4.0 out of 5 stars Starrcade is WCW's "Wrestlemania!", April 16, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: WCW Starrcade 1999 - Battle to End Millenium [VHS] (VHS Tape)
WCW has always tried to build Starrcade as the biggest event of the year. When Vince Russo threw his twist into the mix, the result was surprising. It was sad to see so many of the matches end in a screwjob of sorts, but it was a true breath of fresh air to see Benoit face Jeff Jarrett in a ladder match for the WCW United States Championship. That was probably the highlight of the evening, although some of the other matches were good too.

Kevin Nash vs. Sid Vicious in a powerbomb match was definitely a good match, which ended creatively, if that would be the way to put it.

The main event was probably what many would consider a dream match: Goldberg vs. Bret Hart in a no DQ match. Both men are probably the most deserving wrestlers at the top of WCW's card, so it was good to see a match of Wrestlemania proportions. This is the match where Hart got kicked in the head so hard, he was out of the game for months.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Last Two Matches Save This Card!, June 11, 2008
By
This review is from: WCW Starrcade 1999 - Battle to End Millenium [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Starrcade '99 was a mixed bag as a wrestling card. Some of it was entertaining, some of it was okay. One match was plain bad and the final two bouts is the reason why I gave this card 4 stars! Let's get to it:

Big Vito and Johnny the Bull Vs. Disco Inferno and Lash Leroux - This actually wasn't a bad opener. The story behind it sucked but the match itself was pretty good. Ends when Disco accidentally gives Lash "The Last Dance" (Stone Cold Stunner), allowing Big Vito to get the pin on Lash!

Madusa Vs. Evan Karagious (WCW Cruiserweight Title Match) - In a rare man Vs. woman theme (and in trying to keep up with what WWE/WWF was doing at the time with Joanie Laurer aka Chyna), veteran women wrestler Madusa took on Evan for the Cruiserweight title. Quite frankly, this was a mismatch as Madusa was far more talented than this pretty boy! LOL! Ends when Nitro Girl Spice double-crosses Evan and helps Madusa win the Cruiserweight title!

Norman Smiley Vs. Meng (Haku) - This was for WCW's version of the Hardcore Championship. Quite frankly, Norman (who was the champion) spent most of the bout running from Meng and getting his tail kicked! Ends when Fit Finley and "Nasty Boy" Brian Knobbs gets involved and knocks Meng out, allowing Norman to get the pin.

The Revolution (Shane Douglas, Perry Saturn, Dean Malenko & Asya) Vs. "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan & The Varsity Club (Mike Rotundo, Rick Steiner & Kevin Sullivan) - This eight man tag is really more like a 4 on 3 as Shane doesn't even get involved until the very end. Duggan mostly fights on his own without using his partners. At the end, T.V.C. gets into the match and attack everyone including Duggan! Ends when Douglas gets a cheap pin on the "Hacksaw" for the win.

Vampiro Vs. "Dr. Death" Steve Williams - Per pre-match stipulation, Vampiro would get 5 minutes with Oklahoma (Williams' manager) if he won. After a pretty stiff contest, Vampiro wins by DQ. However, he is surpringly on the receiving end of Oklahoma for the first couple of minutes. Once Vampiro takes over though, its all over as even his friends The Misfits gets involved too. Vampiro wins this one fairly easily.

Curt Hennig (RIP) & Creative Control Vs. Harlem Heat & Midnight - This six-man tag was really a 2 on 3 affair as Stevie Ray bowed out of the match before it started! The late, great "Mr. Perfect" along with C.C. easily takes this one.

Dustin Rhodes Vs. Jeff Jarrett (Bunkhouse Brawl) - This one wasn't too bad as both took some decent shots. Ends when Jarrett comes off of a ladder on Dustin with his guitar after a distraction from Curt Hennig.

Diamond Dallas Page Vs. David Flair (Crowbar On A Pole Match) - David actually shows some smarts by attacking DDP before the match with his own crowbar and nearly gets a countout win! David works over DDP's ribs and legs and even uses his father's figure four leglock to try to get the win! In the end, David gets the crowbar off the pole but before he gets to use it DDP slips in his "Diamond Cutter" for a quick pin!

Sting Vs. Lex Luger - Sting wins this slow match by DQ when Elizabeth (who was supposed to be managing Sting) double crosses him and clocks him in the face with his own baseball bat while he had Luger in his Scorpion Deathlock!

Kevin Nash Vs. Sid Vicious (Master Of The Powerbomb Match) - Very slow bout but what could you expect from these two?! Ends when Jeff Jarrett smashes Sid with his guitar and Nash convinces the ref that he powerbombed Sid when he never even did the move! Nash takes a very cheap win!

Chris Benoit Vs. Jeff Jarrett (WCW U.S. Title Ladder Match) - This match stems from earlier in the card when Benoit was awarded the U.S. title because Scott Hall no showed for the match. Benoit then issued an open challenge to anyone wanting to face him in a ladder match for the belt. Jarrett answered and what we got was a classic matchup! Benoit wins after he does his dangerous flying headbutt from the top of the ladder onto Jarrett before claiming the U.S. belt.

As I have said many times, its too bad Benoit committed that murder/suicide. The sadness really is compounded when you see a match like this! Kudos to Jarrett too as he gave a great effort as well.

Bret "The Hitman" Hart Vs. Goldberg (WCW World Title Match/No DQ) - This was actually very good bout. Hart made "Da' Man" look very good! Sadly, this would be Bret's last PPV match as Goldberg's sidekick nails him in the head for real and gives him a concussion that effectively ends his in-ring career.

On the match itself, Bret wins the match even though Goldberg never actually submitted in his Sharpshooter!

The final two matches make this whole card for me! I'd find it for $20 or under!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great PPV, November 1, 2002

This is a terrific PPV by wcw. Most of the matches were good and fast paced and not boring. This event also features the best rated match of 1999, and also one of the most controversial endings to a main event ever!
The best matches were:
- Big Vito/Johnny the Bull V Disco Inferno/Lash Leroux
- Jeff Jarret V Dustin Rhodes (Bunkhouse Brawl)
- DDP v David Flair (Crowbar on a poll match)
- Sting V Lex Luger
- Benoit v Jeff Jarret (US title ladder match)*match of the year*
- Goldberg V Bret Hart (world title no disqualification match)

Unfortunately, the 1997 Survivor Series rehash is not the only dodgy screw-job on the show. Starrcade is stuffed with them. Take my advice, leave this one well alone.

This was a great ppv The first match was great it had the mamalukes facing off to lash ans disco. The powerbomb match was good but the ending was suprising The best match by far was the ladder match with chris benoit and jarrett I think it would have ben better with scott hall but it was very entertaning that was a historic match between to of the best in the wcw The revolution vs the varsity club was great match. The final match was bill golberg vs bret hart it was a great match bret hart could have proved that he was the best there is the best there was and there ever will be. The end of that match wasa not like I expected the odd refferie made a stupid decision because he was a stupid man. All in all this was the best pay per view of the year it might have ben one of the best in history if that stupid man dressed as a refferie would have not came out and made a stupind decision If you dont own this you should but it or rent it is a great ppv Starrcade

chris benoit vs jeff jarret ladder match

a very good ladder match i enjoy the bumps both men took especially benoit who was bleeding at the end of the match because of all the punishment he suffered throughout the match from jarret who is not a bad wrestler in the ring i just wish he could work harder in all of his big match like he did in this one and his famous match against hbk in 95 that many people say is one of the best matches of all time this match is not on the level as the match of the year tag team ladder match between edge and christan vs the hardys nor is it on the level with chris benoit other ladder match against chris jericho i felt something was missing in this fast pace exciting ladder match that i would have love to have given a higher rating but simplier could not maybe if the match was a few mintues longer may be that what it might have been that the match was it long enough therefore something that the ladder match was missing was not having enough time do not get me wrong this is still a very good to great ladder battle i rated this match as ***3/4-**** due to the hardwork of both wrestlers including a couple of creative spots in the mix joe black i am back

This review is from: WCW Starrcade 1999 - Battle to End Millenium [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I LIKED STARRCADE ALOT. THE REASON I ORDERED IT WAS BECAUSE DUSTIN RHODES WAS ON IT. I HAVE ALWAY,S BEEN A BIG FAN OF DUSTIN,S. I,M GLAD HE CAME BACK TO WCW. EVEN IF IT WAS FOR A SHORT WHILE. THAT GIIMMIC THEY TRIED TO PUT ON HIM WAS STUPID. NO WONDER HE WAS MAD AT JEFF JERRAT. SINCERELY DUSTIN RHODES FAN. KATHY ALIFF.
