Amazon.com Review

Having been on the losing end of three Super Bowls, former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Fran Tarkenton certainly knows what it's like to be hung with the "loser" tag. But he also knows what it's like to transcend such setbacks--he ultimately parlayed his inherent talent and unrelenting dedication into a well-deserved berth in the NFL Hall of Fame. Now a high-profile businessperson and public speaker, Tarkenton offers entrepreneurs his unique and inspirational perspective on turning apparent defeat into eventual victory in What Losing Taught Me About Winning: The Ultimate Guide for Success in Small and Home-Based Businesses.

From Library Journal

What are the ingredients for successful small- and home-based businesses? Tarkenton, a Football Hall of Fame member and an entrepreneur nearly all his life, has written an inspiring and practical guide. Drawing on his own experiences and those of other entrepreneurs, Tarkenton studies such issues as start-up, financing, managing, marketing, and using the Internet to promote the business. According to the author, "I want you to learn how to think like an entrepreneur, always on full alert for signs of opportunity and methods to achieve your goals." He asserts that entrepreneurs consider failure "a natural part of the process of learning and growing and developing their ideas and their businesses." Tarkenton presents case studies of entrepreneurs who have rebounded from failure and have become even more successful. His book will find a sure readership in public libraries. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars This book is a real Loser., December 27, 1998

Fran Tarkenton couldn't have made his fortune by following the advice in this book. This book fails to provide any insights into developing a successful business. Rather this books provides a few cute folksy stories about a good old boy (Fran Tarkenton). Don't waste your money. (This review relates to the audio version.)

This review is from: WHAT LOSING TAUGHT ME ABOUT WINNING: The Ultimate Guide for Success in Small and Home-Based Businesses (Hardcover)
I must admit that I was a bit skeptical about buying and reading a book on business by one of my favorite sports figures. Boy am I glad I did! The information and insights presented by the author were a godsend to someone like me who does not have a successful mentor to show me the ropes. Fran Tarkenton explains in a most candid, clear and concise way, the little nuances that often confuse those of us who don't have much hands-on experience in running a business. Anybody trying to start a business, who does'nt read this book because it was written by an ex-football player should have his head examined..
