1.0 out of 5 stars Endless Drivel, May 4, 2007

This review is from: WWII US Army Fighter Modeling Masterclass (Osprey Modeling Masterclass) (Hardcover)
What a mistake! A 128-page endless and nearly pointless ramble that could easilly be edited down to a 6-page folder. Pages and pages of the dreariest and most obvious statements of fact which cannot possibly be classed as 'information'. If you look through Osprey's collection of manuals and books written by Jerry Scutts you'll find them rated: 1-star, 2-1/2 stars, 1-1/2 stars. I don't think that of the dozens of publications he's authored that there is one with greater than a 3-star approval. Why does Osprey keep hiring this guy?? I can't resist quoting from the book: "Adding More Detail. Should you now be a little impatient to complete your Thunderbolt and add the finishing touches, there is no reason why time need be spent on adding extra detail to the cockpit area." [Wow!Thanks for pointing that out, this must be why they call it Master Class]...and from the same paragraph: "Paint the inside as accurately as possible, both from your references and the kit instructions." (Now there's a breakthrough notion, Paint it accurately). How about this one: Under the title, "Worth a Thousand Words? By studying the accompnaying instruction sheet, the modeler will now have a good idea of how the kit has been broken down for ease of assembly and the number of stages this will take." [!!!!!!!!] And they made a $35.00 hardback out of this??!! The man has a fixation with the obvious that would annoy an idiot. Further, he continually refers to 1/48 scale as "quarter scale". Absurd. Quarter scale(1/4 scale) means 3-inches equals a foot! 1/48 scale means 1/4 of an inch equals a foot! Good grief. And this is called "master class." And to compound the endlessly inane nature of the narative, it has little if anything to do with the photographs. What is surprising is that Brett Green, whose reviews I've read on several modelling web sites, added his name to this. Anybody want my copy?
