White Badge

English subtitles.

A Korean film about Korean soldiers in Vietnam. The themes are familiar: effects of war after it is over and those who fought and survived went home.

The film also shows the ripple effects and how those who fought were unable to live normal lives again. Everything they experience after the war is filtered through their memories of it. Families and relationships were never the same and eventually destroyed.

I wondered why it is called White Badge. I think maybe it is symbolic of innocence lost.

It's worth watching and a good story. A sad story. Not too many war movies made from the perspectives of Asian soldiers.

It's also not surprising that humans react the same to war regardless of country, ethnicity or ideology.

This is a Korean version of... PLATOON, was how this film was marketed when it was released (early 90's?), but it really is a grand attempt at presenting the Korean involvement in the War. At the time it made waves with A list casting, location shooting in Nam (controvercial at the time for Korea) and a huge budget for the action scenes. It is essentially a buddy film of two vets - one who has succesfully adapted to society and one who has not from them dark days in Nam. I highly recommend this piece for those who are not familiar with korean cinema, and those who are interested in seeing the Nam experience from a different perspective.

Although this one is not for entertainment. White Badge is an intriguing film that shows what happens to soldiers once they return home. War changes them and going back to a normal life and the promises they made when they left isn't so easy. For the most part there aren't any "heroes" in this film. There's no Rambo's in their platoon. Everyone is jumpy, everyone is nervous, and no one wants to get killed. They all have a purpose and a reason for being there in Vietnam and a goal or a plan waiting for them when they get back home. As the movie plays out you see how the Soldiers how the soldiers were after the war, and then as the movie progresses you see the kind of people they were before the war.

I've heard this movie referenced to "DeerHunter" and in the movie there's a scene where one of the soldiers stares at a Movie poster of "DeerHunter". Although I don't think Deer hunter or any other movie really has much to do with this film. It's reality. War changes people and there are many things soldiers have to deal with that they didn't expect. Not everyone that survives a war survives it mentally intact. Deerhunter,White Badge, and the like can probably be told by many veterans who haven't seen either of these films.

What's the greatest part about this movie is that it's from the Korean perspective. Even though it's an entirely different country the sacrifices and the emotions are the same. I really enjoyed this film because it was dark, gritty and real. Don't expect HD quality but you can expect an outstanding movie watching this. The combat scenes aren't exactly "Saving Private Ryans" but they fit the mood of the movie well. The Blackness of the night with only Shadows moving and hands and arms being seen flailing gives insight to the chaos and unexpectedness of battle.

This is a Korean war movie about their infantry stationed in Vietnam. No propaganda nor sensationalism. Reflection of what really happened during any warfare.

Good movie about the real cost of war to the people fighting it. I thought it was very realistic. Koreans obviously had the same reaction as Americans to the war.

A bit plotting and slow to develop. Different take on the Vietnam War as you see Asians other than the Vietnamese themselves fighting, dying, and living with the horror of the war much as US vets did.

the story line was hard too follow with sub titles. I felt for the star in his fighting the demons he brought back from the war. The acting was good but I had trouble watching the whole movie. worth a try if something emotional to watch.

A very good viet nam moviie, especially for my fellow American viet vets. Interesting views of why Korea, and each individual ROK trooper, went to viet nam.
