Amazon.com Review

Dreamcast fans have been waiting to come off the top rope for quite some time, and now they have their chance with WWF Royal Rumble for the Dreamcast. Last year's WWF Attitude title for the Dreamcast was mediocre at best, as the characters moved like robots and the control was very cumbersome. WWF Royal Rumble changes all that, with excellent animation and solid controls. This is a perfect translation of a concurrent arcade standup (so save those quarters for more important things--like laundry!).

Nine characters can fight it out in the ring at any one time, making this game a showcase for the power of the Dreamcast. The action turns into quite the melee as over 20 of your favorite WWF superstars (the Rock, the Road Dogg, Kane, D'Lo Brown, the Big Show, for instance) take to the squared circle in a battle of epic proportions.

Like its arcade cousin, the Dreamcast version features controls that are easy to learn and a breeze to execute. One button is used for attacking, another for grappling, and a third for pinning, running, and climbing the top rope. Use the directional pad when tapping the buttons to determine which special move you will perform on your opponent. A double button press during a match causes your partner to toss in a concealed weapon, do a run-in attack, or maybe even perform a double tag-team move on your opponent.

Each time a wrestler takes damage or delivers a special move, his or her special meter increases. Once the meter is filled, an S appears next to the meter. The letters allow signature moves to be executed, or they can be used to escape or hold a pin. The more Ss you have, the more power you have in a match (you can save up to five of these important letters).

The single-player mode gets old quickly, but add two or three of your friends and this game becomes amazing. For some, WWF Royal Rumble will be a button-mashing masterpiece. --Todd Mowatt

Pros:

  • Up to nine wrestling characters at a time
  • Perfect port of the arcade version
  • Special meter allows you to save up for special moves
Cons:
  • Limited fun for the single player

Product Description

You've seen one on one, tag teams, doubles, and whatnot, but this is crazy! In WWF Royal Rumble, you'll get yourself into a brawl simultaneously involving up to nine wrestlers and one helpless referee (with this kind of fighting, what power are rules anyway?). This free-for-all madness even spills out of the ring into the parking lot, where you'll have to avoid getting hit by passing cars. Developed in tandem with the coin-op version of the same game, WWF Royal Rumble is free of career managing and wrestler creation and concentrates instead on dynamic group mayhem. Go ahead and punch one wrestler and then leave him to put another in a lock; it's entirely up to you. You can even partner with another wrestler and have him execute moves on your behalf--valuable when your face is being pushed into the canvas.

3.0 out of 5 stars WWF Royal Rumble doesn't lay the smackdown, August 19, 2000

One would think that the first WWF game to hit the Sega Dreamcast would be nothing short of electrifying. Well, guess again. Royal Rumble is an overall decent game, but it lacks any depth and gets old quickly. You can only play in a Royal Rumble or in an exhibition tournament mode. That's it. No tag matches, no cage matches, no hardcore matches, nothing. Also frustrating is that all the characters handle almost the same. If you learn the game with one guy (which doesn't take very long), then you've learned the game with every guy. There is no real depth, especialy since there are only 21 wrestlers in all. To make matters worse, there are no entrances; instead, we are given two second glimpses of the wrestlers making their way to the ring. I suppose that the point I'm trying to make is that WWF Royal Rumble is indeed an arcade style wrestling game. It has no depth, and it gets old quickly. You are better off renting this one and sticking with Smackdown! for your Playstation.

I bought this game while I was cruising around Wal-Mart, It was a new WWF game for Dreamcast which i immediatly thought was awesome. Me being a WWF enthusiast and a big fan of Wrestlemania 2000 I thought what the hell and picked it up. This games high point is the 9 man royal rumble where 9 people are in the ring at once instead of the usual 4. But only being 20 playable characters (the game is missing a lot, 2 cool, Dudleys, Cactus Jack, Blackman, Crash etc.) you will definitly see Rikishy in there about 5 times, it gets repetitive INCREDIBLY fast. Maybe fun with 4 people. So then I tried the ONLY other mode, Exhibition, yes there are no create a player options, there are no match rules and no arena changes. Exhibition may be entertaining til you fight the incredibly hard not very exciting last wrestler (Vince or Shane...big whoop...). So you go through hell to beat them and ooo you get the credits...... In way of graphics, the lighting is sweet but the wresters look like smooth textured Smackdown wrestlers. The control system is the same as Smackdown and it can be quirky at some times. Dont waste your money and wait for No Mercy because thats gonna be awesome. This game seems like it was pushed out of the woodworks incredibly fast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barebones Arcade-Style Wrestling...But at least it's fun!, December 16, 2001

This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble (Video Game)
Don't buy this game if you're looking for detailed creat-a-wrestler modes, don't buy if if you're looking for a complex grappling system, don't buy it if you're looking for photo-realistic versions of your favorite WWF superstars, don't even buy it if you're looking for a wrestling game even remotely close to any of the more recent simulations of the sport. Instead, if you like good-old arcade-style fare (think Pro Wrestling on the NES) and don't mind the low-poly look of the combatants, grab this one quick. This IS an arcade game, so gameplay is fast and furious, and thanks to the ROYAL RUMBLE event, not as long as you'd usually want it (forget about wearing the opponent down, throw him out of the ring). Gameplay is competent, and it's a blast for multiplayer gaming, espectially among WWF fans, since most of the major stars are there (Rock, Undertaker, Big Show, Austin, etc.). A fun, easy to pick-up game, that's not too fun to play alone.
