Editorial Reviews

By the time it closed in 1992, the East German DEFA Studio for Animation Film had produced more than 800 short animation films in a wide variety of styles and techniques. Established in 1955, the studio initially produced shorts exclusively for children. During the 1970s and '80s, however, films also targeting older audiences became more common. RED CARTOONS contains 16 short animations from 8 directors that contain elements of social and political satire that would never have been allowed in live-action films. Includes: Drum Beat, Star and Flower, Loneliness, Variants, The Rescue, Seven Rights of a Viewer, Mr. Daff Is Shooting a Film, Hello, Consequence, The Solution, Belly and Soul, The Breakdown, The Full Circle, The Monument, Sunday and Island Joke.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful By Steve Ramm TOP 50 REVIEWER on January 27, 2010
This DVD consists of about 16 short films (most about three minutes in length) made in Dresden, Germany before the Berlin Wall was demolished. A good portion is by the same director. None of them have dialogue so subtitles are not needed. What is needed, when watching, is a mindset to realize that the folks who made these `toons were not free to speak out and used these films to make statements or express what little freedom that could. There a few that imply restriction and some that express hope for a better day. One quirk in this DVD is that the English versions of the titles either flash by for, literally, a second or less, or don't exist. Without the titles you lose the purpose of the storyline. It appears that these tiles were once there but something happened on the way to the DVD creation. Otherwise this DVD would have gained an extra star.

Still to those studying "before the wall" history or those interested in Eastern European animation techniques in the 1970s and 80s, this DVD will be worth looking at.

I should also point out that the Amazon picture image of the package is wrong and not what the case looks like.
