audio problems, poor packaging, audio skipping, footage removed, jittery blurred logos, censored music, not worth the full price,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble - The Complete Anthology (DVD)
honestly...this is ridiculous. the audio for all the dvd's(every one)are nothing more than crappy mono(very poor)with the sound very low & the commentators very high?. where are the dolby digital 5.1 stereo surround sound wwe dvds we are use to getting everytime. the packaging sucks badly(why not do it as with the past wrestlemania anthology with a bottom & top lid), it splits even with being careful, a lot of footage is removed outta no where(most noteably the wwf superstar line segments), you can tell of this because of the splicing job they constantly do. the audio constantly skips(jumping) when wwf is verbally mentioned, the blurred logos are jittery & shake when theres frame movements. the blurred logo's look like garbage...the blurs look like heavy ice cube blocks on the everything especially the turnbuckles(they even go as far as to blur in-between the turnbuckles...for what?????). seriously i swear in this set they censor dozens of original themes filmed at the the time of the event when it took place(all this very annoying). 1 more thing...there are these awkward "picture motion"(also known as picture speed)frame distortions during the 1999 royal rumble...some examples during 1999 are @: 3:38-3:44, 5:11-5:16, 1:06:35-1:06:45, 2:10:34-2:10:39, 2:35:23-2:35:46, & 2:45:02-2:45:18. it does'nt look "live" at all. it looks like the picture motion(speed)movie companys use for their big motion picture movies & sitcoms. or even vcd(video compact disc)quality. this is truly unacceptable. no reason for this to be taking place. wwe needs to apoligize to their fans right now, recall this whole set, replace all these defective dvd disc's with some newly mastered ones...free of charge. i honestly don't get vince mcmahon & wwe alot of the times on the way they think when it comes to their dvd projects. the 1 star is strictly about the creation(product input) & overall final product at hand(the rumbles are 5 stars all the way). all i can say is how & why?????. know what your purchasing!!!!!.

If You Like The WrestleMania Anthology...You'll Love This One,
By
This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble - The Complete Anthology (DVD)
The Royal Rumble is probably the second most anticipated event of the year due to the fact that this is the main PPV that starts the setup of storylines & begins the Road To WrestleMania. This anthology is really the perfect counterpiece to the WrestleMania anthology.
1988 - The Hogan/Andre II contract signing, Rude/Steamboat match & the Rumble won by Hacksaw Jim Duggan are worth watching. 1989 - The first PPV event as Big John Studd won. Highlights include Demolition members Ax & Smash drawing the first two numbers and confrontation between Hogan & Savage. Also check out the 2 out of 3 falls match between Hart Foundation/Jim Duggan vs. Dino Bravo/Rougeau Brothers on here. 1990 - The big story of this was the tease of Hogan vs. Warrior before Hogan would go on to win. One of the best Rumbles in history. 1991 - Hogan won this Royal Rumble. Sgt. Slaughter won the WWF Title from Ultimate Warrior...with help from Randy Savage. The Dusty/Dustin vs. Dibiase & Virgil match was just background to the long awaited Virgil turn against Dibiase. One of the best overall Rumble cards in history. 1992 - Ric Flair won this one & the WWF Title as this was one of the most entertaining Rumbles down to Bobby Heenan reacting to Flair's every move on commentary. The only memorable undercard match was Roddy Piper winning the Intercontinental Title from The Mountie. 1993 - Yokozuna won with the stupid ending of Randy Savage pinning him (in a battle royal?) but Yoko kicked out so strongly that Savage went over the top. WWF Champion Bret Hart fought Razor Ramon in a good match along with the long awaited Shawn Michaels vs. Marty Jannetty match. 1994 - This featured Owen Hart's turn against Bret Hart and Bret Hart & Lex Luger both ended up winning the Rumble match, and the Undertaker losing the casket match against Yokozuna. 1995 - Shawn Michaels became the first person to enter #1 & win. WWF Champion Diesel vs. Bret Hart saw Bret use a more aggressive style that anyone has seen from him leading to a great match that gets overshadowed by their Survivor Series match later in the year. Jeff Jarrett won the Intercontinental title against Razor Ramon and Lawerence Taylor was confronted by Bam Bam Bigelow. 1996 - Shawn Michaels second Rumble win featured Vader's debuted & dominating the match before his confrontation with Yokozuna and Jake "The Snake" Lawler returning. Goldust won the Intercontinental Title from Razor Ramon and the WWF Title match between Bret Hart & Undertaker was something to check out. 1997 - Shawn Michaels won back the WWF Title in his homestate from Sid. Austin would win the Rumble in a classic heel way putting over his character and also putting over Bret's current "you screwed me" character. The Rumble match itself also had various highlights such as Terry Funk's appearence, and Stone Cold's dominace, and Jerry Lawler setting a Rumble record. Other things to look out for on the undercard are the Goldust/HHH match and the Undertaker/Vader match. 1998 - The Rumble match was very entertaining with Mick Foley enterting under all three personas with Stone Cold winning in the end. HBK/Undertaker faced off in a casket match & delievered with Kane lighting the casket on fire set the stage for their WrestleMania match. Mike Tyson does make an appearence here as well. 1999 - The Rumble itself had Vince & Austin's first fight which started & ended the Rumble. The real highlight of this Rumble was the Rock vs. Mankind "I Quit" match as Foley took the most vicious chairshots. The rest of the card was very average to boring to just plain sad (Sable's strap match against Luna). 2000 - Tazz debuted, Dudleyz vs. Hardyz in the first tables match, and the Cactus Jack vs. HHH street fight were at this event. The Rumble itself had some funny moments such as Too Cool & Rikishi dancing during the middle of the match and Funaki being eliminated more times in a Rumble match than anyone else in history with The Rock winning at the end. 2001 - Stone Cold won this Rumble that featured a Drew Carey appearence, and Kane's dominate record of 11 men eliminated. The catfight between Stephanie McMahon & Trish Stratus, a classic ladder match between Jericho & Benoit, and a match between Dudleys vs. Edge & Christian are worth seeing. 2002 - The two best matches were Flair & McMahon's street fight and Jericho vs. The Rock. HHH won this Rumble but the real highlight was Maven eliminating Undertaker. 2003 - WWE Champion Kurt Angle & Chris Benoit wrestled in a classic match. The Rumble match had good moments like Jeff Hardy finally getting his hands on Matt Hardy & the storyline between Jericho & HBK. Lesnar would win it after having a good match with Big Show earlier. 2004 - Benoit drew #1 & won as other delevopments included Mick Foley's return, the first signs of the Undertaker returning to his "deadman" character, and the interaction between Brock & Goldberg. The other standout matches were HBK vs. HHH and Eddie Guerrero vs. Chavo Guerrero. 2005 - This included the HBK/Angle confrontation, Benoit & Holly having a chopping contest on Daniel Puder's chest, and the finish that results in Vince McMahon injuring his quad. HHH vs. Randy Orton, JBL vs. Show vs. Angle, Edge vs. HBK, and Undertaker vs. Heidenrich in a casket match are all worth checking out. 2006 - Rey Mysterio ended up winning the Rumble at the end. The only good match was the Cena vs. Edge match that was really a fun match to watch. 2007 - MNM vs. Hardyz was a good performance as was the Cena/Umaga "Last Man Standing" match. The Rumble match itself was fun to watch, as it was your average Rumble with the last 10 mins. really being something you wouldn't want to miss with Undertaker, HBK, and Rated RKO.

Unwrapping the DVD set,

This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble - The Complete Anthology (DVD)
I am still digging into the new boxed set, but I wanted to echo several comments about the packaging. It is indeed awkward, fragile, and ill-concieved. A piece of printed paper hold together two large heavy sides. I have pampered the case like a newborn baby and it's already about to tear. Normal wear and tear will have people buying new cases in the first month.
Beyond that....I can't wait to see all 56 hours. -jc

whats the reason pro-censorship people???.,
A Kid's Review
This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble - The Complete Anthology (DVD)
to the ones that are saying shut up about the wwf scratch logo/letter edits, i somewhat agree with you but not as much as you think. the reason i somewhat agree is because it's a waste of time and energy(for us...including me...who enjoy the "attitude" era footage)to complain about something we have no control over. it's obvious vince can't & won't grow a set to get this lawsuit business over with. so nothing can be done about that. but to the ones who say shut up, tell me this???. whats the reason for how bad the blurring looks?. whats the reason for the audio skipping when wwf is supposed to be said. whats the reason for gluing words together when it's not supposed to be?. whats the reason for cutting footage outta nowhere for no reason?. whats the reason for deleting original music filmed at the time of the event?. whats the reason for censoring swear words on the new wwe re-releases when they were intact on their past dvd releases?. you get the point!!!. i don't remember any of this being part of the wwf lawsuit & court order. do you? explain that.

Small details are a pain, but definately the best purchase I have made in years,
By
This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble - The Complete Anthology (DVD)
I had been waiting for the release of this package from when it was announced. Naturally, I am just so happy to finally have this anthology.
There are a few very minor details that kind of bug me. I believe it is the 1996 disc that has pretty poor audio. It sounds like they are trying to play the audio way too loud. The second is the disc from 1992 or 1993, it just looks a little grainy, even compared to the earlier years. I am sure this is simply due to the company not having DVD quality masters to work with. There are a few times when the Fink is introducing someone, and you can see that it is cleary an overdub, just to replace the entrance music. I think that is more neat than annoying, because they went to some lengths to try to replace the audio. If you are a fan of the WWF/WWE, especially of the late 80's/early 90's, you owe it to yourself to make this purchase. I grew up watching this stuff with my cousins and grandpa, so, I felt this was a piece of nostalgia that would be cherished by my family for years to come. My package has also split open like a few people have mentioned, I will probably have to tape it up sometime in the next day or two.

I just got my set on Friday and let me say it is the SINGLE best purchase I have made in many months!! First and formeost the quality of this set is second to none including the Wrestlemania Box Set!! The box is very sturdy, it houses 4 individual sets(similar to the WM set), includes (4) film/photos each individualy numbered AND unlike the WM set each DVD is Labeled instead of the Mirror Finish DVD's.
I've watched 2 last sets this weekend and let me say I forgot just how many GREAT momemnts and matches happen at the RR. The RR is always remembered as the "Battle Royal" BUT there are some seriously GREAT matches here!! ALL the content is UnCensored(even the "Mae Young" skit which I swear had some moments that I did not remember while watching it live on PPV)However they due blank out the "Attitude Years" Logos which is to be expected and of course some music has been changed but, NO BIG DEAL!!!! The sound is unlike any WWE/WWF DVD I have ever heard!! I played it on 2 DVD players and sound systems and let me say it shakes the ground!! The music is Thunderous and the Slams are Huge, it will give your Sub-Woofer a Work-Out!!! All in All this is a MUST OWN and be forewarned it will be Limited!! If you wait you will LOSE!! The store I got mine from had a Total of 3 UNITS(Now down to 2 :) )and not one store this week even advertises it unlike previous releases of WWE/WWF DVD's!! The fact that they Number the Film/Photos cards also makes it a Collectors Item!! Get it the minute you see it on the shelf, You Won't Regret It!!!!

First off, for anyone who still hasn't purchased this set because they are only looking for the earlier Royal Rumbles, I currently have the first volume (1988-1992) by itself, as well as the 1993 & 1994 Rumbles in a case together, up for sale on the Auctions portion of this site. You can find these by going to www.amazon.com/auctions and doing a search for Royal Rumble.
As for the Royal Rumble Anthology set as a whole, I am very happy that they made this collection, although I'm supprised they didn't do Survivor Series first. As some people have mentioned, the packaging is rather strange, but the DVD's are great. There is some logo and music editing involved here, but it is easy enough to look past that. The Royal Rumble has always been a great event, and any true wrestling fan would want to see this collection. Hope to see sets of Summer Slam and Survivor Series in the comming years.

I love the 80's early 90's wrestlers so getting to see this again was a real treat. For those of you who started watching in the John Cena era may find the early years to be boring. Yes there are minor edits (wwf symbol and muting of the letter F in wwf, I also heard of some rare theme music changes but have yet to see it). Overall once you start watching the action you don't even notice theses things. Or at least I don't.I love every thing about this box set except one thing. The box it's in. It is basically held closed by a sticker, but if you are like me and very careful it will be ok. Still would this really be a non buying point for a wwe fan? Didn't think so. You get 20 dvds of every Rumble from 1988-2007. If you are a life long fan of WWE you will not be disapointed of getting to relive all the glory days of people like Hogan, Savage, HBK, Ultimate Warrior, Andre and so on.

Every achival release the WWE embarks on is a benefit both to their corporation and to fans, however the way in which they cover their own history leaves something to be desired. This could have been done better.
