A very user-friendly chain saw,

This review is from: WORX WG300 14-Inch 3 HP 14 Amp Electric Chain Saw (Lawn & Patio)
Due to a recent storm, I was in the market for a chain saw to get rid of some downed trees. I have three battery powered chain saws from Black & Decker (the hand-held, the pole version, and the Alligator) that have proven to be very, very handy in pruning limbs. But, while they are great for limbs up to 4 inches in diameter, and can be pressed into action for 6 to 7 inch limbs, they throw in the towel when it comes to a 12+ inch tree.
So the search started. I wanted to stay with an electric model since I use it so infrequently. Read some great reviews for the Poulan Pro400E, but it has an 18 inch bar that seemed to be is overkill for what I need. Plus, the user's manual stated that they don't recommend longer than a 50 foot extension, even in 12 gauge. But, I liked the fact that it had an inertial blade brake - kickback can be a real pain (both figuratively and literally). Looked at several 14 and 16 inch models, but none of them had a blade brake system, which I really wanted. Saw this model and gave it a shot. Very pleased so far. I very much like how user-friendly it is for people like me who are not frequent chain saw users. The automatic chain tensioning system is great - very easy to use, and it makes it impossible to over tighten the chain. Also like the fact that it has spikes (dogs) that help steady the saw against the tree. I was unable to find that feature on any other saw in this price range. Add in the blade brake and the automatic oiling systems, and I was pretty impressed with the features. Comes with a plastic sheath for the bar and a small bottle of oil (100ml, which is about 3.5 ounces). I debated long and hard between the 14 and 16 inch models, and went with the 14 mainly since I value maneuverability over power/size given my main uses for the saw. The motor on the 14 inch is less powerful than the one on the 16 inch, and the chain speed is also slower. But speed of cut is not horribly important to me, and the lower power motor allows you to use a longer extension cord (100 ft) without any problems. Worx also makes an 18 inch model, but it appears that's not available on Amazon. You can order that right from their website if you want it. Same features as the 14 and 16 inch, but with a larger motor. Key specs for each are listed at the end of the review. (Note - the U.S. website does not have the user's guide online, but you can find it if you go to the international page, and then click on either Canada or the UK). Performance has been great. No problems getting through downed pine trees. I'm sure a gas powered saw, or a beefier electric would make the cuts faster, but I was pleased and impressed with how it made it through some pretty stout trunk sections, and zipped effortlessly through smaller limbs. The warranty is two years. The manual states the product is "designed in Italy and made in China." If you are very comfortable using a chainsaw you may want to go with a Poulan Pro 400E. Not as "friendly" to use, but very capable and more powerful. Or, if you plan on using the saw a lot, there are some excellent commercial-grade electric models from Makita, Stihl and Husquavarna at substantially higher prices. But for the occasional homeowner use, the Worx models offer a lot of convenience features for a good price. Highly recommend! Specs: 14 inch (WG300) = 14 amp, 10 m/s chain speed, 53 chain links, 10.8 lbs 16 inch (WG303) = 14.5 amp, 12 m/s chain speed, 57 chain links, 11 lbs 18 inch (WG304) = 15 amp, 12 m/s chain speed, 63 chain links, 11.2 lbs

I do not use a chainsaw very much around the house so I decided on a new electric chainsaw. I liked the looks and features of the 14" Worx chainsaw and ordered the saw on-line. When it arrived, I decided to give it a try on a small unproductive fruit tree in the back yard. After pouring in the chain oil and connecting the 100' extension cord, I pressed the proper buttons to power the saw. Nothing happened. I double checked everything, but still the saw did not work. I called Amazon.com customer service to report the problem. I took them up on their offer to send another saw. I was surprised on how easy it was to negotiate the replacement of this saw with another. Amazon provided everything needed to return the saw at no cost to me. Received the replacement and sent back the first saw. Preped the replacement saw as before and pressed the proper buttons. Again nothing happened. This was highly unusual to have two defective saws in a row. There had to be something about this saw that was different from other makes of electric chainsaws I had used in the past. When I slapped the front hand-guard it moved in. I realized then that the chain braking system had been engaged and was preventing the saw from starting. The chainsaw then worked beautifully. This meant that the first saw was probably OK as well. I was upset that I had gone through this hassle because nothing in the box literature cautioned to disengage the chain braking system prior to starting. I called Worx Customer Service to complain about this major omission in their instructions. I hope a word to the wise was sufficient. I am very pleased with the chainsaw now and I'm sure it will serve me well for years to come.

This replaced a tough 17 yr old Wen 14" that stopped working. Look at a bunch of saws including Wen then went with this WORX 14". Wen is still using the same old screw adjustment design for chain tension that never really worked great. WORX uses a large knob to tension the chain that's much easier to use and functions well. The motor on this WORX 14" saw is powerful and can be used with a 100' 12/3 SJTW extension cord. The saw is fantastic for re-cutting large pieces of firewood that came too big for the wood stove we heat with. The overall design of this saw is solid and a definite upgrade over cheapy saws costing less yet saves $ versus the Makita UC3530A and the Husqvarna 316E. |
