Interesting collection of short animation made during the cold war in Dresden,
By
This review is from: WHISPER & SHOUT! (DVD)
This DVD consists of about 16 short films (most about three minutes in length) made in Dresden, Germany before the Berlin Wall was demolished. A good portion is by the same director. None of them have dialogue so subtitles are not needed. What is needed, when watching, is a mindset to realize that the folks who made these `toons were not free to speak out and used these films to make statements or express what little freedom that could. There a few that imply restriction and some that express hope for a better day. One quirk in this DVD is that the English versions of the titles either flash by for, literally, a second or less, or don't exist. Without the titles you lose the purpose of the storyline. It appears that these tiles were once there but something happened on the way to the DVD creation. Otherwise this DVD would have gained an extra star. Still to those studying "before the wall" history or those interested in Eastern European animation techniques in the 1970s and 80s, this DVD will be worth looking at. I should also point out that the Amazon picture image of the package is wrong and not what the case looks like. Steve Ramm "Anything Phonographic"
