4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty fun game.... but only if....
This game is extremely fun, there are a lot of characters to choose from (not as many as smackdown 2 just bring it, or raw is war for x-box, but still there are a lot.) The finishing moves are great, but the only problem is two things. ONe, it is way to easy to perform a finishing move, (you can be about 5 inches away fromthe guy and still perform it, 2, it is way to easy...

3.0 out of 5 stars WWF Royal Rumble doesn't lay the smackdown
One would think that the first WWF game to hit the Sega Dreamcast would be nothing short of electrifying. Well, guess again. Royal Rumble is an overall decent game, but it lacks any depth and gets old quickly. You can only play in a Royal Rumble or in an exhibition tournament mode. That's it. That's it. No tag matches, no cage matches, no hardcore matches, nothing. Also frustrating is that all the characters handle almost the same. If you learn the game with one guy (which doesn't take very long), then you've learned the game with every guy. There is no real depth, especialy since there are only 21 wrestlers in all. To make matters worse, there are no entrances; instead, we are given two second glimpses of the wrestlers making their way to the ring. I suppose that the point I'm trying to make is that WWF Royal Rumble is indeed an arcade style wrestling game. It has no depth, and it gets old quickly. You are better off renting this one and sticking with Smackdown! for your Playstation.

I bought this game while I was cruising around Wal-Mart, It was a new WWF game for Dreamcast which i immediatly thought was awesome. Me being a WWF enthusiast and a big fan of Wrestlemania 2000 I thought what the hell and picked it up. This games high point is the 9 man royal rumble where 9 people are in the ring at once instead of the usual 4. But only being 20 playable characters (the game is missing a lot, 2 cool, Dudleys, Cactus Jack, Blackman, Crash etc.) you will definitly see Rikishy in there about 5 times, it gets repetitive INCREDIBLY fast. Maybe fun with 4 people. So then I tried the ONLY other mode, Exhibition, yes there are no create a player options, there are no match rules and no arena changes. Exhibition may be entertaining til you fight the incredibly hard not very exciting last wrestler (Vince or Shane...big whoop...). So you go through hell to beat them and ooo you get the credits...... In way of graphics, the lighting is sweet but the wresters look like smooth textured Smackdown wrestlers. The control system is the same as Smackdown and it can be quirky at some times. Dont waste your money and wait for No Mercy because thats gonna be awesome. This game seems like it was pushed out of the woodworks incredibly fast.

3.0 out of 5 stars Barebones Arcade-Style Wrestling...But at least it's fun!, December 16, 2001

This review is from: WWE: Royal Rumble (Video Game)
Don't buy this game if you're looking for detailed creat-a-wrestler modes, don't buy if if you're looking for a complex grappling system, don't buy it if you're looking for photo-realistic versions of your favorite WWF superstars, don't even buy it if you're looking for a wrestling game even remotely close to any of the more recent simulations of the sport. Instead, if you like good-old arcade-style fare (think Pro Wrestling on the NES) and don't mind the low-poly look of the combatants, grab this one quick. This IS an arcade game, so gameplay is fast and furious, and thanks to the ROYAL RUMBLE event, not as long as you'd usually want it (forget about wearing the opponent down, throw him out of the ring). Gameplay is competent, and it's a blast for multiplayer gaming, espectially among WWF fans, since most of the major stars are there (Rock, Undertaker, Big Show, Austin, etc.). A fun, easy to pick-up game, that's not too fun to play alone.

This game is extremely fun, there are a lot of characters to choose from (not as many as smackdown 2 just bring it, or raw is war for x-box, but still there are a lot.) ONe, it is way to easy to perform a finishing move, (you can be about 5 inches away fromthe guy and still perform it, 2, it is way to easy to build up your little "bar," in order to perform a finishing move, and three, Triple H does NOT do a figure 4 leg lock, and five, when he does it his leg is going through the other guys leg. Come on, no wonder its rated teen for "cartoon violence."

Over and all this game is pretty fun, but no where as good graphics, game play, and movement as Just bring it, or Raw Is War for X-box which is the best. OH, and for those people who look more aobut me ignore the review about Raw crashing. I got it fixed and now it works perfectly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good game but NOT a Smackdown or No Mercy type game, January 21, 2002

It's a fun game - very arcadish - if you ever played it in the arcade or remember the old WWF Wrestlemania and In Your House games from the original Playstation, you'll have an idea of what you're in for. No storylines, just action - if you want storylines, look to another platform - PS2, PSX, X-Box, Gamecube, N64.

2 game modes - Royal Rumble (30,60,90 or no limit to the # of partcipants) - you must eliminate the number you choose to win - 100 guys can be eliminated but unless you eliminate 30 of them, the game will continue. Up to 9 guys are in the ring at once.

Exhibition - 10 matches w/ a "partner" - NOT a tag team match - but you can call your partner into the ring a select # of times during the match to interfere.

# of wrestlers - 22 (2 hidden) - not much of a selection and no create a wrestler mode so what you get is it. Big names are there (Rock, Austin, Big Show, HHH, 'Taker, Kane, Jericho, etc.)

Entrances are pretty weak - no Titantrons - just a quick image the wrestler with their tag team partner (in exhibition mode). All in all, a fun game, especially with multiplayer but a different THQ game than from the others they have released.

1.0 out of 5 stars Bringing back the dead, August 29, 2000

Not only was Royal Rumble terrible, but it also reflected wrestling in no way. THQ started off by making the wrestling titles great. They put in all real moves and nice matches. The games might not have looked as good as Royal Rumble on dreamcast but the gameplay was sure as hell better. What THQ did was bring back Acclaim's Wrestlmania Arcade and In Your House games. The gameplay is the same in all which moves away from the real meaning of wrestling. This game would be fun at an arcade or with a lot of friends. However, when you are home and you just finished watching Raw or Smackdown, you want a game that depicts wrestling well as to emulate what you saw on t.v. Royal Rumble, in this case, would not be a good game to play. Yes the graphics are great and the Rock throws off the elbow pad, but is that what really makes wrestling games fun? No its how well the game moves in featuring the best athletes and having real matches like you see on t.v. Royal Rumble is a button mashing game which has terrible wrestling modes. They only have an exhibition mode and a royal rumble. What happened to a career mode where you could take your wrestler to the top. There is no create-a-wrestler. There is absolulty nothing fun at all in this game. If I were you I would not make the same mistake I did by buying this game and wait for either WWF Smackdown coming out on playstation or WWF No Mercy coming out on Nintendo 64. Hopefully THQ will clean up their acts for those games.

4.0 out of 5 stars could have more, but extremely fun nonetheless, August 16, 2000
= Durability:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:5.0 out of 5 stars

Finally, a wrestling game for the DC that is fun. Those who are looking for an options filled wrestling sim will be disappointed but for those looking for a fun, fast paced game Royal Rumble will satisfy. The Royal Rumble mode is hectic but a blast to play. The main problem, and I'm sure this will pop up in every review posted, is that there are only 21 characters so the same characters will show up in the ring more than once. And in a related problem, why Edge and no Christian? Where are the Dudley Boys? With the ability to do tag team moves, it would have been awesome to give that shmuck X-Pac a 3-D. More modes would have been nice, too.

But as it is Royal Rumble is an arcade game, and an extremely fun one at that. Having a partner outside the ring to help out adds a lot to the game. I like the powerup system, too. There is something very satisfying about getting that last 'S' and finishing off your opponent with the Rock Bottom. It's true, It's true!

1.0 out of 5 stars not a very good game, November 29, 2002

Jason Vyncke (Viola, Illinois) - See all my reviews

Alright heres the story....I was looking for a good wrestling game for my dreamcast and I found Royal Rumble, it looked pretty good so I ordered it, when I got it there is only Royal Rumble-not very fun, Exhibition- ok, and a versus mode which is probably the funnest mode in the whole game. When I started to play royal rumble every superstar ganged up on me and they only tried to get me out. On exhibition when I would try to hit them they would spin around me and from there on I had no control over them and I could not get 1 hit off on them. And it is almost impossible to get your partner to help you. Also when you go to pin them you end up running across the ring. If you're looking for a fun game to just mess around with then this might be a good game for you, but if you want a championship winning, hard hitting action type game you will probably want to go for WWE Wrestlemania x8 on GC, or Smackdown: Shut your mouth on PS2.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good game. But wheres the modes., November 21, 2000

Royal Rumble is a good game. If you dont mind only having 2 player matches, arcade and royal rumble modes. The graphics are great and it has some of the best gameplay ever to grace a wrestling game. If you dont mind taking a risk you can get this. But probably only worth a rental.
