Book Description

Men-at-Arms August 20, 2004
The Waffen-SS grew from a handful of obscure infantry battalions in 1939, to a force of more than 30 divisions by the end of World War II, including units of every type and every level of battlefield value. The mid-war divisions covered in this third title represent that range, from some of the most effective German and Western European volunteer formations – e.g. the 12. SS-Pz Div 'Hitlerjugend', and the Scandinavians and Dutchmen of the 11. 'Nordland' and 23. 'Nederland' divisions – to the Bosnian Muslims of the anti-partisan 13. 'Handschar' Division. Illustrated with rare photographs from private collections and meticulous colour artwork, the text details their organization, uniforms and insignia, and summarizes their battle records.

5.0 out of 5 stars 11th SS Division Through the 23rd, September 24, 2004
This review is from: The Waffen-SS (3): 11. to 23. Divisions (Men-at-Arms) (v. 3) (Paperback)
The Waffen-SS divisions were among the best of the german divisions during WW II. This book, the third in a series discusses the divisions numbered from 11 to 23. Each division has a narrative description of when it was formed, where the soldiers came from, specialized insignia, and a brief description of what each division did during the war up to its final point of surrender. It is beautifully illustrated with great attention to detail as to uniforms and equipment.

The 11 to 23 divisions were primarily formed of foreign troups. #11 for instance was the Nordland division composed of troops from Norway, Denmark, Netherlands. They fought on the the eastern front against Russia. They were still fighting around the Reichs Chancellery on May 1st, 1945, the day that Hitler's death was announced.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well done, as usual., September 2, 2007

Gordon Williamson did well, again. Fantastic place to start with for a specific unit divisional history studies. Sections for each unit include: names used, commanders, campaigns, insignia and for most of them - colour example of uniforms/wepons/field gear.

Its by no means an ultimate knowledge base for any division listed, but thats the excellent starting point.

My only doubt is: why are those Osprey guys not including any bibliography in it ?!?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have, October 15, 2011

The Waffen SS (4) is a great osprey title, with the awesome duo of Gorden Williams (author) and Steven Andrews (Illustritor) there is no flaw and the infomation is basic but for these units its pretty much detailed, and the illustrations are top notch.
