A friend of mine, who was an intern at Adobe for awhile, recommended that I buy a Wacom tablet for my Photoshop. It takes a little getting used to, but once you do you wonder how you ever got along without it. In order to learn to use the Graphire tablet I went back to Photoshop in a Book and revisited some of the lessons I had previously studied. The Pen Tool was a particular nemesis of mine, so I tackled that lesson using the tablet. I struggled awhile but eventually conquered it and now I feel a whole lot more confident. The tablet is really very intuitive and I sometimes find myself absentmindedly using it for applications other than Photoshop when I don't mean to. I just pick up the pen and start clicking away, using it like a mouse. Too bad I'm such a slow learner, or I'd have been using it two years ago! And if I can use it, so can you.

This is probobly the best thing i could have bought for my photoshopping. Makes things go a lot faster. At first it took a lot of getting used to and i prefferd the mouse; after doing a complete project with the tablet I no longer use the mouse. Everything just flows. Definetely a good buy to anybody who likes photoshop and needs that extra detail and control.

For any one who uses photoshop, macromedia flash or any kind of animation program, i highly recommend this item. It has a sensitivity on it where you can adjust how hard or how soft to press. you have great control with this tablet, and i LOVE it! perfect for anyone who is new to photoshop or other animation/photo-editing programs. i give it 10 stars! i have to say though, i recommend the 6x8 or the 9x12. the 4x5 is too small. you have to remember that the size of the tablet fits to ur computer screen. hope you enjoy the product, cuz i absolutely love it! i use it as a mouse too. i dont even bother with mouses anymore!

Left handed - you will love it...,

I've bought this item, because I got tired using a mouse for touch up on images I use on my website. The tablet and pen is amazing and so easy to use. Just plug into your USB port and you are up and running. It works with all Windows applications and you do not need to install the software. Best of all it is so slim and light, you can carry it with your laptop anywhere. Overall it took me only 2 minutes to get a feel for it. I first wanted to buy the smaller tablet, but the reviews said go for the lager one. Quite honest the small one probably would have worked just fine since I don't use the entire tablet at all. Just remember the larger the tablet the further you have to move your hand from left to right of your screen. You can define the area of use on the tablet so you do not have to move the entire hand across the surface. One thing that was confusing was the combination pack of mouse and pen. I worried that I cannot use my regular mouse once installed. I'm left handed and the included mouse and pen only work on the tablet. I wanted to use the mouse with the right hand on the right side of the keyboard, and the pen/tablet with the left hand on the left side of the keyboard. It was not clear on Amazon or Wacoms website how this would work. I've called Wacom and they told me that I don't have to use the mouse that comes with it. They merely sell it bundled due to popular request. As a result I use my wireless Microsoft mouse on the right and the tablet with the pen on the left side of the keyboard. Just the way I wanted it. I found out that I can work really efficiently using the mouse and pen at the same time. I don't think a right handed person can do this, unless he/she learns to either use the mouse or the pen with the other hand. Any left handed person will love this. I don't think that this item is only for pros. Anyone that plays a lot with images for websites will love it. Touch up is now fast and easy.

Absolutely worth the money,

I've bought the Wacom Graphire4 6x8 about 2 weeks ago, and absolutely love it. I had no prior experience in using tablets, this one was my first. I bought it to use with Adobe software (mostly Illustrator and Photoshop)and since I was developing elbow pain from too much mousing.
The installation was easy, I downloaded the latest drivers from web (I highly recommend doing so, to escape the problems). I didn't read the manual, just played with configuration tool (very simple and straight forward) and was ready to go in about 5 minutes. After two days of use I gave up my original mouse and now use Wacom mouse and pen exclusively. After all my old mouse + rug took almost as much space as tablet. There is a neat way to customise the pen: I assigned the top pen button to toggle between mouse and pen modes (this way pen can act as either one),and there is no need to physically switch between mouse and pen when pen is in use in one of the applications. About third party tablets, I was looking at different options, but what made me stay away from them, is the reported compatibility issues, that might arise when new software released. On the other hand Wacom is de facto standard and there are no compatibility issues expected. This tablet is great and definitely worth the money.

This tablet is the perfect size. It's customization allows me to set the tablet, pen and mouse exactly how I need them set up. And, it allows me to switch easily between the pen and mouse quickly. I highly recommend this tablet.

I'm an amateur photographer and I purchased this product when I was working on my first photo show and I was under pressure to finish everything on time. After you try a pen tablet, you realize how clunky of a tool the mouse is when it comes to precision masking, and you can never go back.
I purchased the Graphire 6x8 thiking that the 4x6 would be a bit cramped. As it turned out, the 6x8 was actually too large for my taste (large strokes are needed for drawing and selecting, which is just not my style). The next day I found the Intous 4x6 at a local store for just a fraction more and bought it. The difference in feel is tremendous, using the Intuos is much more like using pen and paper, while the Graphire still feels plasticky by comparison. Nevertheless, the Graphire is a good tool, and if you're on a budget, go for it. If money is no object, get the Intuos. In functionality they're comparable. The Graphire comes with a slightly better software bundle, while the Intuos has a much better feel, which makes a big difference IMHO. Intuos also has more customizable functions, which I have not used so far. You should carefully consider the size issue as well(it does matter), as both a big tablet and a small tablet can prove to be inconvenient if they don't fit your drawing/work style.

What's a mouse???,
This review is from: Wacom Graphire4 6x8 USB Tablet ( CTE640S ) - Silver (Personal Computers)
This thing is the best 'toy' I've purchased in a long time! I don't even use my mouse anymore. I read the reviews here and was worried about the learning curve, but here's a tip.... use the 'clicking' sound when you first start out until you get used to moving around and 'grabbing' things.
I'm learning Illustrator, Flash, Photoshop, etc. and this tablet is the only way to work. I've had this for three days and my hand already feels better from not holding the pesky mouse. I cannot rave about it enough.

Given the choice, I wouldn't buy this tablet again. I'd buy the Graphire4 6x8 Bluetooth tablet instead.
For someone with a laptop who does things on his/her lap, the cord is a serious pain. It's somewhat of a moving part, and although you would have to try to fray this thing (the wires are protected by woven fabric and then a thick plastic insulation), I know from personal experience that the cord is easily damaged where it meets the tablet itself. Mine wore out in under a year. I strongly recommend getting the bluetooth model if you can. Other than the cord problem, it's a great tablet, especially for the price. What I didn't realize when I bought it was that the entire tablet is active area, so you get 6x8 inches to work with. The pen makes a great replacement pointer for those of us stuck with laptop trackpads and/or repetitive motion injuries, it's perfect for photo touchups, and it's great for most drawing. The pen is quite pressure sensitive, but not as much as a pencil. I promise you, unless you're really good at subtle shading, you'd never know. Those of you looking to make black and white photorealistic sketches, however, should get a more sensitive tablet.

Perfect price for a perfect size.,

This is my first tablet, and it's perfect. The 6x8 size is just right for my desk space and it doesn't clutter at all. The drivers install quickly and easily, and it's usable instantly. The mouse works well for browsing but definitely has a diffrent "feel" to it when moving the cursor around compaired to my Logitec Optical Mouse, three or four buttons would have been nice too.
The Pen is great, but I don't find myself using the buttons much even when doing art. The sensitivity is a very nice touch and setting it to a different option is simple(PhotoShop) but the default(Diameter) works very well. The only complaint is that certain games, such as FEAR, aren't compatable. The menu jitters uncontrollably, and I couldn't even get the game started. Most games don't have a problem. |
