Ones you are getting over the high price of this can opener, and you are trying it for the first time, you are realizing after a few second that the can is already open,
you come to the understanding that this is the best can opener ever!!! and is worth every penny Pros: * It has a good balance/ fill to it * Finger safe *Dishwasher safe, (you almost never really need to clean it because it is cutting the can from the out side and not touching the inside ) Cons: * you get that feeling that you want to buy this can opener to every one you know

I got this can opener and thought it would be easy to use, but like almost everything made in Germany it isn't easy until you make it easy. You have to know how to use it and the photos that come with it, well....I am pretty smart with puzzles and mechanical things, but this took some time.
This is a great can opener, but here are some tips: 1. You have to put it on the can in a 90 degree angle, basically straight. The little thing on the side that looks like it would grab something..doesn't. The picture shows it going on the can correctly, but it doesn't tell you to put it on at a 90 degree angle. Open the arms, put it against the can, and then close the arms. You will feel that it's secure. Think of the can as the dot on the letter "i" and you will have the opener in the correct position. 2. The part that is the rolling disk goes against the can side. Then you turn the handle and you are looking a the can, and HEY, it feels like it is working but you are sure it ISN'T working. 3. But it is....it's because we are used to old can openers that open the can inside the rim and this opens the can on the OUTSIDE of the raised rim. 4. So after you go all the way around the can, you will still be sure the can isn't open. But...it is. Try to lift the top of the can like it has a lid on it. Yeah, it opens! 5. Yep, it opens the can in a way that you can actually put the top back on the can like it's a lid. So cool and so easy. Like this took me 15 minutes to figure out and there are no YouTube videos, and my husband tried it first and gave up, cursing. So if you buy this can opener, you have to think "out of the can" and you will be really happy with your purchase and want to give them as gifts. Which is what I did. But I include instructions - - ha ha --- but only for the people I like! Enjoy!

This opener not only is very high quality and beautiful looking but also very clever design. It does what it claims:
safe: no sharp edges left practical: lid can be replaced hygienic: does not come into contact with the contents versatile: opens all standard types of tins with pincers for removing lid My husband and I just love it and we are thinking about giving it to our friends and families as well :) p.s. We did get confused about how it worked at first until we found out it already opened the lid seamlessly.

Fantastic Can Opener,

After reading the reviews on this can opener I was curious if a can opener could "really" be this good. I have worked with everything from department store to commercial grade kitchen gadgets. I must admit I was pleasantly surprised when I held this can opener in my hand, you could really feel the quality in this appliance. I have never used a safety can opener so I was even curious about how they worked. I can not say enough about the quality of this product, it is truly well worth the money, sometimes you just have to pay more to get good quality. I recommend this can opener to any who are slightly thinking about purchasing it.

After years of battling with different can openers, I have found one that really works. It is easy to use and, just as advertised, the lid and can are smooth with no sharp edges. I'm tossing the rest of the can openers out. This one is a keeper.

I've been fortunate to experience many things in life that have left me with a sense of awe. While a can opener is not going to provide a life altering experience, it is nice to find something that is about as mundane as possible and yet gives one a chance to say "Wow!". Someone had to think about a new way to open cans and then execute the design into a well balanced, quality tool. You can buy a can opener for a lot less money, but will it make you say "Wow!"?
Read the other reviews -- they are very accurate on the benefits. Unless you are really mechanically challenged, don't worry about a learning curve. If you can bring yourself to spend almost $40 on a can opener, then do it. It is definitely a purchase that has value.

Not for extra large cans (#10 size),

I love, love, love this can opener for regular individual sized or family sized cans. It does slice through them like butter, and it's wonderful to be able to set the lids back on the cans nicely if you need to for a few minutes--no dangerous or rough edges at all. However, the primary "event" that I purchased this for was a day that I would be bulk cooking very large quantities of food and would need to quickly open over 20 large cans of tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, and tomato paste. I knew that I would want to have a reliable can-opener on hand (which is why I had read the reviews before the purchase, and tried this can opener out on a few smaller cans in advance).
What I failed to account for was that these very large cans (approx. 6 lbs. of tomato product per can) have a larger reinforced metal rim along the outer edge than your typical one or two serving can would have. So, on the day of the event, I was completely disappointed because this can opener would not work! The metal rims on the edges were way too thick, and I had to put a great deal of pressure on the can opener (and take turns on and off with a friend just to open one can). It was not a matter of not knowing how to use the opener, as I had been using it at home for a week prior to the event to make sure I knew how it worked. Finally, after struggling with this can opener, I had to send someone out to buy a cheap can opener from the grocery store to get the job done. If you plan to use this on regular grocery-store sized cans, this is an excellent and well-designed product. However, if you're doing bulk cooking, try something else. I thought that because it was stainless steel (and I assumed--perhaps incorrectly that the Profi stood for professional) I could use it on the larger sized cans that some professionals encounter when they have larger events to cook for. I regret that I bought this very expensive can opener, and wish I would have purchased the slightly cheaper WMF Profi Plus Can Opener instead. I think the design of the regular WMF Profi Plus would be more adaptable to larger cans since it cuts through the top of the can like a regular can opener (rather than through the side of the can as the "safety" version does). Unfortunately, it looks like the regular one is currently unavailable on Amazon. Oh, well, I guess that will give me time to save up for it! I am giving the Safety Opener 5 stars, because it really is an exceptional product for home use, I just don't recommend it for those who plan to cook in bulk using restaurant size cans.

At the bottom of the posting you will see that I promised to ammend/addend my original post if the replacement was satisfactory. IT WAS. So I am giving the opener 5 stars.
Amazon made it easy to replace and did so in a matter of days. 5 stars from all 6 reviewers induced me to buy the Profi Plus Safety can opener. Some reviewers did warn that it was no longer made in Deutschland but I have been impressed with the quality of most of the items from China with a few exceptions (e.g.binoculars). I eat little from cans so I had more tuna and spaghetti than I usually do so I could test the opener before the expiration of the 30 day return. I was satisfied on the first few cans but performance deteriorated after 2 weeks. I had to circle twice on one occasion and had difficulty removing lids on a few. Also, I got a sharp barb on todays tuna can. I noticed 2 imperfections as soon as I removed the opener from its shrink wrapping. 1. the crank handle was mounted erratically causing it to bear against the platen it is attached to. It is pressed onto a piece of whitish plastic (Delrin?) This causes a slight amount of friction creating minor resistance to free turning. 2. The lid removing pliers/jaws were not perfectly aligned but still functioned. The imperfections may not be a problem but they are indicative of the care and concern into the fabrication of the opener i.e. NOT THE KIND OF QUALITY THAT YOU GET/GOT WITH GERMAN MADE PRODUCTS! Nonetheless the Chinese usually do as good a job on most products for less than half what they originally cost (but the middlemen inflate the price anyway). So, I am returning the opener for a replacement because I like the concept and was very dissapointed with a manual wall opener that used to be great (SWINGAWAY) When I check out the replacement I will repost and if this one is not a lemon I will write a follow up post and give it 5 stars.

Costly But Worth Every Penny,

This thing rocks! I really can't say a whole lot more than what others have said about this can opener as the field has been about covered. I will add that this opener handled every can I threw at it flawlessly. Now I really REALLY hate those infernal cans with the pull tab type tops. They are major pains in the posterior when it comes to removing all of the food from under that large lip resulting in wasted food. Well, this opener zipped those puppies right off smooth as silk making emptying even those types of cans a breeze. It left just enough meat on the cans that those plastic pet food keeper type lids still snugged down nice and sealed tight. Kirkland (Costco) dog food cans were the worse offenders and I'm happy to report that even those opened like a snap. The one down side to this opener is once you use it for a while you'll want to buy a few more to give away to friends. Design is German but is made in China, however it's made very well. It's not a hunk of cheap Chinese junk.

Very sturdy, solid tool. No plastic parts!
On first use I wondered if it was really cutting anything open, so effortless it was to turn the knob. But it did. Then it took me three cans 'til I figured out that there is actually also a gripper on this tool to pull off an already cut, but still tight sitting lid from the can. Now I am amazed about this innovative approach and design! |
