Product Description

This award winning WMF Ceramill Deluxe Spice Mill features an elegant combination of glass and Cromargan stainless steel. Herbs and spices, when they are freshly ground, develop their aromas as their essential oils are released during the act of grinding. The original ceramic grinding mechanism is harder than steel and won't rust or corrode. This WMF Deluxe ceramill is versatile and perfect for any kitchen, whether it be for grinding herbs, spices or simply salt or pepper.

These work great and are made well.

Best of all, your table stays clean, because the top is a small metal lid that lifts off, and to grind, you turn the entire mill upside down.

Highly recommend eventhough it is pricey.

I have two of these -- one for peppercorns, one for chunky salt. I like everything about them. They are elegant, solidly-made (thick glass, substantial metal), and grind really well. I expect to use them for decades. They're a good size and stand stably. I keep them on a windowsill.

Best of all, your table stays clean, because the top is a small metal lid that lifts off, and to grind, you turn the entire mill upside down. (You can't tell from the picture, but this is a manual mill, not battery-powered.) That means that unlike most mills, the grinding mechanism with the leftover pepper or salt dust seeping out never touches the tabletop. It's very hard to find a peppermill with this intelligent design feature.

The stainless steel in the WMF Deluxe Ceramill is nothing more than a cosmetic wrap around their standard plastic mill. This isn't what I expected and probably would not have ordered the mill if I had known. That said, it works great and I'm sure I'll get years of use out of it.

I have been looking for a great pepper/salt mill for a while. I have purchased the battery operated versions by WMF and other manufacturers and have found them great but wanted something that didn't require me to keep changing the battery and had a larger capacity. I frequently use various different salts and peppers in my cooking and some of them require grinding so need a number of mills to handle this. That being said let me get down to the review.

Looks:
The product looks amazing. The build quality is top notch with heavy duty glass and metal construction. It does not feel cheap at all and contributes to the value greatly.
5/5 Stars

Usability:
The mill sits grinder up meaning that the as you can see in the picture the glass portion rests on the counter. A simple unscrew operation lets you add more content into the storage container which is very easy. Te top has a cap that needs to be removed which has a rubber seal again very easy to operate. I have used these mills with rock salts and various peppers (black, and blends). I have noticed that the control mechanism for the grinder setting (determining how fine the grind coming out is) is a bit tricky to use mid grind. Meaning I grind some of the salt/pepper and then change the coarseness of the grind, it can be tricky especially if there are particles still in the grind mechanism. I would be watchful. As a note this only was a problem with some of the harder salts that I have.
4/5 Stars

Overall:
I wish I could give the product 4.5 stars as that is the true score but I cant give it 5 knowing that the issue with the grinding control exists with the harder salts and the usage pattern of changing the coarseness of the grind mid grind is a common one.

Had two of these for four months, used for salt and pepper. Had a hard time finding glass and stainless mills that would look good and last--looked at all the common kitchen stores. These replaced a set we got from Crate&Barrel which only lasted 6 months. These work great and are made well. Only drawback is the cost, but overall worth it. I gave it 4/5 cause I'm stingy with my fives.

I have 5 of them - 2 for pepper (white and black) - one for salt, chili and coriander - great design and do last! Also WMF does good customer service. I have a different design pepper mill and when the grinder failed they replaced it instantly for free. Would buy again!

I purchased two of these to replace wooden Peugeot mills that stopped grinding well within months of purchase and then eventually cracked and disintegrated. Needless to say I didn't want to buy either wood or Peugeot this time around. This mill, with its heavy metal top, heavy metal bottom, and ceramic innards seems destined to last a very long time. They look very nice and grind quickly and reliably, in the month we've had them we have been very pleased.

An added bonus is the grinding mechanism on the top instead of the bottom so it doesn't leave salt/pepper dust on the counter where it sits. The price for that is that there is a top that has to be removed and replaced when grinding so there are added steps, but to me that is worth it to keep the counters cleaner.

I spent way more time researching S&P mills than any sane person should. After reading product comparison ratings & owner reviews, I decided on this mill. Here's why:

The fact that it's made in Germany is a huge plus for me. The country of origin is reflected in the price, of course.

The container is clear, so I can see how much is left. And it's glass, not acrylic; I almost always choose glass over plastic.

Refilling the mill is as easy as filling a jar. You just unscrew the glass container from the stainless unit. There are no parts that get in the way or have to held just-so.

A ceramic grinder is the best choice for salt, and I have a Ceramill with salt in it. I also have 4 of them with peppercorns (different types), and they work great w/ the peppercorns too. And, I have one with Herbs de Provence in it because I prefer my HdP to have a finer texture. Yes, I have 6 of them. I love them that much.

Having the grinder on top means no salt or pepper dust on table or counter. The lid keeps it clean & dry. It's easy to access for adjusting to a finer or coarser grind. I don't anticipate having to replace the ceramic grinder, but it can be replaced; I like the idea of being able to replace a part rather then throw away the whole thing.

Two of these mills --salt & Tellicherry-- have been used daily for over 3 years. The others are used a few times a week. We've had no issues with them at all.
