Lewis did a marvelous job… worthy of so much more than a 5 star rating.”… “Fast paced and gripping…the author did a wonderful job on weaving history into fiction.”

WITNESS — An old tale told in a new way!
The events Rivkah witnessed changed history. As a young shepherd girl, she accompanied her father to a Bethlehem stable where she held the baby Jesus. She watched Mary and Joseph flee to Egypt, met the strange visitors from the East who’d followed a star to Bethlehem, and saw Herod’s soldiers kill the children of her village.
You can experience life in Roman Judea as the Jewish people struggle under the burden of Caesar's armies and Herod's cruelty. Watch false Messiahs rise and fall and see the fatal retribution that followed. Feel the pain of the innocent bystanders left to pick up the pieces of their shattered lives.
Meet Shemu’el, the young man Rivkah believed God destined for her. But Rome tore them apart. Divided by fate, united by love, these two young people grow to separate adulthood, each with their dreams and desires unfulfilled, while the world of Rome and conquest moves inexorably on.
Then, many years later, Rivkah finds herself in Jerusalem during the Passover. Trapped in a crowd, she is forced to watch three men being led to their execution. Her stomach drops when she realizes one of the men is Yeshua, the babe she held so many years before.
Witness it all through the eyes of one who lived it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic fictional witness to the time of Christ January 11, 2011
Format:Paperback
Witness, book one of the Seeds of Christianity series, starts with a masterful scene. Delightful details set stage and character, time and temperament; young Rivkah tends her flock and tries to obey the dictates of Yahweh and her Abba while village boys throw insults and lion roars.

There's a beautiful innocence to Rivkah and her thoughts, and the author has a gentle way with words, explaining with just enough detail to intrigue, leading with just enough hints to entice. The story unfolds from wondrous choirs of angels to the storm-clouds of despair, and follows the fractured love between shepherd girl and talented young man, just as the soldiers of Rome are putting down yet another insurrection. Divided by fate, united by love, the two young people grow to separate adulthood, each with their dreams and desires unfulfilled, while the world of Rome and conquest moves inexorably on.

Favorite movies and novels of my youth include The Robe, Demetrius and the Gladiators, Ben Hur, The Great Fisherman, Dear and Glorious Physician... If only I had a paperback copy of Witness I'd add to my collection, but the version I read was on kindle. Author E.G. Lewis has paid the same careful attention to detail and research as these classic writers did, taking a carefully studied historical background and sketching a consistent view of the unknown with masterly pen. The worlds of shepherd and slave, Judea and Antioch, Roman and Jew all come to life. Their concerns become real, the longing palpable, the hope, the joy, the sorrow, and the seeds of faith referred to in the title.

I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it highly to anyone wondering how those early days might have felt when the Seeds of Christianity were first sown.

Disclosure: I got this ebook using a coupon from the author after failing to win a copy of the paperback.

3.0 out of 5 stars Wish the sex had been written less graphically September 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
There is much that I like about this book. The history is well researched and it shows that the shepherds had a message about the angels and the Messiah. I agree with the other reviewers on the book for adults that is.

I just wish the sex had not been so prominent. It is a book that I would like to recommend to my grandchildren. This is a book that could even be for the 10 year old if it were not for that one thing. The book would have been just as good if some of the scenes had been faded out so to speak.

5.0 out of 5 stars From "It Is To Write" February 17, 2010
Format:Paperback
"An Old Story told in a New Way--" goes the tagline on the back cover of E.G. Lewis's Witness. The only thing that description leaves out is "--and told really well." I had the pleasure of reading the manuscript of Witness during its development. I then had the pleasure then of reading the final product. The Law of Diminshing Returns suspended itself in this case. The second read was as enjoyable--if not more so--than the first.

Ed Lewis has crafted an wonderfully entertaining, thought-provoking, and deeply informative novel of a young Jewish shepherdess, Rikvah, who witnesses the angelic announcement of Christ's birth. As the only female among the shepherds who go to see "this which has happened, which the Lord has told us about," she becomes the first human being after Mary and Joseph to cuddle the Infant. This would not be the last event Rikvah witnesses in the life of the Christ.

Witness follows Rikvah's life in the years following the Incarnation, and that of Shemuel, a childhood friend and, she hopes, someday her betrothed. A catastrophe at the Temple yanks Shemuel from Rikvah's life, but not from her heart. What follows is a poignant tale of faith, loyalty, and finally redemption in more ways than just one.

A friend once told me, "When I read historical fiction, I want to learn something." If you share that viewpoint, this is the book for you. Witness immerses you in Judean village life in the 1st-century AD where you learn everything from spinning yarn and making cheese to coming of age under the yoke of Roman oppression. But the storyline never disappears behind the education. Mr. Lewis weaves the lore seamlessly into the adventure, blending meticulous research and practiced storytelling into a delightfully statisfying tale that you won't soon forget.

Great read, Ed! Thanks.

Writing has always been a part of my life. I am a former newspaper editor and publisher and my articles have appeared in many national and regional magazines. I also wrote and directed corporate training films. I currently write both Christian and Mainstream novels. I also have a number of Non-Fiction eBooks derived from research for my best-selling Seeds of Christianity™ Series.
The Series follows the life of Rivkah, a young girl who visited the stable in Bethlehem and held the baby Jesus. As an adult, she witnesses the crucifixion. Rivkah and her family eventually convert to Christianity, face persecution and move to Antioch with Peter. After spending time in Antioch, they again relocate to Rome where they encounter Nero's persecution. The books are Biblically and historically accurate and offer a window into First Century life.
I live on the Southern Oregon Coast near the ocean with my wife who is also a writer and editor.
