40-Volt MAX Lithium Cordless Grass Trimmer/Edger

Put the professional finishing touches on your lawn with the Worx WG168 cordless grass trimmer/edger. The 40-volt cordless lithium-power battery provides gas-like power, run-time, and performance with less weight and zero emissions. With the three-speed variable control; the 13-inch cutting diameter; and the rotating head for edging, this 40-volt trimmer/edger is loaded with the power you need and the precision control to create a professionally landscaped lawn anytime.

Efficient, Battery Power

The WG168 is powered by a lightweight and efficient 40-volt 2.0 Ah rechargeable LithiumMAX battery, which delivers plenty of power without the added cost of gas, hassle of extension cords, or smelly emissions associated with gas-powered alternatives. Not only are Worx LithiumMAX battery packs extremely lightweight, they provide three times the usable life of standard Ni-CD batteries.

The included quick charger will charge the battery in an hour, which means less downtime between charges. With no memory effect, the battery can charge anytime and have power until ready to use. With the LithiumMAX battery, on low speed setting, you can trim and edge your lawn under normal use and conditions up to 27 minutes per full charge. The higher the speed setting and the tougher the conditions, the trimmer will use more runtime. The lower the speed setting and easier grass conditions, the more runtime can be expected.

Gas-like Design with Maximum Comfort

The WG168 40-volt cordless trimmer/edger has the look and feel of a gas trimmer but is much lighter and easier to maneuver. At less than 8 pounds, the WG168 is easier to lug around without the hassle of carrying the gas can, tangled cords, or smelly emissions. With the pivoting head and pull-out edger guide, now the trimmer becomes an inverted edger just like other gas trimmers. The edger guide can also be extended to protect ornamental vegetation when trimming.

The WG168 comes with a trimmer line spool installed. Made of a patented co-polymer blend that's flexible and pliable when striking surfaces, this allows for more durability and longer trimmer-line life. The 0.08 line diameter and 20-feet of line gives you plenty to work with compared to other smaller lines on other cordless trimmers. The single, automatic line feed also means no bumping to extend the line. To change the spool (WA0014), simply remove the tool-free cap and insert the single line into the feeder hole. The process requires virtually no downtime.

Battery lasts a very long time.

Though you can move the handle to adjust the balance, the shaft length is fixed and it is just too long to be really comfortable for me.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
EDIT::: After more extensive use, I'd like to add the following
1. I had the dang metal guide on upside down. Once I'd switched it, it flips up and down no problemo. 2. If you use the trimmer on HIGH to get through particularly tough weeds, the battery life is SIGNIFICANTLY diminished. If you consistently have large areas to edge, you might want to go with a gas model. For the average homeowner who keeps up on their yard, it will not be an issue.

My trimmer experience ranges from an old school corded weed eater, a first generation Worx NiCad battery trimmer, a Toro Lithium battery trimmer and this Worx Lithium trimmer. Each had been an improvement from the last. Firstly, battery edgers are greatly preferable to hauling around an extension cord for an electric trimmer or the noise and fume pollution of a gas trimmer. The trick is to find a battery trimmer with sufficient power and runtime to suit your needs.

I didn't think I'd ever want a Worx edger after my my first experience with the original Worx GT. It was gutless and the NiCad battery would give out before I finished half my yard. I upgraded to a Toro 51486 with a 24 volt Lithium battery, 12 inch cutting width, weighing in at 8 pounds and it has always had enough oomph to edge my entire lawn before running out of juice. As a 5'6" female I appreciate it's height adjustable shaft and wheel guided edger.

Then I was offered a chance to test the new Worx WG168. Pretty excited to see if they've improved from their earlier model.

It took some time to assemble. The directions don't do a good job of showing how the handle goes on and I was convinced I'd been given the wrong part until I realized I had it upside down.

I've used a lot of trimmers over the years and read all of the reviews here before opting to try my second electric unit. The bottom line is that this could have a near perfect trimmer, but it suffers from two fatal flaws that caused me to return mine. First the good news: I was pleasantly surprised that for an electric, it really did have ample power and near gas quality. I really liked how quiet it was and how easy it was to operate, no gas to buy or fill - great. Its lightweight which makes it really easy to handle and to direct the cutting head where you want it to go. A real issue with heavier trimmers that can be exhausting to use. Now the fatal flaws, which Worx should be able to remedy.

Problem Number One is that the shaft arrives in two pieces. They are supposed to "click" together permanently and the same with the handle. Problem is these critical components are made of cheap plastic. On my unit, the plastic tab that holds the two shaft pieces together fell off and into the shaft and there is no way to keep the two parts together. It just boggles the mind that they didn't make this metal or require a screw to hold these together. The handle can theoretically be adjusted by tightening the screws, but no matter how tight I made them, the handle was never tight enough and kept slipping. Again - why this could not be permanently set with a screw, I don't know. Once you have the handle where you want it, why would you adjust it? Imagine how much fun a slipping handle that is while you're working with the unit.

Now the cutting head. What is the number one frustration point with string trimmers? How to advance and keep a good cutting line. On the plus side - I like the Worx push button system. Simple easy. Jammed a few times, but that's normal on any trimmer.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I bought the Black & Decker 36volt trimmer when it first came out and I used it so much I wore out two batteries. The WORX 40volt trimmer is a great successor.

It has all the features that I wished were on my old Black & Decker;
A faster recharge: My old one would take all night to recharge, this one only needs a little over an hour.
A gauge on the battery: With a push of a button, you can see how much juice you have left. This should be standard on all rechargeable batteries.
A throttle: You have three speed settings so you are not running at max all the time. You can "throttle down" for just basic grass trimming, but "throttle up" when you come across a big weed or a tough patch.
Longer run time: This is an aspect of the throttle control, and I have got almost an hour out of this trimmer which is more than enough to trim my yard.

Now there are a couple of things that could be improved;
All rechargeable trimmer should come with two batteries! One to trim while one recharges. In fact I haven't even found where to buy an additional battery.
Needs twin cord head: All the commercial trimmers I use at work have twin cord on their heads but this one has just a single line. The head is easy to open and refill, but I just think the twin cord cuts better.
It is very light almost too light: As I am used to using commercial trimmers at work, this one is just too light. I am considering adding some weights to the head just to make it easier to handle. And speaking of the handle, it needs a O ring to attach a shoulder harness so we can have that option.

Overall this is a great trimmer and a definite improvement over previous models and is great for basic house and garden work.
