a good buy,

This review is from: WMF Trend Ceramill Empty Grinding Mill (Kitchen)
Pros: Grinds easily. Very good output for size. Easy to re-fill. Has a cap to keep counters clean from mill residue. Ceramic grinding mechanism is as strong as steel and will not rust.
Cons: 1 star less because some pieces are plastic, so may break if dropped. If it lasts a year of regular use, I will upgrade the rating. Value: In my experience, it grinds better than any other mill at this price point. You could get a better mill with metal exterior, no plastic parts, and ceramic grinding mechanism, but it will cost 3x as much as this one. Update: After a couple years, this is still good as new. If possible, I would upgrade to 5 stars. I have used it for pepper, mustard seeds, and cumin. Cloves require a bit of wrist action, but it still turns well even though cloves are rather oily. If you want to use a grinder with several spices, then I would similarly recommend a very similar product in Ikea which is a bit less expensive and for which they sell empty containers with lids that can be used with the grinder top.

Doesn't work well with Flax Seeds,

This grinding mill seems to work very well for grinding hard foodstuffs like peppercorns, and has a coarsness setting, which not all grinders have, but doesn't do a very good job with softer materials like flax seeds.
Also if you cannot tell from the description or pictures, it is manually operated, and is not intended for grinding large quantities at once; so for grinding pepper I stick to pepper mills with rotary handles instead. That being said, the contsruction of the tool is pretty solid, I'll up my rating once I find something to actually do with it :)

For those who use sea-salt and prefer to purchase it in the natural un-ground form, this is the ONLY mill to use. When you purchase your grey sea-salt in bulk, it is shipped damp and you want to KEEP it damp to preserve its natural benefits and flavor. Nothing but ceramic will stand up to the test of grinding damp salt without corroding the mill itself.
This mill has a nice capacity, is easily adjustable, and even has a nice looking design. It should be ideal for peppercorns and other spices as well.

Great for grinding pepper,

I liked it a lot better than I thought I would. The plastic feels nice and smooth and it grinds well. It doesn't have a cheap plastic gonna-break-soon feel, after all, it's made in Germany not China. I like that it stands upright and has a cap unlike a lot of other grinders that would leave peppper on the table.

I use this to grind pepper. The ceramic grinding mechanism is great and it sits with the grinding mechanism on top with a cover so that you don't get ground pepper all over the table. The only thing I wish they had added was something to make the grip better, especially on the glass, like a rubberized or textured surface. I find it may be difficult to turn the grinder with wet hands.

Grinds easily but grind not fine enough,

I bought this grinding mill because the mill I have takes a lot of effort to grind a small amount of pepper. This mill grinds quickly and easily, but I am disappointed that I can't get a really fine, powdery grind of pepper.

I bought three of these mills--one each for salt, peppercorns, and coriander (although it works well for coriander, I don't use it enough and I plan to experiment with a mix of Italian herbs instead). I have been using them for two years now and they still look like new and have continued to grind well after daily use.
One thing that these don't work well for is moist ingredients. Grinding flax seeds won't work and neither will grinding moist sea salt (like Celtic sea salt).

i am back to purchase more of these grinders having bought a couple about a year ago, for myself and as gifts.
the benefit of this class of grinders is that you can buy spices in bulk in seed form and store them longer than you could in ground form. pre-ground spices lose flavor dramatically within a month. the ceramill is as close to perfect for its intended use as you could hope. the mechanism is both adjustable and strong, while the shape is ergonomic, ideal for grinding on the go in a productive kitchen. having dropped it twice, neither the thick plastic top nor the thicker glass container suffered injury. this mill is ideally suited for dry spices. trying to grind anything oily (other reviews mention cloves and flax seeds) would end up being a messy affair. similarly, cinnamon sticks won't fit into the mechanism unless they are broken into small pieces first. i haven't tried using dried herbs. changing out jars for different spices seems like an unsually tedious task to me. i would rather have one for each spice and dedicate the unit to that spice for the rest of its life. cleaning out the mechanism between, say, cumin and then mustard seeds, may try your patience as it would mine. i wish they were less expensive, but i am back for three more. cumin, annato, and dill seeds from wholespicedotcom... five stars

This is a well-designed and solid salt mill. What it lacks in aesthetics it makes up for in performance.

Bought this for my husband for his birthday, because he wanted a good grinder that had a lid. This was the only one I could find and he loves it. It works great and they are heavy duty!
