Lobstrosities on the rampage!,
By Jim Lay (Knoxville, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wells of Hell (Paperback)
Nobody does horror better than Graham Masterton. The more of his work I read, the more I become convinced of that. And even when the subject matter is unapologetically outrageous-- as it is in the case of THE WELLS OF HELL-- Masterton manages to pull it off with genuine terror and a nudge and a wink of black humor in the process... A small town in Conneticut finds an ancient evil beneath the ground. A living entity with power over water and an infectious mutation that turns people into crustaceous monsters... Masterton has fun with the idea and supports it with a credible backstory and history of ancient curses and Lovecraftian gods. Great fun, good horror, and another jewel from one of the most incredible imaginations and brilliant storytellers in horror fiction. Masterton NEVER disappoints.

Masterton's love letter to "The Color Out of Space",
By
This review is from: The Wells of Hell (Paperback)
Funny tasting water from a contaminated well leads to a terrifying battle between good and evil in Graham Masterton's loving tribute to Lovecraft's classic tale of alien contamination, "The Color Out of Space." When a family is turned into lobsterlike critters, a heroic plumber and his feisty female friend must journey to another world to save ours from an evil intrusion. Masterton sprinkles the gruesome violence and erotic tension with just enough humor to make it go down smooth. Highly recommended.

Dark, wet, scary, with a lingering stench of rotting fish.,
This review is from: The Wells of Hell (Paperback)
I'm a great fan of Masterton's work and this book was one I really enjoyed. In this book he creates a dark, wet small town, where ancient Evils lurk in underground lakes. The heroes battle against powerful enemies who seem to come straight from Hell (and Lovecraft's imagination) and a cat named Shelley leads the way to the final confrontation. Dark, wet, scary, with a lingering stench of rotting fish. A great horror book.

looks like craaab, talks like peeeeoopple.....ok I got that out of my system. Someone had to do it. I picked this book up at the used book store because of 2 reasons. 1. I've always heard good things about Graham Masterton and 2. The cover was just so freakin cool. I love that old school "chiller" font look with horror. Its just so fun to me. I had no idea what I was getting into here, just that the water in these wells was turning people into monsters. Little did I know I was getting into Cthulhu mythology. I love campy and over the top and funny in certain situations if its done right, but with Cthulhu (different names in this book) I'm glad Masterton went with scary here. Cthulhu is something thats supposed to be epic, and genuinely scare you. He could have easily went over the top and campy here with his crab monsters. Like somethin straight out of power rangers, but he didn't. He made them as scary as he possibly could and I enjoyed that about this book. The only reason I took away a star was for the crappy ending. Its not a horrible ending, just one of those "really, are you serious?" kind if endings. But oh well, still a good book and something that should deffinatly be checked out.

Enjoyable,

A nice, snappy little horror novel that moves along at a quick pace. The elements come together to make a pretty absorbing read for a rainy day. Dank underground caves, people transformed into hideous monsters, behemoth bloodthirsty crab creatures, and infectious paranoia. The limits of believability are stretched a bit in some parts, but that's okay if you can suspend disbelief and just go with the story. I found myself swept away as if on an icy underground current, for a few hours anyway.

With a evil as old as the world itself, this small town, unbeknowist to them, has sonething living under the ground. It is changing the people of this town to monstrosities beyond human. This is one of his older books and it is well written but the ending and seemingly rush-to-finish the book was the only downfall. Other than that, the story line and gore was the same. He still is the MASTER of horror.

In the Vain of Lovecraft, Masterson shines in brilliance.,

This book is great, for everything. Story, characters. It is a great read that actually makes you look around the room as you read it. What makes this book so good, is that the ending is so unfathomable, dark and original...it leaves one almost speechless. The ending makes this book. Read it.

This book is an excellent read. Masterson is a talented writer, and has the ability to put you right there, in the book. The wells of hell is very realistic. In fact, it's so realistic I was looking over my shoulder to make sure there wasn't someone there. This book has strong characters, and an incredibly addicting story line. This is a must read. Enjoy!

You cannot put down this book because it literally sucks you into it the way MASTERTON tells it. I thought it was great and though I did not favor the ending I do recommend this book to a true MASTERTON fan.
