A lot of days of reckoning,

This review is from: WWE Day of Reckoning (Video Game)
I picked up WWE Day of Reckoning yesterday and played 8 hours straight. Well, one thing I know for sure... I'm not going to touch my Wrestlemania XIX anymore. This new game is going to keep me busy for quite a while. I had the chance to go through a couple matches in Story Mode.
The Story Mode is a huge, huge, huge improvement and I believe it gives Day of Reckoning a very good replay value. Of course you have to use a created wrestler to start out. After and hour and a half of creating my wrestler, I started out my quest to become the most electrifying wrestler the WWE will ever see. You start off in the WWE Developmental territory working house shows and building up your attributes. After being coached by Jonathan Coachman, Paul Heyman takes notice of you and gives you an opportunity to wrestle on Sunday Night Heat. When Vince McMahon takes notice of your in ring skills, he offers you a contract to either Raw or Smackdown!! There will be a different story line and different characters depending on which brand you choose to go with.... and you will join a a choice of factions depending on whether you made your created wrestler a face or a heel. I won't go into anymore detail on how the rest of my story mode goes, but I'm in a reunited faction lead by the UNDERTAKER. Let's just say it's just like watching Raw or Smackdown. There are groups being formed, you're asked to make a betrayal or betrayals are being made on you, you're attacked behind the back in the locker room, etc.... it's crazy. The DoR Story Mode is something wrestling gamers will have to experience. The gameplay is much better and the animation flows much smoother. I read previews of this game that it was going to be NO MERCY (my favorite wrestling game) on steroids. It's pretty much close to that. The button config is still close to that of the Wrestlemania games, but the gameplay works much better. The spear move looks a lot like it should, not like before where the opponent flies 10 feet back. A lot of the moves now look the way they should be executed. The moves look even more impressive and with more additional moves I've never heard of before, or even seen executed. Designing your entrance is not as detailed as before, but it still looks great. They made great decisions picking out the music for DoR. The soundtrack is incredible. Seeing the title page with "Bring the Noise" (public enemy/anthrax) in the background really does make it very WWE. There are additional new songs that I'm now planning on purchasing as well. GREAT soundtrack!!! Overall, I would give this 4 1/2 stars out of 5. I hope Yukes continues to make improvements every year with their wrestling games. I still continue to compare them to AKI (creators of No Mercy), but I think Yukes will eventually become the leader of wrestling games if they continue pleasing wrestling gamers with products like WWE DAY OF RECKONING.

WWE Day of Reckoning: The Best WWE Game?,
By Chad Mosher (Flint, MI) - See all my reviews
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: WWE Day of Reckoning (Video Game)
Day of Reckoning is World Wrestling Entertainment's latest venture into the GameCube market. With better models, more arenas, and higher match capabilities, Day of Reckoning might just be the best wrestling game on the Nintendo GameCube ever.
In the last game, WrestleMania XIX, many people were complaining about the single-player mode, Revenge. It had nothing to do with wrestling, and people weren't interested in it. Well, say goodbye to Revenge and hello to the new and improved story mode. But, if you're hoping to take Triple H or The Rock into this mode, think again. This mode is being referred to by some as "Jobber Mode," because you can only take THQ jobbers, or your created wrestlers through this mode. You'll start at the very bottom, and work your way to the top, as Vince McMahon eventually gives you a spot on the WWE roster; That is, however, if you're good enough in your matches as a lowly jobber. As a wrestler, you also are on a unique grading system, will eventually give you cash to go purchase things from WWE ShopZone. In this game, there are a total of 35 normal superstars, and five legends. Copying off of SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain, there are five unlockable legends in the game: Andre The Giant, Greg "The Hammer" Valentine, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and amazingly enough, Bret "The Hitman" Hart. The characters for the main roster are listed below RAW The Rock, Chris Jericho, Chris Benoit, Kane, Triple H, Randy Orton, Batista, Ric Flair, Shawn Michaels, Edge, Christian, Val Venis, Lance Storm, Garrison Cade, Matt Hardy, Shelton Benjamin, Trish Stratus, Molly, Victoria, Stacy SMACKDOWN! Kurt Angle, Eddie Guerrero, Booker T, RVD, Chavo Guerrero, John Cena, Undertaker, Big Show, Rey Mysterio, Charlie Haas, Hardcore Holly, Rhyno, Doug Basham, Danny Basham, Mark Jindrak As you may have noticed, there are a few inconsistencies within the roster, like Rhyno on SmackDown! and the current WWE Champion, John Bradshaw Layfield, completely missing. Also, highly requested people like La Résistance and Eugene are not available to play. Also requested, but not implemented, is backstage interaction. A new game mode in the game, called the "Reversal Meter" is in the game. Like the previous Nintendo 64 games, a health meter is at the bottom the screen. If it eventually makes it to the danger level for your opponent, which will only happen if repetitive moves occur, then your opponent can hit a certain button combination and he will take your strength. Another note about modes, the "hit-a-button" technique for pins and submissions from SmackDown! Here Comes the Pain will be in Day of Reckoning as well And, finally, a couple of interesting tidbits for you all. Unlike last year's games, Kane's theme "Slow Chemical" and Rob Van Dam's theme "One of a Kind" ARE in the game, unlike last year were their previous themes were put in there. A couple of new match types are in this game, such as a Bra-and-Panties match for the women and a Fatal 4-Way Tag Match. I would highly recommend you pick this game out when it comes out August 31st. Day of Reckoning will be the best game WWE has ever made on the GameCube.

Possibly the best wrestling game to hit the GameCube...,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: WWE Day of Reckoning (Video Game)
WWE:Day of Reckoning seems to be a very solid game overall.
I haven't played it yet, though the information provided really makes this game look much better then last years disappointing WrestleMania XIX. The graphics look outstanding, just check IGN.com to take a peek at them. The wrestlers, the crowds, the entrances, all have been improved enormously. The new weight-detection will be like No Mercys where it will be much harder, though not impossible, for a player like Eddie Guerrero to body slam someone like The Big Show. Instead of the body slam not happening at all, you would have to mash the A-Button to pull it off. The new enhanced story mode, The School of Hard Knocks, makes the game worth buying itself. Your character starts off as a nobody, who has to work his way up through minor shows until he reaches the WWE Development league. From there, he works on his stats and Vince McMahon signs him to a contract. Then, you will be on WWE Television shows like Smackdown and Raw, and you will face many different storylines, situations, plots, and backstabbings. Along the way of course, you get to gain Title belts and defend them. Also, they've added new strategies to the game: "We've added a lot of new strategy elements to this year's game that are exclusive to GameCube. The first would be the "Momentum Shift." This is basically when you have been beaten to the point of being knocked out or pinned. You will have a small window in which you can execute a shift of momentum against your opponent. When you see the "Danger" icon flash on screen, you must quickly hit your "A" and "B" buttons simultaneously. If you can pull it off, you will steal all of your opponent's momentum and spirit as well as any specials he has acquired. Now, people may think this is unfair to the guy who has worked up his spirit meter, but it actually teaches the player to use more strategy. The "Danger" meter only comes up on screen if you continually pummel your opponent. The trick is to catch your opponent when his spirit meter is in the blue, but not quite at the danger level. Another little mini-game we've included is the "Momentum Lift." This allows smaller wrestlers to pick up the big boys like Big Show via a slider meter that is similar to the Bra and Panties meter. " (...) There will be licensed music in the game, an improved story mode, an improved Create-A-Wrestler mode, improved graphics, and Legends such as Andre the Giant, Roddy Piper, Bret Hard, Brutus the Barber Beefcake, Sgt. Slaughter, and more! This game seems to improved on every aspect since the last WWE game for Gamecube and definitly makes this game worth buying. I'll be getting one, and so should you. By the looks of it, you won't regret it.
