At various times he was known as "Hunter Hearst-Helmsley", "Terra Ryzing", most recently "The King Of Kings"...or even Mr. Stephanie McMahon...but in the end, Triple H is always known as "The Game" & this DVD was a look back at Triple H that picked up where his "It's Our Time" documentry left off with various wrestling personality like Jim Ross, Steve Austin, William...

This review is from: WWE - Triple H - The Game (DVD)
"Triple H - The Game" gives a good rundown of the career of Michael Paul Levesque, aka Hunter Hearst Helmsley, aka Triple H aka The Game. The 77 minute feature, through interviews with Triple H and other luminaries such as Mick Foley, Ric Flair, Steve Austin, The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, Chris Jericho, Pat Patterson, J.R. and Edge, plus select footage, discusses his rise to the top of the WWF/E but gives a general overview of his WWF career and in fact briefly discusses his short stint in the old WCW.

THE FEATURE:

The feature talks about the following:

1. His boyhood idolization of Ric Flair.

2. His stint in WCW as Terra Ryzing/Jean-Paul Levesque

3. His early stint in the WWF as American Blueblood Hunter Hearst Helmsley

4. The infamous "MSG Incident."

5. His phenomenal year 2000 including his feuds with Mick Foley and Kurt Angle (including the comedic spots with Foley and the love triangle with Stephanie and Kurt)

6. His Wrestlemania X-7 match against the Undertaker

7. His quad injury in 2001 and coverage of his surgery and subsequent loooooooong rehab process.

8. His "triumphant" return in 2002 including his big wins at the Royal Rumble and subsequent feud and win at Wrestlemania X-8 against Chris Jericho (sans Stephanie and Dog Poop...)

THE DVD FEATURES

Again the WWE is going to Vault for some great stuff. These are the DVD extras included on this release:

1. Triple H vs. Cactus Jack, Street Fight, from Royal Rumble 2000: The match that firmly established Triple H as a legitimate main eventer. All-out hardcore war as the Hardcore Legend. 5 stars. You can turn on the optional commentary track for this match with Triple H and the Coach if you wish. It's a great listen.

2. Un-aired sketch from Triple H's hosting of MadTV. Will Sasso treats us to his humorous (and near dead-on) impressions of Triple H, The Rock, "Stone Cold" Steve Austin and the Undertaker. Hilarious!!!

3. Triple H's Favorite Match: "Nature Boy" Ric Flair (challenger) vs. Ricky "the Dragon" Steamboat (champion) for the NWA Heavyweight Title from Wrestle War '89. Bob Caudle and (a young) Jim Ross on commentary. Terry Funk, the legendary Lou Thesz (RIP) and Pat `O Conner are judges for this contest. 30 minute 5 star Match of the Year classic. This match culminated the red-hot Flair/Steamboat feud and transitioned the equally hot Flair/Funk feud. Truly one of THE GREATEST contests of all time and worth the price of admission alone.

4. The Test and Stephanie McMahon wedding from Monday Night Raw, 11/29/99. The angle that jettisoned Triple H into the main event and set-up the infamous "McMahon-Helmsley FacGime."

5. Triple H's WWF debut match, Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Buck Zumhoff, 4/28/95. Gorilla Monsoon and J.R. on commentary. 3 minute jobber squash.

THE VERDICT:

Overall, this is definitely one of the better personality tapes the WWE has put out this year. The bonus matches were great as it was interesting to see J.R. in his younger days and it was just awesome hearing Gorilla Monsoon's (RIP) voice again. Overall, the extras alone are worth the price of admission alone.

Whether you like Triple H or not, you can't go wrong with this one.

This is a great DVD of Triple H. I bought this at the store when it came out yesterday becasue I didn't want to wait for it to ship. It has about an hour and a half of a HHH bio with other stars opinions of him, including, ironically enough, Steve Austin. The extras show the Streetfight with Cactus Jack as well as commentary by HHH on the whole match. It also has his debut match from 95 and my personal favorite,Stephanie's wedding, or lack-there-of to Test! Funny Stuff. He's out of character most of the time, except doing commentary. Get The DVD, not the video, the extras are great. There's more extras, I just don't have enough room to write about them! The bio follows HHH all the way up to just after WM18 when Steph got kicked off TV!

4.0 out of 5 stars Too Damn Good... But Too Damn Short.. Still Too Damn OK to Watch!, March 10, 2006
This review is from: WWE - Triple H - The Game (DVD)
I see some negative reviews here, who, based on their review, are merely stating why they hate HHH but not talking about the DVD... for someone who hates Trips like that, do you expect them to watch it? Those reviews aint appropriate, since they hardly talk about the DVD, and should be taken down...

That said, the DVD is great! Especially if youre a Trips' fan! It shows highlights throughout his wrestling career to his injury and his eventual comeback. How he idolizes Flair ever since, and how bodybuilding became his hobby...

The only problems I have with the DVD is that its too short - 1 disc is not enough! And there are only a couple few matches. They should make a future DVD set for HHH with all his favorite matches plus his life from childhood til the later years(which aint covered in the DVD yet)...

Aside from that, this is indeed a great collection for any Trips' fan or wrestling fans in general... except the biased HHHaters.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best matches ever!!!, July 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: WWE - Triple H - The Game (DVD)
In response to Ron who felt "ripped off" beacuse the WWE included the classic Ric Flair v. Ricky Steamboat match from Wrestlewar 89 on the Triple H DVD. Firstly it was Triple H's favorite match, and Ric Flair was his biggest influence. This particular match is not only looked upon by Triple H as a classic, but was voted 1989 match of the year, and match of the decade for the 80's by fans and critics.. It is one of the best worked wrestling matches of all time, and anyone who is a fan of true wrestling, or wants to learn the psychology of wrestling should buy this DVD for that match alone. The WWE should give Ric Flair his own DVD Box Set, he has that many good matches. Ron should watch this match a few more times and feel greatful he has it as part of his collection. Also as a note to Flair fans this has a few clips of candid interviews w/ Ric talking about Triple H, as well as Triple H calling Flair out to the ring to thank him for his influence and years of great matches (Flair gets very emotional), also they show a very rare clip of Flair wrestling at Madison Square Garden from the mid 70's on a WWWF show (I wasn't even aware that even happened, I think he was against Paul Jones). Thanks you Triple H & WWE for including this classic match on DVD, it's the only reason I purchased it, please give us more WCW & WWF classics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Those were the days..., October 23, 2002
By
This review is from: WWE - Triple H - The Game (DVD)
Triple H, no matter what comes of his career from this point on, will undoubtedly go down as one of the most controversial and vital figures in the history of sports entertainment. Here, on this DVD, you'll find many of his character's finest moments, going back to the prime of his heel run and his feuds with Mick Foley, Kurt Angle, and The Undertaker, through his injury and rehab, to his return as a mega-babyface and his championship victory over Chris Jericho at this year's Wrestlemania. There is even some interesting (although brief, which is logical) footage of Trips' days in WCW, paired up with William Regal and often compared to a young Ric Flair. Triple H remains out of character throughout the entire documentary, which is definitely the preference for WWE DVD's (why NOT break from what we see every week on TV, and even on PPV?). His comments are insightful and informative for fans who might not know all of the history behind his often-evolving career, in and out of the ring, as well as H's feelings on switching from heel to face, which fellow superstars are his favorite to work with, who he admired when he was coming up, what it's like working with legends such as Hulk Hogan and Ric Flair, etc..

The extras are minimal in the way of actual matches (mostly because his best matches have already appeared numerous times on other WWE DVD's), but the extra footage of his first WWF match, his favorite Ric Flair match of all time, an unused Mad TV skit, etc.. are still a lot of fun to check out. And, as mentioned above, there is the Easter Egg where Hunter discusses the evolution of the sledgehammer gimmick (just go to "Working Heel" in the Chapters list and click an arrow on your DVD controller).

To be honest, reflecting back on this DVD (which I purchased months ago now) is somewhat bittersweet. I won't pretend to be all-knowing like some of the internet wrestling "smarks", but I do know that no matter what backstage politicking potentially goes on, Triple H's actual in-ring and character work has left a LOT to be desired in recent months. Perhaps he is trying to ensure his longevity in the business by not having the high-impact, intense matches he once had, but that does NOT excuse the one-dimensionality his character has fallen into. However, this isn't the matter at hand (besides, it's merely my opinion, doesn't mean it's fact); what matters is this DVD, which shows a very special and influential talent at the prime of their career. WWE did a fine job here in representing Triple H at his finest. Share it with all your friends...and mail a copy to the guy whose name is on the cover, while you are at it. He needs a refresher course on what brought him to the dance...

(VINE VOICE)
This review is from: WWE - Triple H - The Game (DVD)
At various times he was known as "Hunter Hearst-Helmsley", "Terra Ryzing", most recently "The King Of Kings"...or even Mr. Stephanie McMahon...but in the end, Triple H is always known as "The Game" & this DVD was a look back at Triple H that picked up where his "It's Our Time" documentry left off with various wrestling personality like Jim Ross, Steve Austin, William Regal, Kurt Angle, and Undertaker (during his "American Bad Ass" gimmick) giving their throughts on various subjects regarding Triple H.

The documentry begins with HHH talking about his early years of watching Chief Jay Strongbow & being inspired by Ric Flair. His WCW run as Terry Ryzing was only glanced over around for a minute with comments from Steve Austin & William Regal along with briefly talking about his "blueblood" Hunter Hearst Helmsley run before moving along to the "curtain call" incident & how he took his punishment from the incident. The orgins of his nickname "The Game" was discussed before Triple H talks about he fed off real emotions to become a heel. His storylines involving his marrage to Stephanie, the start of the McMahon-Helmsley era, and winning the WWF Championship are showcased before Triple H went into how his feud with Cactus Jack proved to people that he was a tough guy. Triple H's ability to be a heel but yet still be entertaining & comedic is discussed with various clips of Mankind's "Have A Bad Day" skits & his insults towards Kurt Angle...which leads into a discussion of their SummerSlam match with The Rock & how Triple H is a ring general. Both Undertaker & Triple H talk about their WrestleMania X-7 match with both men talking about what they had to prove in that match along with Triple H talking about his feelings towards Motorhead playing him to the ring & how he represents the company. The highlight of the documentry starts here as his infamous quad injury is discussed in heavy detail with Triple H & Chris Jericho describing the incident along with footage & comments on his operation & rehab. The story behind Triple H being advertised on the Vengeance posters & commercials but not appearing is told before getting into the buildup & reaction of his Madison Square Garden return. Highlights of his Royal Rumble return are shown before Triple H gets into the story behind his hobby of bodybuilding & even being the first non-bodybuilder on the cover of Flex magazine. Highlights of his feuds with Stephanie & Jericho leading up to WrestleMania X8 & Stephanie being forced to leave the WWF were shown with Triple H giving his comments including why the WM title match went on last instead of Rock/Hogan before closing out the documentry on what lies in the future for "The Game."

DVD extras include an unaired MadTV sketch with Will Sasso doing impersonations infront of Triple H, his WWF debut on Superstars against former AWA wrestler Buck Zumhofe, the entire Stephanie/Test wedding resuling in Triple H getting married to Stephanie (watch Vince towards the end where he tried but couldn't hide his laughter), a hidden extra on Triple H's relationship with the sledgehammer, and a bonus match with Ric Flair vs. Ricky Steamboat match from Wrestle War '89 with Triple H mentioning in the beginning how Ric Flair was his greatest influence. The other bonus match is his Royal Rumble street fight against Cactus Jack with two options of alternative commentary featuring Triple H & Johnathan Coachman...with the normal one of hearing their voices only during the match & a visual one where you actually see them in the studio recording it while the match plays on a big screen in the background...talking about how they told a story with every weapon being used for a reason (including taking a subliminal shot at ECW) along with him being able to adapt to a brawling style with Triple H throwing in a funny one-liner/punchline here & there.

In the end, the DVD was typical of how WWF did their documentries at that time with just recaps of events throughout the past year with various comments from others. However I felt like this DVD was a disappointment as they heavily overlooked various important moments in his career like his time in WCW along with his feuds with Austin & The Rock. Also the quality of bonus material & matches that made other WWF DVD's during this time releases that would still get 4-5 star reviews today was saved for his other DVD release "That Damn Good" that would come out a few months later. In the end, the documentry was lackluster as certain things were given more time than needed & visa versa while the extras by today's standards are bonus matches you can get on tons of other WWF/E releases (HHH's That Damn Good, Foley's Hit & Misses, History Of WWE Championship, Ultimate Ric Flair Collection) with the only thing going out of your way to see/hear is the alternative commentary during his Cactus Jack match. So I'll only recommend this if your a heavy Triple H fan but if your looking for the best documentry on Triple H, check out the "It's Our Time" VHS tape.
