When I think of great wrestling games I think of one system, Nintendo 64. They set the standered for wrestling games. So when the Gamecube was released I thought for sure that THQ would breakout the greatest wrestling game of all time. But instead they decided to change the great grapling system of old with some new crap, more like Smackdown than No Mercy. So I was dissapointed to say the least. When I read that they were going back to a No Mercy like grapling system this year my hopes were back again. Now that it's here I have to pose this question. Why do people make bad games?

Before I say what I mean by that let me say that this game is much better than last years effort. Indead they did bring back a lot of the old grapling system from No Mercy, including the best part, being able to work on one part of the body, like say a leg, and weaken it for say a Maple Leaf by Lance Storm. But at the same time, they changed some things, and not for the better. The weak graples aren't done the same, instead of tapping the grapple button then pushing strike and a direction, you push the grapple button and a direction at the same time. This isn't as good, as it moves the match along at an arcade like speed. The game moves much faster in most all aspects, as apposed to No Mercy's slower, more sim like feel. With that said, the game still needs work to be as good control wise as No Mercy.

So what about the features. The Story mode, which is supposed to be the main single player game, sucks. You take a supperstar who has been screwed by Vince, and try to screw up Wrestlmania to get back at him. Never does a fight take place in the ring, they're all backstage and other locations outside of the squared-circle. The missions require you to do dumb stuff like throw 10 secrurity guards off of a constuction site. You repeat that about 5 times for the first of 5 missions, and they don't get any funner. Now I know some might think something as small as not being able to bring you wrestler out with his belt is not a factor, but it is. Imagine you want to have some rivalries going on with your group of friends, and you finally beat the guy who always wins, but you can't rub it in his face by entering the ring the next match with the gold around your waste. It's sad, espescially since it's such a small thing, because it would have been no problem to add it. So is there a redeeming factor. The create-a-wrestler is maybe the best ever. It has everything you could possibly do to a wrestler (other than have an escort to the ring, which is again sad). The detail you can add to your wrestler is great, you can even design your own logos for his clothes. Sadly that alone doesn't make the game worth buying. Maybe next year THQ will finally make a worthy sequal to No Mecry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost perfect, August 30, 2004

This review is not going to be that explicit because there are already a lot of other ones in here. Let's break it down.

The graphics are awesome. The characters are somewhat exagerated but they still end up looking pretty realistic. I like the style a lot more than the previous title.

The music is almost perfect. Only a handfull of superstars are lacking their theme music, namely matt hardy, RVD, Evolution, and Rikishi. Fortunately you can still listen to Hogan's Voodoo CHild, Edge's White Zombie theme, and Undertaker's theme, among others. Some themes are outdated for the time the game was released, like Kane's, but I guess we should be thankfull that they aren't many. A create a stable option would have been very apreciated. That way we could have recreated fun tag teams like Kane & the Hurricane, and the unamericans, or created la resistance or the world's greatest tag team.

The animation is below PS2 smackdown's but leaps and bounds better than the other titles. Hogan's entrance is really a thing of beauty. Every superstar feels different and that is a great accomplishment. The moves have been improved since last year and the gameplay is more fun. Like a more arcade-like Wrestlemania 2000. Tag teams even enter the ring together. But the only teams that seem to do this are the Dudleys, Goldust & Booker, and Los Guerreros.

I only really dislike 2 things about the game. First is the inability to create your own tag team. This wouldn't be so bad except that PS2 smackdown's series already has 2 games with that ability! The 2nd thing is the revenge mode. It is pretty anoying after a couple of fights. Thankfully you don't have to complete it to earn money, since you can just keep starting over everytime you need cash to spend in the shopzone. I also really wish that tehy would have included legends, or at least some of the legend's theme songs to use in the create a superstar section.

The game still has tremendous multiplayer replay value. You can customize any wrestler's moveset, and create many more; but I can 't help but feel that the game could have been much better with some of the features already present in THQ's PS2 line.

as soon as i heard of this game i had to get it but i had to get a gamecube. when i got the game it was so cool . 1.amazing exhibiton matches like hell in a cell and tlc.2.cool superstars like triple h,mysterio, tajiri, and batista.3.very cool create superstar.4.you can have divas with bikinis on[awesome].5.a cool type of story mode, join stephanie to form kind of like a fraction against mrmcmahon, gothrough two ring areas in several matches[construction ring and harbor ring]and two backstage areas[mall backstage and parking lot backstage],fight matches inthe ring area and backstage.and your last match will be at wrestlemaniaXIX.after that go to the 2nd part of your season [king of the ring]to finish your season by winning titles like wwe title and world heavyweight title.6. do lots of other things to. this is a cross between shut your mouth and here comes the pain in the audience and gameplay . if you want day of reckoning get this first and then day of reckoning to the two best nintendo company wrestling games ever.

I have been a real big wrestling fan for a while. I saw the screenshots and they look better than any game. They look like real life.I have a lot of wrestling games and this one will outdo them all. They full size hell in a cell. They have newer wrestlers like Brock Lesnar and Rey Mysterio. They bust open after fighting for a while. You can go backstage and everywhere. Youcan fight with stage police. They have evey last detail of all the wrestlers.this is definately the best wrestling game ever

2.0 out of 5 stars Know what you're buying!, September 21, 2003

I can't believe it. I bought into the hype. I rushed out and bought Wrestlemania XIX, got it home and played it for about 2 days before trading it in on Mario Golf.

This game had a decent control system as long as you were only wrestling one opponent. There is no story mode and the Revenge mode is infuriating. The titles hold no meaning either; they're determined in King of the Ring type tournaments. That's fine though, because you'd never know anyone was a champion when they walk to the ring.

The last straw for me was when I set an opponent on the announce table, climbed the ladder that was inches away and jumped off landing on the floor with a thud. I want to get creative. I want to put a table on top of an announce table and jump from the ring off a ladder onto an opponent. Here, you wouldn't make it out of the ring.

As a final note, please don't believe what you read in the reviews BEFORE a game is released. Amazon doesn't stop these "BEST GAME EVER!!!1" reviews from being posted a month in advance, so don't believe them. Do your own research and don't get overzealous and buy it before trying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing game!, July 16, 2004

I loved this game. It was truely amazing. The gameplay was at its best, of any other game. The characters very very well done, alot of wrestlers really looked like them.
The story line (revenge) took some skill to beat. Of course the first couple of levels were easy. But after a few levels it got really challenging. They were fun, to play each level and to watch me go through the scenario.
By far the best part of this game was the create-a-superstar. I've probably spent more time making various characters, then actually playing. With so much unique attairs, hair styles, etc., it made it almost endless for creating anyone you wanted.
This game is always fun and exciting to play, even after beating the revenge mode and buying out everything in the shop, down to the last ability points (out of 999), I still play this game, over and over again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad but could be better, June 29, 2004
A Kid's Review
This review is from: WWE Wrestlemania XIX (Video Game)
Wrestlemania X8 was the first game I got for my gamceube, and when I found out about XIX,I had to run out and buy it.I did and I still thought that this game still had some bugs to it.Most of the entrances are better, and the graphics are slightly better (depends on who you are really),and I like the fact that you can focus on a certain part to hurt your opponent more. However there's a few quirks to this game. The create-mode could've been better.Same problem with X8.Unlike X8,XIX had a story mode.Unfortunatley is sucked. What were the makers at Yukes thinking about. You don't wrestle in this mode. All you do is take out security and construction workers. This is called revenge mode, and it is HARD!
But the hours, and hours of just wresting in exhibition make up for it.If you own a gamecube and love wrestling, than Wrestlemania XIX is what your looking for.Let's just hope that the next wrestling game for gamecube will have some major improvements.
