Not What I Expected from Early Versus Books, August 29, 2006
This review is from: WILD ARMS 2 OFFICIAL PERFECT GUIDE (WILD ARMS 2 OFFICIAL PERFECT GUIDE) (Paperback)
The Wild Arms 2 guide, the 12th guide produced by Versus Books in a time when Versus Books were making the best guides. The Wild Arms 2 guide isn't bad, but it's no where near the height and quality of other RPG guides out there... past and present.
The guide begins with basic training. Which is only two pages long and doesn't really cover anything in depth. No tips that aren't mentioned in your instruction manual, or anything like that. It's not like Wild Arms 2 is hard to understand, it's just that a guide shouldn't so easily assume that the gamer is instantly going to "know" the game inside out.
The walkthrough is where the guide turns into a hit or miss. It gives you puzzle solutions. Not all of them, just the harder ones. The information isn't particularly organized (it would've been nice to use the number system), but to compensate it's got detailed maps and great coverage of the basic stats of enemies. It's rather sad though that while it covers the basic stats of enemies it never mentions things like what you can steal, or what items they drop and all that extra stuff. They talk about weakness, but not really what the enemy can absorb or anything. They just tell you HP, Exp, Gold, level and weakness.
The biggest problem with the walkthrough are the boss strategies. They're absolutely terrible. They give you stats for th eboss, but for some odd reason the boss strategy is usually one paragraph that's two or three sentences long, and the first half of it usually just talks about the boss, but not how to defeat him. It's impossible to beat a boss using these strategies. You're better off just using your own. Every now and then they might tell you to use a certain attack, but for the most part, I don't like it when the strategy I'm given is: "Just keep hitting him until he dies." A two year old could've told me that. I'd have really liked to know what the boss attacks with, and how to defend against said attacks. I collect strategy guides. I've literally read thousands of them, and I've never read boss strategies this bad before.
Outside of the mundane walkthrough, however, the guide isn't so bad. They tell you every secret and how to find every guardian. They've also got a really neat worldmap that shows you where all the hidden items are and that's pretty cool. The hidden dungeons and all are covered pretty well, but even the secrets section has its drawbacks. There are hidden bosses in the game, but the guide gives absolutely NO STATEGIES TO DEFEAT THESE BOSSES! This is inexcusable, especially for an RPG guide. The secrets are covered, but they don't go that extra mile.
The guide doesn't have an items appendix... which doesn't really hurt the guide, but again, a guide should have these things. Then there's an enemies list that points out all the overworld enemies. This isn't bad, it's more or less a bestiary. It's pretty cool.
Overall this isn't a bad guide, but it's really not good. The walkthrough is somewhat dull, and the secrets, while all covered, could've gone the extra mile to give me some more indepth explanation, such as giving me boss strategies for secret bosses.
It's not bad, but it could've been a guide ten times better than it what it was.
The Good
+There's a walkthrough
+All the secrets
+No plot spoilers
The Bad
-The walkthrough is just not very well organized
-Some of the worst boss strategies I've ever read in my life
-They give stats for secret bosses, but they don't give a strategy... then again, if they had I don't think it would've made a difference given the horrible boss strategies in the walkthrough
