Book Description

WOOD
a novella by Robert Dunbar, author of WILLY and THE PINES

"Blessed is the creature that knows its purpose."

Woods surround a blighted section of a nameless city. After dark, something creeps forth into the streets, something that preys upon humans ... and may ultimately replace them.

One winter night, it begins to stalk a runaway girl.

The creature just made its first mistake.

4.0 out of 5 stars You'll never look at a tree the same! August 1, 2012

Format:Kindle Edition
Positives: Dunbar is an incredibly descriptive writer! It's all in the details. A broken brick here, blowing garbage there... the things we all see, but don't notice. I really liked his shifting perspectives throughout the story. We saw the "edge of town" from various points of view, giving it a vivid life of its own. His characters are classic Dunbar... outsiders, different, loners, and misfits. Their voices are the forgotten elements of society, and I for one appreciate hearing them.

Negatives: Richard and Rosaria needed to tone down the wisecracks! I did not like the way Dunbar tried to inject sarcastic humor into an otherwise deeply disturbing, creepy tale. Rosaria even suggests keeping one of the monsters as a pet! It was a distracting break in the narrative too often. Stick to sinister... it works!

Summary: Horror as it should be. Little gore, lots of fear. Read it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning July 13, 2012

This book is amazing, frightening, and beautifully written. I could not stop reading it - no matter the lateness of the hour, which may have made it even more frightening! I want to read everything Rober Dunbar has written after reading this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Moody and Tension Filled January 18, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Dunbar takes a modern twist on a familiar fairy tale and he gives it a thoroughly moody and tension-filled retelling that is nothing short of entertaining. But like all of Dunbar's work I have read, he gives us layers to pull back should we so choose. In essence, Dunbar reveals to us an absolute necessity of any living being: the need to interact...the need to be exposed to others who are different than we...the need to be constantly challenged--by goodness or evil--in order to evolve and survive. Without others we--any form of life, be it human or monster, the life of a city or a neighborhood--simply waste away, becoming nothing more than urban decay that litters the world.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting short
Poetic is an apt description.  The author can draw true sympathy for his characters including the more...odd characters.
