3.0 out of 5 stars Not Quite Enough
Although the book kept me entertained most of the time the plot was very obvious and I found that a little frustrating as the story unfolded slowly and I already knew what was going to happen. The story and writing are a little too simplistic. I have read other teen books with more depth and though it was enough to keep me reading till the end, it isnt enough for me to...

In James Somers entertaining book "a world within" a young man named Daniel suddenly finds himself in another world after he is attacked by some bullies from his school and hits his head. In this entertaining easy to read story Daniel meets up with a group of unusual friends as he is being attacked By Spider elves. The story follows Daniel's progress through a sword and sorcery type of story with a strong religious undertone.

I would advise this book to young adults, fans of fantasy, sword and sorcery buffs, and there are some dragons in there too. The language is appropriate for young people as there is no cursing or sexuality. It does of course contain a fair amount or the usual sword and sorcery type of violence. I found the story a bit short. This may be because it is directed at a young adult reading level, or because it is the first of a series. As an adult I still enjoyed reading the story although at times events were a bit to easy to guess at.

The story reads like a Terry Brooks novel, which I mean in a good way. I will be getting the next book when available. ...Did I mention it has Dragons...

James Somers has written another great book for all ages, proving that a book doesn't need graphic sex or vulgarity to be good! It is a fast read, one that would be perfect for younger readers/teens with the right amount of fantasy and imagination without getting dragged out. A young boy, who is used to being the one picked on, is knocked unconscious by bullies, in his dreams he finds he has "powers" beyond the normal and is thrown into a new world where he is important to those around him. These dream friends accept him, respect him and encourage him. A great story for anyone who has ever felt "awkward" in their own skin.

Had a hard time putting this one down. Started reading it Saturday. Stayed up way too late trying to finish it. Couldn't do it. Went to church the next day. Long day at church, as I'm a pastor. Finished reading it during the Super Bowl! Let me tell ya...the Super Bowl was an exciting game (didn't get resolved until the last few seconds), but this book was even better than that! I had to finish it! My only complaint is..."Where's the sequel???!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Young Adult Fantasy, October 27, 2011
This review is from: A WORLD WITHIN (Wielder Saga #1) (Kindle Edition)
This series starter began with a bang then had me wondering why the characters switched from the prologue--then I realized the author was setting up the events between reality and the World Within...very cool. The main character is a bullied kid at a private boys school. Classic, but when he the bully takes it too far, Daniel is transported into a world within his mind; and what a world it is. It's full of all kinds of fantasy creatures from dragons, elves and completely new shapeshifters called Wils to cyborgs, monster squids, pirates and even Death personified. Basically, death is spreading across this world--which is indicative of death trying to take Daniel. Daniel has to quest for a legendary Hero called the Wielder, but will find out (second book?) that he actually is the Wielder. We see another person as the Wielder in his own inner world in the prologue and man these guys are super powerful: pulling down lightning and controlling massives vortexes of power. Just read the prologue and you'll see what the character is in for in this series....At this point Daniel still doesn't know, but those around him are beginning to wonder as they see all kinds of strange stuff happening around him. Anyway, a very cool first novel that I hope pans out into an awesome series! Looking foward to the next installment!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best new fantasies I've read recently, December 2, 2010
This review is from: A WORLD WITHIN (Wielder Saga #1) (Kindle Edition)
I enjoy fantasy and this one has alot going for it. The main character, Daniel, is a bullied adolescent, ignored by his wealthy parents and only has one real friend at his private school. An serious injury leaves Daniel unconscious in the real world--but transported into a fantasy world within his own mind called the Living Land. There he is immediately swept up into an ongoing quest for a legendary hero called the Wielder. The Wielder is the one person who has any hope of defeating Mortis (essentially death personified) and his allies in a life and death conflict allegorically taking place in everyone's life. Yeah, there's some depth here, if you look for it and it reminded me a great deal of The Chronicles of Narnia.

In fact, I wasn't quite sure what to expect with the prologe focusing upon an unrelated man who--as the wielder in the end of his own life--has exhausted all of his power fighting against Mortis and finally dies. We get a touch of the nature of the conflict that will be taken up in Daniel's life against Mortis in this world.

The pace is quick and interesting, never so descriptive as to detract from the action and full of colorful characters (dragons, pirates, kings, Elves, Griffins, cyborgs, giant spiders and more) that were enjoyable to read. This novel is apparently the first in a series and I'll certainly be looking forward to reading the rest.
