4.0 out of 5 stars Well Written Humour
I bought this book from not knowing a thing about it or what to expect!
This book is very well written, entertaining and crammed with laughter from start to finish.
A totally irreverant but gentle poke in the eye at the old Irish catholic way of life, even the modern ones could learn a thing or two! I just couldn't put it down.
This book is a must for...

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time
I love funny books. This book is not funny. I ordered it based on a review claiming it was the "funniest book ever". It is just a satire of this man's life. I had hoped for humor along the lines of Angela's Ashes - funny instances of real life. This was ridiculous imaginings of this man's life. I painfully worked my way through the first chapter of the book, hoping it...

This book is a must for anyone who's ever told or heard an Irish joke.
Wether you want an insight into Irish politics, religion or just to brush up on your 'one liners' this is a book for you.
A veritable treat of knowledge and laughter!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most I have ever laughed at a book., April 12, 2011
By
Tommy D "Tom" (London, England) - See all my reviews
I read this when it came out and recently read it again whilst travelling back from Spain (I wasn't driving!). I laughed so much that people started asking me what was wrong. To put this into context I hardly ever laugh at 'comedies' books etc, this however hit me continually throughout.

It is the invented memoirs of Eoin O'Cealligh. Like Father Ted it does help if you know a bit about Irish Catholicism, but friends who have borrowed this did not feel this to be a barrier. One of the reviewers has said that it is a one trick pony with the same joke being retold, I very much beg to differ, there is a full treatment of Irish politics, the relentless and quite pointless poetry and the ever apparent curiosity and fear of anything to do with the filthy business of sex. Everyone concerned have fantastical names with more vowels than is feasibly necessary as is the case with Irish names. It even has a pictorial section for added fake authenticity. I had to stop reading it at one point because I was making a spectacle of myself, but have probably helped sell a few more copies, I can not think of a better read (but not at a Christening or some such occasion - my mistake).
