5.0 out of 5 stars Good looking, maximum aeration, great price!
This is a good looking decanter, and the punt at the bottom makes it unusual. One 750 ml bottle reaches about the widest portion of the decanter, so this decanter provides maximum aeration. Finally, the price is great! Can't find anything nearly as nice for even close to the price. While this is not crystal -- and if you leave your wine or port in the decanter for...

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay
I was eager to get this decanter based on the great reviews. However, the quality of the glass is just okay. Perhaps not surprising based on the low price. Mine has a very obvious bubble near the top of the neck. Also, the glass is VERY thick and this creates suboptimal pouring tendencies. There is some dripping. Finally, the price is great! Can't find anything nearly as nice for even close to the price. While this is not crystal -- and if you leave your wine or port in the decanter for very long, you should not use lead crystal, as the lead can leach into the wine -- it is still very nice to look at. Highly recommended

I grew up around wine and realize how much difference decanting can make. Most "company" reviews will tell you that decanting is great for old wines for aeration and containing sediment but why I am such a big decanting fanatic is that it can greatly enliven the flavor and body of those "young" wines that fit the budget a little better.
Sure, this isn't high end crystal, but it still serves its purpose in an attractive manner and you don't have to worry so much about dropping it (as long as it's empty!).
Considered rating four instead of five stars, but only because it isn't the magnum size (which holds two bottles of that favorite red).

Mine has a very obvious bubble near the top of the neck. Also, the glass is VERY thick and this creates suboptimal pouring tendencies. There is some dripping. As another reviewer noted, it is difficult to get all the wine out. Even pouring when the decanter is half full is challenging, involving inverting the decanter nearly upside down.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Great Product Gone Bad -- Don't Buy Until It Is What It Once Was, April 16, 2009
This review is from: WMF Easy Pour Decanter (Kitchen)
I bought an WMF decanter about three years ago and would have rated that one 5 stars. It was beautiful -- wonderful lines, heavy glass, lovely etched WMF at the base, and, most importantly, it worked perfectly to aerate the wine quickly and poured without the tiniest drop spilling down the body of the decanter.

Unfortunately, my original one was broken. I immediately ordered another, but, to my great disappointment, the company had decided to knock off its own product.

The new version has similar but not the same lines (the shape is not nearly so lovely, nor does the indent at the bottom have the same exquisite incline), the glass is thin, and, most importantly, the thing drips, leaving spots on the table cloth and rings on the counter.

I returned the item, which I didn't want to give even a single star but had to because without rating an item a review cannot be posted.

I sorely miss my original WMF easy pour decanter and hope that the company will return to making a product both lovely and functional.

Perhaps if enough customers who bought the original complain the company will again make what was, but no longer is, a marvelous product.

4.0 out of 5 stars So what's in a glass, March 26, 2004

Adding this decanter to your wine accessories may very well save you a bundle. It can improve the taste of less expensive wines.

It has long been my habit to experiment with various types of wines at various prices, usually side by side. Generally I let the wine breathe in the bottle for a bit, then a bit more in the glass. I had found many of the "Oak" california wines a bit disappointing in particular because of the sharpness in the initial taste.

I purchased this decanter mainly to have a more attractive means of serving wine to guests. The decanter met that objective admirably but more importantly it improved the taste of the first wines I tried in it. I went back an purchased some of the wines I had previously dismissed and found that the decanter really does take the edge off making the wine more supple and smooth.

Its not all good news. In some instances the wine did not improve and in fact became thin and lack some of its previous life. I also noticed immediately (being a fanatic for not mixing wines) that if I was sampling several wines that it took a long while for the decanter to dry (and no use trying to wipe it out due to its shape). Thus you are somewhat limited to what you can decant at one setting (one decanter, one wine).

That being said I am contemplating buying a couple more so that I can continue my side by side examinations of wines and decant them all equally. If you buy one I hope you enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best decanter I own, January 11, 2007

This is the best decanter for wine that I own. It is easy to use, works great, and has terrific balance when you pour. Since I have a bad wrist I am very sensitive to the balance of tools and this one is perfect.

Only complaint is that it tends to have a small drop on the outside of the lip after pouring, but so does my decanter that costs 10 times more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific, August 15, 2005
This review is from: WMF Easy Pour Decanter (Kitchen)
This decanter is amazing (I have now bought three). It is large enough for a 750ml bottle of wine when used properly, and will easily hold twice that if letting the wine breathe isn't your thing. It is stylish, and makes a lovely addition to the table or bar area.

3.0 out of 5 stars looks nice, but hard to use, December 1, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: WMF Easy Pour Decanter (Kitchen)
This certainly looks nice, and it's fun, but pouring the last glass or two is difficult. The decanter has to be almost completely inverted to empty it. This is not too difficult, but because of the angle, the wine comes out very quickly and can easily spill.

For many years, I thought there's no difference between letting wine breathe in the bottle instead of in a carafe. I even thought it was more elegant to leave the wine in the bottle so people can read the label. So it takes longer... but you know, the carafe really makes a difference. Even if you let it breathe for only a few minutes, wines seem fuller, less tanic.

What looks like the exact same shape carafe is sold by Pottery Barn for 50% more money and that one is molded glass from Turkey. Nothing wrong with molded glass, the wine doesn't know the difference between cheap glass and fine crystal. This item by WMF might be manufactured by the same people, but its being less expensive means you can buy an extra little something.

I love this carafe and so do my husband and their wine collecting and wine making friends.

I purchased this decanter based on the many positive reviews, but now I wish I had paid a little more attention to the negative ones. First the pros:
- It's a very wide decanter, giving a lot of surface area to the wine so that aeration is accomplished very easily.
- Very sturdy. You don't get the feeling that it's going to break with the slightest amount of pressure as you do with some other decanters.
- It really is a good looking piece - especially at such a low price.

The Cons:
- Although it says "Easy Pour" and it's designed so that you grasp it by keeping a couple of fingers inside the indentation at the bottom, it does tend to be a little awkward. You'll definitely find yourself using two hands to pour.
- It doesn't empty out! This is the biggie for me. As others have already stated, it is nearly impossible to get the last glass of wine out of this decanter without completely inverting it. And, once it's upside down, I guarantee you've got a bit of a mess on your hands. I just don't understand how such a basic design flaw could've been missed. Or, maybe this is why this particular decanter is so deeply discounted?
