Size Name: 4 Tb Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
For this review, I am comparing 4 NAS I personally use:

1. This WD My Cloud EX2 4TB
2. Synology DiskStation 2-Bay (Diskless) Network Attached Storage (DS213j)
3. NETGEAR ReadyNAS 100 Series 102 4TB (2 x 2TB) 2-Bay Network Attached Storage (RN10222D-100NAS)
4. Buffalo LinkStation 420 4 TB 2-Drive 2 x 2 TB High Performance NAS Personal Cloud Storage and Media Server (LS420D0402)

The Western Digital My Cloud EX 2 I was shipped sports a pair of WD Red NAS drives. TheNetgear ReadyNAS came with a pair of Toshiba DT01ACA100 drives - 7,200 RPM drives Toshiba touts as being engineered for high performance and low power for cooler operation. I installed in my Synology Diskstation DS-213j two Seagate NAS drives (ST3000VN000). My Buffalo LinkStation also shipped with a pair of TOSHIBA DT01ACA100 32MB Cache SATA 6.0Gb/s Drives. As for price, the WD, Netgear and Synology are within a few bucks of each other if you buy them diskless. The Buffalo is by far the cheapest - as it should be.

HARDWARE COMPARISON:

As for processors and memory, they all have 1.2 GHz processors and 512 MB DDR3 RAM. They use different chip manufacturers (ARM, Marvel etc.) but for home use I did not notice any significant speed differences that would make me want to choose one over the other.

In all other hardware aspects Netgear leads the pack. The ReadyNAS sports two USB 3.0 ports and one USB 2.

Size Name: 4 Tb Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I've owned a large number of Western Digital network devices. A pair of network RAIDs serve as my small company backup system. A pair of their TV Live settop boxes have supported my in-home streaming for a while. After one of my old MyCloud drives bit the dust (it happens) I set up a NAS from another company. It worked, but was always a little clunky. This new drive means I can get my home system back onto WD.

This is my first experience with the EX2 series, and it's only taken a few days to appreciate how much WD has added. I should say at the outset that a device like this is not for a network beginner, no matter how strongly it might be pitched in that direction. Still, it's simple to manage if you're over the threshold of basic network knowledge. There's the potential for confusion at the outset: the first thing you see is a MyCloud application. It gives you file access to the device, but that's not where the action is. You'll need to log into the browser interface. First you'll need to find the IP address of the device (I just look at the DHCP log of my router) and type that address into your browser. That will give you full access to the device and its many capabilities.

The browser interface is clean and informative. The home page shows basic device status (a nice live graph of network, cpu and disk usage) and presents other pages for setup and utilities. The drive is quite configurable and you can easily change the RAID model, add AFP/Samba support, iSCSI, VLAN. You can change the IP address to a fixed value (my usual approach with a very large home network). DLNA users (that's me) will be happy to see that the Twonky software package is built-in. That's the cleanest and most powerful DLNA server and is an extra-cost item on many other servers.

It's been over 3 weeks. I am not a big technical person like other reviewers. The cloud drive is certainly very fast and easy to transfer file and setups. While within the home network, it works really good. There's a free trial on the Smartware for backups but I upgraded to full version. The only disappointment with software is not able to do multiple different backups to the drive. The music streaming is ok. I wish there is a better music library built in to retrieve the music easier. The mobile apps works really fast and able to retrieve files easily. I wish it is similar to POGOPLUG where it builds the media library for you (photo, music and video) instead of going into each files to retrieve music.
The "wd2go.com" is pathetic and useless. I have called the technical support 3-4 times and not really able to help. The last one says something had to do with the JAVA software. I have done what the technical support asked and no result. The main reason I purchased this is that I can access files from a public desktop or office desktop computer without having to install any WD Desktop access software. Totally disappointed.
As far as for home network, it a great network drive. It's a great backup and NAS drive. As soon as you want to access from remote, I am very disappointed.

Update: It's been less than a year and the second drive failed already.
Update: It's so hard to get RMA for returns. I am still in a process on getting an exchange for the failed second drive.

I have 2 WD duo's for use at a non-profit. No problems thus far. They needed SMB2 so I wasn't sure the EX 2 would work. Bought an EX 2 for home and found I can configure SMB for 1, 2 or 3.

Unlike the WD duo, the EX 2 can be easily set to include a recycle bin. Big improvement on the dashboard interface. Also has twonky server which works far better than the media server on the duo.

Attached a USB drive and backed up 59 MB of data in just a few minutes (for the non profit, we also keep a backup in another building). So much faster than any other means we have tried. Will be buying an EX 2 for the non-profit as well.

Only negative so far is the auto-update of the OS which is flashed. I will leave mine off and check the WD EX2 forum first to see if there are problems. I had no problem with the first, but others did.
