most frustrating game ever played,
By Claude Beland (Nicosia, Cyprus) - See all my reviews
This review is from: WTA Tour Tennis (Video Game)
WTA tour Tennis has the graphics and gameplay I've been looking for for years. The World Tour Mode is a great idea where you compete for WTA points and enjoy a rise in rankings.Where I have a problem with the game is that it is virtually impossible to beat a player, even in Tier 4 tournaments as the CPU players never miss. In fact, these 90th ranked players have an amazing ability to hit an ace when needed and to pinpoint returns of serve directly on the line time and time again. I could understand this if I was playing a top 10 player, but hte first round of Tier 4 tennis is a bit exaggerated. It is extremely difficult to rush the net, and if you do, you can be sure the CPU player will find a line somehow or the other. I also found that the controls left a lot to be desired. The dash function only seems to accomplish making the player stop briefly, run then swing erratically away from the direction of the ball; quite useless and frustrating. I don't mind loosing a game, but find myself loosing 6-0 every single time. Quickly lost interest in the game and must say to those considering it to strongly consider renting it first if you can. Perhaps you'll find something in this game that I missed.

Good, yet not enough speed,, but must have for Tennis fans.,

Much waited game version of WTA Tour Tennis is, as expected, pioneering. It is the first and the best playable Tennis game on the PS2 format which is inspiring enough to begin with. Graphics are pretty decent and the players look very much alike themsleves,, though some of them tend to be a little out of fashion.. (i.e. Jen Capriati with light brown hair,,, a bit mid 90s). Yet, if u have been very much happy with Sega Tennis 2002 that has a great graphic with realistic speed of the game, beware the u will face some disappointment here since it doesn't capture the speed of the game well enough. Game counts can be a little long, especially if u play on the tour mode where u have to play full three sets games. Nevertheless, the games are exciting since you have all the well-know players on the Tour on the format, and the draw style makes u think as if u r really competing on the toiur circuit itself..... One last question and perhaps disappoinment may be,,, where is Venus Williams? and Anna Kournikova for that matter? For the moment, I guess Martina Hingis will do,,, till the sequel version come out,, with improved speed of the game.. Buy it if you are a big fan of the Tennis games and the PS2,,, it will take some time to get use to, but eventually u will get to love it.

Very Underrated Game,
By A Customer
This review is from: WTA Tour Tennis (Video Game)
Yes, this game is not perfect, but do not listen to all the people who say that it is awful. I have played virtually all of the tennis games out there: Sega Sprots Tennis, Topspin, Smash Court Tennis, etc. And this is my favorite. Unlike the other games, when you simply press a button at any time and your player hits a great shot, this game actually requires skill. People who say that all you can do is pop the ball up have simply not mastered the timing. Dont freak out when I say this, it is not that hard to learn. When you do you can hit some amazing shots. Tactics are also very important in this game unlike the others, and you can play a variety of game styles. The graphics are nothing to rave about but they are ok. When you get good at this game the computer is too easy to beat even on "very hard". The sound is by far the best of any tennis game. Monica Seles' grunt is perfect! Overall this game has a few flaws but is great fun and definetly underrated by people who think it is awful. Also just a note: Topspin is not that great. It is very one dimensional. Not much variety. Your player tendsto bolt in the opposite direction just before you hit the ball. The graphics are amazing but the gameplay is very mediocre and can be very frustrating. Try WTA Tour Tennis, it is the funnest tennis game out there.

It's okay...,

I bought this game first, when it first came out. It was okay, but I didn't really enjoy it. There are a lot of different controls you have to remember, which I didn't like. The one thing I liked was the different players it has on it. If you want a tennis game that out does all the tennis games out there, you have to play Sega Sports Tennis! It's so easy to play and so much more fun!! I sold WTA as soon as I played Sega Sports Tennis... it was a lot more fun!:)

Predictable,

It's fun -- just way to easy -- all you need is good timing to crush even the likes of Serena 6/0 6/0! Even in the most difficult mode.My major complaint -- WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU SAW MONICA SELES AT NET? Drives me crazy that every opponent comes to net (even when you're hitting deep shots!). Makes it predictable. If you are looking for something that makes you think strategically -- this is not a game for you!

Plain Trash!!!,

This game does not even deserve 1 star. Unfortunately that is the lowest rating I can give it through Amazon.com. It was a good thing I rented this game. The game is horrible in every aspects. The play control [disappoints] and there is no realism in the game. Sorry Konami but you are not known for making good sports game. Tennis fans, if you are looking for an excellent tennis game to buy, then I would suggest Tennis 2K2 for the Sega Dreamcast or wait until Tennis 2K2 for the PS2 to be released at the end of this month. Do not spend your money on this JUNK!!!

Kept trying, despite my previous review,

I wrote a review of this game a few weeks back, I found the game good but lacking in realism as it was virtually impossible to win a point, much less a game.Being the world's largest tennisaholic and stubborn as a mule, I continued to play the game to see if perhaps it was because I was just no good at it. Well, 7 weeks later, with me, my wife and kids all chipping in, we've climbed the rankings with sore thumbs only to discover a technical hitch. At one point, you are awarded special shots, in this case, the running shot. The problem arises when running towards the ball, one then presses a shot button but rather than hit the ball, the player stops and immediately heads the other way. (point to the opponent). My game version is from Europe and the only way to reach Konami is in German (I'm not German) so perhaps this will not happen in the US version. But be warned. Tried other machine, joysticks, etc. to eliminate possible explanations. The game definitely has other problems, such as it being impossible to get to a service return of a high powered opponent such as Serena even though you know where the ball is going. The solution is to serve as slow as possible in order to be able to get where the ball should go (but you're guessing!!!) Also, when playing against a strong server (Davenport), one must actually start their own swing BEFORE she hits the ball. Pretty lame if you ask me. ... Now as a deeply depressed tennisaholic, I must admit defeat and strongly recommend you look for another title.

I wanted to love it, but it is terrible.,

I bought this game with high hopes. But, those hopes have been dashed upon the rocks of reality and lousy engineering. The shot making is so needlessly complicated and annoying that any enjoyment is soon replaced by frustration. To hit a simple stroke you must move the player into position with the directional controller, then pull the racquet back with the button and hit the button again to get any kind of power-shot. Anything less than perfect contact (which is rare and, for me at least, as much accidental as planned) results in too many high lob-like shots that are very annoying. Volley directional control is non-existent. I do like the format and the ranking system, etc., both of which have been commented on in previous reviews. However, the game overall is very frustrating, slow and not worth the money. I think I can deduce the reason Dokic is on the cover: all the top players associated with this game must have tried to play it and decided it was not worthy of their picture on the cover and, afterall, noboby really cares about second-rate Dokic' reputation, including Dokic.

This strange little game is my current favorite video game, but not because it's a great tennis simulation. What I like about it is its odd rhythms, quirks and charm, and it's a great game to zone out on and just go with. On the tennis side, WTA Tour Tennis does things better than almost any tennis game I've ever seen -- tracking stats, great motion capture (done in part by Dokic herself), brilliant use of the players' real grunts and mannerisms, little animations like arguing calls with the chair umpire. For a PS2 game on CD no less, it looks great, better than the first Top Spin even. The courts are spot on, the camera is excellent behind the player, and faithful character models. The bright sunlight and late in the day light are well handled, and the ball is just the right size and brightness for playing. Tour mode is your career mode, and since all players are fully formed at the start, you've got to use their unique abilities to make your way through a Tier IV and Tier III tournament to the four majors throughout the year, each with a robust draw. You can also watch all matches in any tournament so if you're in the mood to watch some strange video game tennis, knock yourself out.
But be warned, any resemblance between this game and real tennis is purely cosmetic. The awkward controls don't help, and hitting a great shot takes a lot of practice and maybe even a little luck. When you do, however, it's a very satisfying feeling. The pace is slow to medium, and as I said zoning out and just going for it is really what this game is all about. It's kind of the Cubivore of tennis -- a cult item that most will hate or ignore but those who get into it will love. One major gripe is that Seles plays in a German tournament which she would never do after her comeback, kind of a shame. I give this game five stars for me, but only three in general, because most people, I think, will give up on it quickly.

Fun when you play against someone (not the computer),

This review is from: WTA Tour Tennis (Video Game)
I think this game is fun to play against someone, we have good volleys and eventually someone will make a postioning mistake. I have not been able to follow the instructions about controlling the direction of the ball very well, but compared to some of the other PS2 sports games we have this one keeps us most interested so far.
