A brief history of the sport is followed by a clear presentation of how-to information for novice participants. This information is indeed basic: equipment needed to start, terminology, instructions for the first lessons to be mastered, general conditioning and material on how competitions are conducted and scored. Fox and Schiffman briefly describe proper etiquette as well. Each sport is presented as a worthwhile activity, providing life-long benefits (beyond enjoyment) for its adherents. Black-and-white photographs and diagrams illustrate the various dives, swings, or holds being described, the diagrams being the more helpful. Photographs tend to be poorly composed (a diver's springboard form is lost in a background maze of supports for higher boards) or too dark to be clear (a frequent fault in the wrestling volume). Aimed at an older audience than corresponding entries in the Lerner "Sports for Me" series, these titles merit consideration as supplements to, or replacements for, now out-of-print introductions to these sports.
