This review is from: THE WIZARD KING TRILOGY 2 HC: Odkin Son of Odkin (Wallace Wood Trilogy: The Wizard King) (Hardcover)
Wood's irreverent view of the sword and sorcery genre still makes good fun for grownups. Odkin, the hero, retains a surprisingly immature look - perhaps a visual reminder that the heroic fantasy genre has never been the most mature kind of literature. The female characters, however, display a full and curvy adulthood, clearly shown by their lack of clothes and their instant submission to Odkin's manly charms.
The stories work well enough, with plenty of swordplay and evil wizardry. Plots take a few abrupt turns, though. In one case, it seemed just to hard to continue the plot line for one female character. Oopsie, watch the quicksand - well, easy come, easy go. This is really about the humor, though, from visual gags like the sleepy eye on the wizard's door to the characters' names (competing gods Iam and Amnot come to mind). Maybe it's not brilliant satire or epic fantasy. Some moments call for a good story, well drawn, that doesn't take itself too seriously. "The Wizard King" suits those moments perfectly. -- wiredweird |
