"Wacko Magneto" is the best album that no one knows about!,

This review is from: Wacko Magneto (Audio CD)
I came across this band's song "Stop Counting" while watching a recent episode of MTV's "Daria." I was blown away by the haunting guitar riffs and the hint of Chrissy Hind in the Anne Preven's powerful voice (Anne--I can't be the only one who's said that). The entire album " Wacko Magneto" simply rocks. Ednaswap mixes 70's rock, 80's punk and 90's alternative to create a unique but familar sound that is hard-edged and gritty. Much to my joy and surprise, Ednaswap originally wrote and sang that Natalie Imbruglio hit, "Torn." Compared to the airy, soft-rock/pop version that Imbruglio did, Ednaswap's version is raw, honest and earnest. You have to hear this version--there is no comparison. I highly recommend this album.

It doesn't matter how you got here...,

Were you curious about those obscure references to the original writers of Natalie's "Torn"? Well, glad you could make it finally...there's more where that came from. And better. The raw power of Anne's vocals quite simply blew me away the first time I heard this album. Pick up the latest album, "Wonderland Park" also to get the full Ednaswap picture. You won't regret it.

Rock Classic. MUST HAVE,

These guys are famous for writing "Torn" (which Natalie Imbublia had a hit with), but "Torn" is just the tip of the iceberg. Ednaswap actually broke up, but the core of that band, Anne and Scott, formed a new band called Annetenna.

Early record by too-obscure L.A. band,

Ednaswap is gone but not forgotten. Their biggest brush with commercial success was when Australian singer Natalie Imbruglia covered "Torn", a song from this CD that also had a different recording of it on an earlier self-titled Ednaswap CD.Ednaswap's records feature clever songwriting with a pop/rock sensibility, powerful vocals by Anne Previn, and some very satisfying guitar work and production. Tired of moaning about the sorry state of music today? If more bands like Ednaswap got the exposure and promotion that they deserve(d), then we'd have no worries. Grab this CD if you can find it, and follow it up with their follow-up CD "Wonderland Park".

Fine Release,

Like some of the other reviewers, I first heard Anne Preven on the Howard Stern show. Her acoustic version of "Torn" is much better than Natalie Imbruglia's treatment. A little research and I find this Ednaswap release with the same tune included. This is fine music, an excellent alternative CD. "More", "Clown Show", "Shrapnel", "Claustrophobic", & "Sideways Out The Window" are top notch. Anne's voice is powerful, raw, & smokey...just fantastic. A one star hit from me for the vocal effects on a couple of tunes. Her voice is too good for that silliness. BTW, the original version of "Torn" on this release is stellar. Open and close with some killer Jimi Hendrix flavored guitar riffs, throw some Mudhoney chording in the middle and top it off with Anne's edgey vocals and you've got a meaty, mini masterpiece. Ednaswap has another fan in me.

Edswap, one of my new favorite bands...,

I walked into a local music store and squirming its way through the speakers was a little band called "Ednaswap"... I tell the clerk that I like what I hear and he gives me that bands name... Pity it was the only copy they had. SO... a month later I see Wacko Magneto in the listening station. I recall the band & I give it another listen... The first song, "Stop Counting" grabbed me and pulled me away like a wonderful memory... I listened to half of the album right there & bought it. You should do the same. This band has talent, a unique sound thats not too different. All the songs end in ways that just leave you with a complete feeling inside without sounding "poppy" in the slightest sense. Thanks, Ednaswap... for being one of mynew favorite bands. These are the guys who wrote the famos "Torn" song that Natalie I. covers. Give credit where it's do. Enjoy this album.

Better than Imbruglia,

Absolutely do NOT buy this album simply because you liked the acoustic version of "Torn" played on the Howard Stern show--you will most likely be disappointed, as Ednaswap is an alternative band. The songs have a great sharp and clear quality with lots of depth. Listen to it a couple times and it will grow on you.

Will the genuine writer of 'Torn' please stand up?,

Too bad this band was lost in the mid-90s grunge wave. Anne Preven actually sounds a little like Johnette Napolitano and Ednaswap's original version of 'Torn' leaves that little waif Natalie Imbruglia in the dust. 'Clown Show', 'Pale' and 'Claustrophobic' are also great. Think hard rock alternative with a powerful female vocal. Glad they're finally getting some recognition, even if it is second-hand.

I did find out about this band because of Natalie Imbruglia, but this is much better and "Torn" was the only real good thing Imbruglia had in the first place. But here you have some fantastic melodic rockers ("Chordomatic", "Pale", "All Time Low", "Stop Counting"), slower greatness ("Silver Hill", "Torn"), and fun house themed rock "Clown Show".
I'm not really sure how to describe this music, except in addition to huge hooks the songs rock hard and the singers' voice is amazing. The closest I can think of is a grittier and better Veruca Salt. Listen to "Chordomatic" or "Pale" to hear the hooks, but hearing "Torn" makes you think "They should've been huge!" Of course on their next album they got A&Red into sugar coated dreck, but oh well. Still Wacko Magneto is one of the best albums you've never heard, and you'll be caught off guard by how good it is. |
