown in for good measure. All in all this may have been the match of the night. I give this match a 10/10.

Madusa vs Akira Hokuto for the new WCW Women's title: This was a good match between two of the best women wrestlers of that era. It wasn't too short and it wasn't too long, just a nice paced match from start to finish. I give this match a 7/10.

Rey Mysterio vs Jushin Liger: This was dream match for many fans of wrestling and it did not disappoint. This match could also claim to be match of the night as they attempted to steal the show and may have just done that. This match was awesome and well worth the purchase of this PPV alone. I give this match 10/10.

Chris Benoit vs Jeff Jarrett: This was a good match but I didn't like the fact that Jarrett won. Him winning just ruined the whole match for me. I give this match a 7/10.

Outsiders vs Faces of Fear for the WCW Tag titles: On paper I thought this match was going to suck but in reality it wasn't too bad. I knew with Hall and Nash's power within the company that Meng and Barbarian wasn't going to win but it was still a fun and enjoyable match to watch.

This was a very good Starrcade with a very good card. The main event was over-rated, but was still very good. I don't remember a whole lot about the undercard, but I do remember being better than expected. One match I do remember was The Giant vs. Kevin Nash in a giant vs. giant match. Sting vs. Hollywood Hogan was pretty good, considering the amount of wrestling ability Hogan has. Sting really carried this match, but the one thing that stunk up this match was Bret Hart's silly interference in which he restarted the match and let Hogan's mostly clean "win" slip away from the Biggest Icon in Sports. All in all, this is a good event which could have standed a few changes. This video is recommended.

You know that little footnote you see at the bottom of the screen whenever there is a PPV advertisement that says "CARD SUBJECT TO CHANGE? Well this PPV is a perfect example of what that footnote means because of most of the card & PPV format was changed as WCW saved some of their advertised matches for the Souled Out PPV the next month. To continue a storyline that happened on the previous Nitro, Bobby Heenan didn't do the color commentary for the PPV as it was the team of Tenay, Tony, and Dusty. Last but not least, the advertised match between Kevin Nash vs. Giant was cancelled because Kevin Nash no-showed (which was never explained why). This would have been possibly one of the best WCW shows of all time but they dropped the ball by not delivering what they advertised & hyped up for weeks. Plus the long awaited Hogan vs. Sting match left a bad taste in everyone's mouth (and that's put it lightly).

Crusierweight Champion Eddie Guerrero vs. Dean Malenko - This was very similar to their series in ECW and a great way to begin the program with their mat wrestling.

In order for WCW to save face for Nash's no show, Scott Hall came out to talk to the crowd before Giant showed up & left him lying with Kevin Nash's "Jackknife" powerbomb. The Nash/Giant match would happen at Souled Out the next month.

Steiner Brothers & Ray Traylor [WCW] vs. Randy Savage, Vincent, Scott Norton [nWo] - Randy Savage replaced Konnan and this was a good match for what it was but it's nothing special here. The six-man tag with Konnan would end up taking place the next month at Souled Out.

Steve "Mongo" McMichael vs.
