This ergonomically-shaped hand mill grinds pepper, salt, spices, and dried herbs with ease. The Ceramill grinding mechanism, made of ceramic, is so durable it’s covered by WMF under a ten-year warranty. Hourglass-shaped and measuring only 5-1/4 inches in height and 2-1/2 inches across the base, the mill is comfortable to grasp and fits neatly into many spice racks.
To use the mill, the glass jar is unscrewed from the plastic top half, filled with whatever needs grinding (not included), and screwed back on. The press-fit lid that seals in freshness and aroma is removed, and a knob can be adjusted that offers a range from coarse to fine grind. While one hand holds the flared top, the other hand turns the glass jar back and forth and out sprinkles the freshly ground seasonings. Self-adhesive labels are included for applying to the front of the glass jar, though all are in German except for three blank ones. Pros: Grinds easily. Very good output for size. Easy to re-fill. Has a cap to keep counters clean from mill residue. Ceramic grinding mechanism is as strong as steel and will not rust.
Cons: 1 star less because some pieces are plastic, so may break if dropped. If it lasts a year of regular use, I will upgrade the rating. Value: In my experience, it grinds better than any other mill at this price point. You could get a better mill with metal exterior, no plastic parts, and ceramic grinding mechanism, but it will cost 3x as much as this one. Update: After a couple years, this is still good as new. If possible, I would upgrade to 5 stars. I have used it for pepper, mustard seeds, and cumin. Cloves require a bit of wrist action, but it still turns well even though cloves are rather oily. If you want to use a grinder with several spices, then I would similarly recommend a very similar product in Ikea which is a bit less expensive and for which they sell empty containers with lids that can be used with the grinder top.

This grinding mill seems to work very well for grinding hard foodstuffs like peppercorns, and has a coarsness setting, which not all grinders have, but doesn't do a very good job with softer materials like flax seeds.
Also if you cannot tell from the description or pictures, it is manually operated, and is not intended for grinding large quantities at once; so for grinding pepper I stick to pepper mills with rotary handles instead. That being said, the contsruction of the tool is pretty solid, I'll up my rating once I find something to actually do with it :)

For those who use sea-salt and prefer to purchase it in the natural un-ground form, this is the ONLY mill to use. When you purchase your grey sea-salt in bulk, it is shipped damp and you want to KEEP it damp to preserve its natural benefits and flavor. Nothing but ceramic will stand up to the test of grinding damp salt without corroding the mill itself.
This mill has a nice capacity, is easily adjustable, and even has a nice looking design. It should be ideal for peppercorns and other spices as well.
