Fresh and invigorating, bright white Vintage Dahlia dinnerware bursts with stylized flowers in either black or cherry red, boldly applied asymmetrically. While the dahlia design, inspired by traditional Asian pottery, may be called vintage, the effect here is totally modern. Part of the larger Freestyle collection from Waechtersbach, the flowery ceramic ware mixes and matches beautifully with solid pieces in the collection's intensely saturated rainbow.

This 16-piece set of Vintage Dahlia includes four place settings, each consisting of a 10-3/4-inch dinner plate, 8-1/2-inch salad plate, 5-3/4-inch-diameter soup/cereal bowl, and 9-ounce tapered cafe latte mug. Each piece shows the dahlia design, unlike the Tropical Burst set which features solid pieces except for the patterned salad plate. The rimless coupe styling of the Freestyle plates not only looks very contemporary but provides more surface area to display the elegant florals. Known for superlative glazes, especially its vivid cherry red, Germany-based Waechtersbach has been producing ceramicware since 1832. While not recommended for microwave use, the high-fired earthenware is dishwasher-safe and is still made in Germany. --Ann Bieri
