Jennifer Newby's "Women's Lives: Researching Women's Social History" is a well-written book about women and their lives in the UK from 1800 to 1939. Each chapter covers a particular type of woman of the times, from domestic servants to the aristocratic women who hired the servants to criminal women. It is scholarly, as readers can see from reference listings for each chapter (resources readers can use to find out more about each type of woman covered in the chapter and find out more about their ancestors who fall into the category covered in that chapter). However, readers don't get bogged down; it is very readable. The back matter, consisting of a bibliography and a time line of events from 1800 to 1939, is also very thorough yet readable.

People interested in the social history of the UK during the nineteenth and early twentieth century will find this an excellent resource to learn about what life was like for all types of women of this time. It is well-researched but not over the heads of those who have little base knowledge of UK history. It is for this readership that I highly recommend this book.

The Kindle version was terribly edited. It had numerous typos, repeated paragraphs and mistakes in the formatting. The images are so low-resolution that you can't read their captions on the page and they don't get better if you expand them - only more pixelated.

The subject material should be interesting but is presented in the driest and blandest way possible. What could be a really fascinating glimpse into the classes of women's life in Edwardian/Victorian England is instead a slog through a mishmash of random ideas, facts and quotes.
