This router was not a WNDR4500 model and was not certified refurbished.

I had to watch a tutorial on YouTube to get the whole set up working but it was easy that.

For this reason, I cannot even recieve tech support for the product from NETGEAR.

This vendor shipped me the Costco model R4500 instead of the WNDR4500 model listed here. It would not even start out of the box due to corrupted firmware. Presumably someone had tried to flash it before and had killed it. I had to google how to manually tftp a R4500 firmware (downloaded from Netgear) onto it using ethernet cable before it would boot. (Google for instructions). You will probably have to turn on telnet and tftp functions through control panel ahead of time if you run Windows 8. You may also need to manually set the ethernet TCP/IP settings so that it reads 192.168.1.2 (for your computer IP) and 192.168.1.1 (for the gateway).

If you are like me and need to flash it to DD-WRT, then you will need to first download the telnetenable.exe file, then run it through cmd (use Admin Password instead of Gearguy Geardog, trust me on this). Once enabled, telnet to 192.168.1.1 and run the burnboardid command like the instructions say. Then load the WNDR4500 firmware from Netgear using router update function in the Netgear console. Then load the DD-WRT software for WNDR4500 (for v1 or v2, depending on the version you get). Then voila/presto! You now have a DD-WRTrouter. This will most likely void your warranty, but if you're like me, at this point, you don't care, 6 hours of your life has already been lost forever, and you're already moving onto the next project on the to-do list...

I wanted to post this to save some of my fellow VPNers a bit of my heartache. Take care and good luck!

THE CUSTOMER SERVICE WAS INCREDIBLY BAD. BECAUSE IT WAS REFURBISHED, NO ASSISTANCE WAS PROVIDED UNLESS I PURCHASED A SERVICE CONTRACT (WHICH COVERED "ALL DEVICES", SUPPOSEDLY) FOR 129.00 (MORE THAN THE PRODUCT). SERVICE WAS ACTUALLY A SALES OPERATION FOR THE CONTRACTS -- NEVER GOT HELP, ENDLESS CALLS WERE MADE AFTER I TOLD THEM I WAS RETURNING THE ROUTER. IT DID NOT HELP THAT THE PEOPLE COULD HARDLY BE UNDERSTOOD. THEY HAD NO INTEREST IN HELPING ME SET UP THE ROUTER, JUST SELLING A CONTRACT. I WAS DISGUSTED. I'LL NEVER KNOW IF NETGEAR PRODUCTS ARE GOOD, BECAUSE THE TECHNICAL SUPPORT WAS NONEXISTENT.

I knew this was a refurb, however I didn't expect I would be required to install the actual firmware on router. Not that bad of a process, but refurbished usually means the device was checked and passed manufacture requirements to be resold. Be sure you can follow directions and are able to use a command prompt and install windows features, since TFTP will be needed to transfer the firmware to the router. Netgear has step by step instructions for doing this.

Update as of 9/11/2014. Welp, this is officially bricked tighter than a (insert whatever you want). This router has been listed as something does not take any type of power disturbance at all. Can't return, can't do anything with it...totally dead. Lowering my rating to 1 star.

In trying to expand my wireless LAN network into an area that is not getting a consistent strong signal I followed the directions Netgear provides for creating an AP. Doing so produced only an marginal signal boost and did provide a convenient switch for more devices. There are much less expensive ways for getting this limited networking advantage. I have the same NetGear router for my primary base router and it is a good router. I do wish it had directional antenna (s). When connecting NetGears in this way, the AP (slave) can only send either the 2.4 GHZ or 5GHZ - not both.

This product came with no instructions; they stated instructions would be online. I tried to register the product by serial, but the serial number on my unit had only 12 characters; instructions said that 13 characters were required. I got into Netgear's website and keyed in my product description; there site could not locate such a product. I'm sure it would be quite simple to do the physical installation of the hardware just from looking at the main unit and cables. My concern was how would I get the related software and downloads if their website could not locate the product. I gave up in frustration at that point and returned the product to Amazon after speaking with one of their reps, who had the same difficulty trying to get anywhere in Netgear's website. There is a new generation out there dealing with all of these tech products and procedures - I'm not one of them!

Purchased this item as what I believed was a wndr4500. The product I received was a r4500, there's a difference between these two. The model I receive last 3 months and it got the green light of death. I couldn't get a complete refund I had to pay a restocking fee.. Save your money and the headaches purchase a better router

Actually, I was a little bit concerned to buy a refurbished product since this is my first time for that kind of choice. However, the package is complete and router just works fine out of the box. It is like a new product. I choose this router to simply convert my cable internet into wireless and it serves my need.

First day with this product and I have never encountered even a single problem. I am planning to use one of the USB connections as a external hard drive port. I will update this port for that performance. Also, I have seen some drop out problems in the internet connection on the other posts so I will update that part if I see any trouble.

I would totally recommend this product. Thanks for providing this router to a half price.

**There is no manual so I need to indicate that however netgear genie is really simple to use. In the first configuration, software can even setup the network connection automatically. So, lack of manual is not a problem unless you have different complex plans for a home network.
