5.0 out of 5 stars No one is better than Steve Wynn over a weekend in a studio., October 12, 1999

This review is from: Waesel (Audio CD)
Steve Wynn is at his best when collaborating with others (the BRILLIANT Danny and Dusty with Long Ryders and Green of Red members is the first example of this) over a short period of time when they come together with song ideas but no songs and just bang them out over a weekend. This is one of the best examples of that style of recording. You get the guitars, drums, bass and vocals of a group of folks just having fun with some great garage rock-n-roll.

When Steve has his problems is on records like Sweetness and Light -- he tries to evoke feelings with prodcution instead of music. AVOID HIM IN THESE CASES.

But when the music and the musicians are the whole deal, like with this record, there is no garage band leader better than Steve Wynn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A nice garage band effort., November 17, 2010

This review is from: Waesel (Audio CD)
Gutterball was a super garage band of great alternative rockers from the 80's. Steve Wynn (Dream Syndicate), the late Bryan Harvey (House Of Freaks), Johnny Hott (House Of Freaks), Stephen McCarthy (Long Ryders) and Armistead Wellford (part of the Athens Ga. scene and is a great portrait artist nowdays). This their 2nd and final studio album "Waesel", they went out with a bang. "Transparency", a nice little guitar driven tune, "Your Best Friend", a punchy little number with some frenzied guitar. The hypnotic melodic "Black And Gold", "Firefly", is a great bar song. "Surgar Fix", is so catchy it should of broke this band. "Is There Something I Should Know?", has a Long Ryder feel with Steve on vocals. "Hesitation", a staunchy rocker, "Maria", the first Steve Wynn written song by himself, a great rock n' roll number , great beat. The funny "One-Eyed Dog", with some sharp electric guitar. Johnny Hott's "Tarzana, pt. 2", is a instrumental that has some nice chord changes. The Stephen McCarthy tune "Angelene", is a sweet little tune, has the south written all over it. "California", with such beautiful guitar throughout. "Everything", is as mid 90's as you can get, great vocals by Steve. "Over 40", a song about people over the age of 40. "Mickey's Big Mouth", drank plenty of these years ago in college, the song sounds like they had a few before recording this, this a very somber tune. The best Gutterball out there.
